Breaking the Binaries in Security Studies A Gendered Analysis of Women in Combat (PDF)
Free Download Ayelet Harel-Shalev, "Breaking the Binaries in Security Studies: A Gendered Analysis of Women in Combat "
English | ISBN: 019007258X | 2020 | 168 pages | PDF | 1385 KB
Several months after a 2014 operation in the Gaza Strip, fifty-three Israeli Defense Forces combatants and combat-support soldiers were awarded military decorations for exhibiting extraordinary bravery. From a gendered perspective, the most noteworthy aspect of these awards was not the fact that only 4 of the 53 recipients were women, but rather the fact that the men were uniformly praised for being "brave," being "heroes," "actively performing acts of bravery," "protecting," and "preventing terror attacks," while the women were repeatedly commended for "not panicking." This pattern is not unique to the Israeli case, but rather reflects the patriarchal norms that still prevail in military institutions worldwide. One might expect that, now that women serve on the battlefield as combatants, some of the gendered norms informing militaries would have long disappeared. As it stands, women in the military still face a double battle-against the patriarchal institution, as well as against the military's purported enemies.

Accreting Binaries Nature, formation and evolution (Programme AAS–IOP Astronomy)
Free Download Accreting Binaries: Nature, formation and evolution (Programme: AAS-IOP Astronomy) by Sylvain Chaty
English | November 30, 2022 | ISBN: 0750338857 | 150 pages | EPUB | 13 Mb
This book describes the nature, formation and evolution of accreting binaries, showing how extensive observations, accompanied by heavy simulations, allow astronomers to better understand the energetic phenomena occurring in these intriguing systems. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this book provides an introduction to the topic, first describing the astrophysical basics of both single and binary stars, before moving on to detail the different types of accreting binary systems.

ExtractionExclusion Beyond Binaries of Exclusion and Inclusion in Natural Resource Extraction
Free Download Stephanie Postar, "Extraction/Exclusion: Beyond Binaries of Exclusion and Inclusion in Natural Resource Extraction "
English | ISBN: 1786615363 | 2023 | 358 pages | EPUB, PDF | 5 MB + 4 MB
Extraction/Exclusion draws and builds on scholarship from across the social sciences to show that natural resource extraction is predicated on exclusions. This innovative workportrays how inclusionary language and practices paradoxically often result in further exclusions, concealing unchanged systems of domination and dispossession and reproducing violent exploitative processes on the ground.

Accreting Binaries Nature, formation and evolution
English | 2022 | ISBN: 978-0750338851 | 241 pages | True PDF EPUB | 56.41 MB
This book describes the rich and diverse realm of accreting binary systems, made up of a compact object such as a white dwarf, neutron star or black hole, orbiting a companion star. It details the nature, formation and evolution of accreting binaries, describing how extensive observations, accompanied by simulations, allow astronomers to better understand the energetic phenomena occurring in these intriguing systems. The book also describes how multimessenger astronomy is currently revolutionizing our view of these systems, adding gravitational waves, neutrinos and cosmic rays to the photon light we receive from them.
Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this book provides an introduction to the topic, first describing the astrophysical basics of both single and binary stars, before moving on to detail the different types of accreting binary systems such as cataclysmic variables (CVs), low-and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs/HMXBs), and peculiar binaries such as intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), finishing up with a panorama of multi-messenger research.

Beyond Binaries Sex, Sexualities and Gender in the Lusophone World
Paulo Pepe, "Beyond Binaries: Sex, Sexualities and Gender in the Lusophone World "
English | ISBN: 1787076156 | 2019 | 314 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This volume sets out to investigate queer literature and cinema, exploring in particular the intersection of issues of gender and Lusophone culture. The essays collected here present individual case studies within a queer theoretical framework, examining the ways in which queer identities are constructed and addressed through different types of cultural production. More specifically, they consider Portuguese and Lusophone socio-cultural contexts and the representation of gender in popular culture, as well as the centrality of literature and cinema in the subversion of heteronormative social norms.
