Notes from Hampstead The Writer's Notes 1954–1971
Free Download Notes from Hampstead: The Writer's Notes: 1954-1971 by Elias Canetti, John Hargraves
English | 2005 | ISBN: 0374530599 | 228 Pages | EPUB | 433.8 KB
Notes from Hampstead is a map to the late Nobel laureate's thinking, a triumphant compendium of aphoristic, enigmatic, and expository writings covering a characteristically diverse range of subjects: the significance of mythology and ethnicity, the nature of creativity, the extraordinary hold violence has on the twentieth century, literary history (one learns of Canetti's affection for Cervantes, Stendhal, and Gogol, and his adoration of Kafka), and, always, there is a fierce quarrel with death.

The Lord of the Rings 1954–2004 Scholarship in Honor of Richard E. Blackwelder
Free Download The Lord of the Rings 1954-2004: Scholarship in Honor of Richard E. Blackwelder By Hammond, Wayne G(Editor)
2006 | 387 Pages | ISBN: 087462018X | PDF | 2 MB
The fiftieth anniversary of the first publication of The Lord of the Rings, the enormously popular and influential masterpiece of fantasy by J.R.R. Tolkien, is celebrated in these twenty papers presented at the Marquette University Tolkien conference of 21-23 October 2004. They are published in honor of the late Dr. Richard E. Blackwelder, who gave his important Tolkien collection to the Marquette University Libraries, long a major center for Tolkien research. Half of the papers in this book focus on The Lord of the Rings, while others investigate the larger body of Tolkien's achievements, as a writer of fiction, a maker of language, and one of the leading philologists of his day. The contributors to The Lord of the Rings, 1954-2004 include a who's who of scholars in Tolkien studies: Douglas A. Anderson, David Bratman, Marjorie Burns, Jane Chance, Michael D.C. Drout, Matthew A. Fisher, Verlyn Flieger, Mike Foster, John Garth, Wayne G. Hammond, Carl F. Hostetter, Sumner G. Hunnewell, John D. Rateliff, Christina Scull, T.A. Shippey, Arden R. Smith, Paul Edmund Thomas, Richard C. West, and Arne Zettersten. As preface, Charles B. Elston, former director of Special Collections and University Archives, provides a reminiscence of Dr. Blackwelder and his generosity to Marquette. Fans and students of Tolkien alike will find these essays informative and entertaining.

2013 | 204 Pages | ISBN: 0786476559 | EPUB | 4 MB
The book is the day by day story of the 1954 Indians, whose .721 winning percentage is still the highest in American League history. It tells how down the city of Cleveland was on the team following three straight second place finishes, how little was expected of it by its fans, and even some of its players, and how it exceeded all expectations by winning a league-record 111 games and a pennant, before flopping in the World Series.

How 1954 Changed History [Audiobook]
Michael Flamm (Author, Narrator), The Great Courses, "How 1954 Changed History"
English | ASIN: B083L436GN | 2020 | M4B@128 kbps | ~05:05:00 | 285 MB
Every year has its share of notable events, but some years seem to capture the essence of a decade in a handful of months. The year 1954 is one such year. It began in January with a celebrity marriage heard round the world and then progressed through a series of major political, social, and cultural milestones that would echo through the next several decades.
The years following World War II were a time of increased wealth and confidence, years that saw the rise of a solid, increasingly powerful middle class in America. With rising wages, major developments in consumer goods and entertainment, increasing opportunities for housing and education, amazing medical breakthroughs, the spread of interstate highways - it was a decade of optimism for many after the horrors of depression and war. But the 1950s were also years of increasing Cold War paranoia and unrest among the disenfranchised Americans that were not experiencing the same freedom and prosperity as their fellow citizens.

Neorealist Film Culture, 1945-1954 Rome, Open Cinema
Francesco Pitassio, "Neorealist Film Culture, 1945-1954: Rome, Open Cinema"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 9089648003 | 384 pages | PDF | 4.5 MB
Unique, truthful, brutal... Neorealism is often associated with adjectives stressing its peculiarities in representing the real, its lack of antecedents, and its legacy in terms of film style. While this is useful when confronting auteurs such as De Sica, Rossellini or Visconti, it becomes problematic when examining a widespread cultural practice that realistic modes deeply affected. This cultural production included filmmaking, literature, visual culture and photography, as well as media discourses. It was internally contradictory but fruitful inasmuch as its legacy influenced national culture for many decades to come. The volume spotlights post-war Italian film culture by locating a series of crossroads, i.e. topics barely examined when discussing neorealism: nation, memory and trauma, visual culture, stardom, and performance. The aim is to deconstruct neorealism as a monument and to open up its cultural history.
