The English Civil War An Alternative History of Britain [Audiobook]
Free Download Timothy Venning, Liam Gerrard (Narrator), "The English Civil War: An Alternative History of Britain"
English | ASIN: B0CXRLBK1P | 2024 | MP3@64 kbps | ~11:38:00 | 320 MB
With hindsight, the victory of Parliamentarian forces over the Royalists in the English Civil War may seem inevitable, but this outcome was not a foregone conclusion. Timothy Venning explores many of the turning points and discusses how they might so easily have played out differently.
What if, for example, Charles I had capitalized on his victory at Edgehill by attacking London without delay? Could this have ended the war in 1642? His actual advance on the capital in 1643 failed but came close to causing a Parliamentarian collapse-how could it have succeeded, and what then? Among the many other scenarios, full consideration is given to the role of Ireland (what if Papal meddling had not prevented Irish Catholics aiding Charles?) and Scotland (how might Montrose's Scottish loyalists have neutralized the Covenanters?). The author analyzes the plausible possibilities in each thread, throwing light on the role of chance and underlying factors in the real outcome, as well as what might easily have been different.

An Unholy Traffic Slave Trading in the Civil War South [Audiobook]
Free Download An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civil War South (Audiobook)
English | ISBN: 9781696615723 | 2024 | 11 hours and 30 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 326 MB
Author: Robert K. D. Colby
Narrator: James R Cheatham

The Confederate States of America was born in defense of slavery. Between Fort Sumter to Appomattox, Confederates bought and sold thousands African American men, women, and children. These transactions in humanity made the internal slave trade a cornerstone of Confederate society, a bulwark of the Rebel economy, and a central part of the experience of the Civil War for all inhabiting the American South. As An Unholy Traffic shows, slave trading helped Southerners survive and fight the Civil War, as well as to build the future for which they fought.

The Scars We Carve Bodies and Wounds in Civil War Print Culture
Free Download Allison M. Johnson, "The Scars We Carve: Bodies and Wounds in Civil War Print Culture"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0807170372 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 8.3 mb
In The Scars We Carve: Bodies and Wounds in Civil War Print Culture, Allison M. Johnson considers the ubiquitous images of bodies―white and black, male and female, soldier and civilian―that appear throughout newspapers, lithographs, poems, and other texts circulated during and in the decades immediately following the Civil War. Rather than dwelling on the work of well-known authors, The Scars We Carve uncovers a powerful archive of Civil War-era print culture in which the individual body and its component parts, marked by violence or imbued with rhetorical power, testify to the horrors of war and the lasting impact of the internecine conflict.

The Civil Condition in World Politics Beyond Tragedy and Utopianism
Free Download Vassilios Paipais, "The Civil Condition in World Politics: Beyond Tragedy and Utopianism "
English | ISBN: 1529224179 | 2022 | 264 pages | PDF | 18 MB
Bringing together an international team of contributors, this volume draws on international political theory and intellectual history to rethink the problem of a pluralistic world order. Inspired by the work of international political theorist Nicholas Rengger, the book focuses on three main areas of Rengger's contribution to the political theory of international relations: his Augustine-inspired idea of an 'Anti-Pelagian Imagination'; his Oakeshottian argument for a pluralist 'conversation of mankind'; and his ruminations on war as the uncivil condition in world politics. Through a critical engagement with his work, the book illuminates the promises and limitations of civility as a sceptical, non-utopian, anti-perfectionist approach to theorizing world order that transcends both realist pessimism and liberal utopianism.

The Bill of the Century The Epic Battle for the Civil Rights Act
Free Download Clay Risen, "The Bill of the Century: The Epic Battle for the Civil Rights Act"
English | 2015 | pages: 320 | ISBN: 160819826X, 1608198243 | EPUB | 1,0 mb
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the single most important piece of legislation passed by Congress in American history. This one law so dramatically altered American society that, looking back, it seems preordained-as Everett Dirksen, the GOP leader in the Senate and a key supporter of the bill, said, "No force is more powerful than an idea whose time has come." But there was nothing predestined about the victory: a phalanx of powerful senators, pledging to "fight to the death" for segregation, launched the longest filibuster in American history to defeat it.

The A to Z of the Civil War and Reconstruction
Free Download William L. Richter, "The A to Z of the Civil War and Reconstruction"
English | 2009 | pages: 971 | ISBN: 0810868202 | PDF | 3,7 mb
The importance of the Civil War and Reconstruction in the history of the United States cannot be overstated. There was a very real possibility that the union could have been sundered, resulting in a very different American history, and probably world history. But the union was held together by tough and determined leaders and by the economic muscle of the North. Following the end of the war, the period of American history known as Reconstruction followed. This was a period construed in many different ways. While the states were once again "united," many of the postwar efforts divided different segments of the population and failed to achieve their goals in an era too often remembered for carpetbaggers and scalawags, and Congressional imbroglios and incompetent government.

It is an original and important addition to the debate about globalization's role in transnational public administration and governance.
