Disease and the Modern World 1500 to the Present Day
Free Download Disease and the Modern World: 1500 to the Present Day By Mark Harrison
2004 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0745628095 | EPUB | 1 MB
'Mark Harrison's book illuminates the threats posed by infectious diseases since 1500. He places these diseases within an international perspective, and demonstrates the relationship between European expansion and changing epidemiological patterns. The book is a significant introduction to a fascinating subject. ' Gerald N. Grob, Rutgers State University In this lively and accessible book, Mark Harrison charts the history of disease from the birth of the modern world around 1500 through to the present day. He explores how the rise of modern nation-states was closely linked to the threat posed by disease, and particularly infectious, epidemic diseases. He examines the ways in which disease and its treatment and prevention, changed over the centuries, under the impact of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, and with the advent of scientific medicine. For the first time, the author integrates the history of disease in the West with a broader analysis of the rise of the modern world, as it was transformed by commerce, slavery, and colonial rule. Disease played a vital role in this process, easing European domination in some areas, limiting it in others. Harrison goes on to show how a new environment was produced in which poverty and education rather than geography became the main factors in the distribution of disease. Assuming no prior knowledge of the history of disease, Disease and the Modern World provides an invaluable introduction to one of the richest and most important areas of history. It will be essential reading for all undergraduates and postgraduates taking courses in the history of disease and medicine, and for anyone interested in how disease has shaped, and has been shaped by, the modern world.

English | 2009 | pages: 338 | ISBN: 0387876863, 144198142X | PDF | 5,1 mb
Adolescence is typically fraught with problems, even under optimal conditions. And when chronic illness is added to the picture, medical and related social issues can complicate, and even disrupt, the course of development. The first text geared toward the integrated care setting, Behavioral Approaches to Chronic Disease in Adolescence offers clinicians an evidence-based guide to helping their young clients manage their chronic conditions and treating the psychosocial effects―from school problems and stigma to noncompliance and depression―that frequently follow diagnosis. Expert contributors present up-to-date information on epidemiology, symptoms, comorbid psychosocial problems, and treatment options for a variety of common illnesses, arranged to foster effective interventions for adolescents and efficient collaboration with other care providers in the team. Coverage is comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible, ensuring best practice while respecting each client's individuality: Empirically-based treatment guidelines for illnesses commonly found in youth, including Type 1 and 2 diabetes, asthma, cancer, obesity, and chronic pain. Overview of the physiology of adolescence, particularly as it may be affected by medical conditions, and of adolescent brain development. Latest findings on the role of families in teens' adjustment to illness and treatment. Cultural considerations affecting ethnically diverse clients and their families. Detailed discussions of ethical issues relevant to treating chronically ill young people, and of controversies involving pharmacotherapy with this population. Chapters contain useful handouts for clinicians and clients. Taking Care of the Practitioner" chapter with helpful strategies for avoiding burnout. Its emphasis on specific practical information makes Behavioral Approaches to Chronic Disease in Adolescence a "go-to" reference for health psychologists, child and adolescent mental health practitioners, pediatricians and family practitioners, and clinical social workers.

Alzheimer's Disease Recent Findings in Pathophysiology, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Modalities
Free Download Alzheimer's Disease: Recent Findings in Pathophysiology, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Modalities by Thimmaiah Govindaraju
English | January 12, 2022 | ISBN: 1839162309 | 694 pages | MOBI | 8.08 Mb
Alzheimer's disease is an increasingly common form of dementia and despite rising interest in discovery of novel treatments and investigation into aetiology, there are no currently approved treatments that directly tackle the causes of the condition. Due to its multifactorial pathogenesis, current treatments are directed against symptoms and even precise diagnosis remains difficult as the majority of cases are diagnosed symptomatically and usually confirmed only by autopsy. Alzheimer's Disease: Recent Findings in Pathophysiology, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Modalities provides a comprehensive overview from aetiology and neurochemistry to diagnosis, evaluation and management of Alzheimer's disease, and latest therapeutic approaches. Intended to provide an introduction to all aspects of the disease and latest developments, this book is ideal for students, postgraduates and researchers in neurochemistry, neurological drug discovery and Alzheimer's disease.

Stress and Cardiovascular Disease (Repost)
Free Download Paul Hjemdahl, Annika Rosengren, Andrew Steptoe, "Stress and Cardiovascular Disease"
English | 2011 | pages: 389 | ISBN: 1848824181, 1447162110 | PDF | 12,8 mb
The main aim of this book is to evaluate the concept of stress and provide tools for physicians to identify patients who might benefit from stress management. This will incorporate a detailed description of the physiological and pathophysiological consequences of acute and chronic stress that might lead to cardiovascular disease. The book will aim to critically evaluate interventional research (behavioural and other therapies) and provide evidence based recommendations on how to manage stress in the cardiovascular patient. Our intentions are to define and highlight stress as an etiological factor for cardiovascular disease, and to describe an evidence based "tool box" that physicians may use to identify and manage patients in whom stress may be an important contributing factor for their disease and their risk of suffering cardiovascular complications.

Renin Angiotensin System and Cardiovascular Disease (Repost)

English | 2009 | pages: 249 | ISBN: 1607611856, 1617796387 | PDF | 4,6 mb
Experimental and clinical evidence supports the view that the activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system is involved in cardiovascular pathology including hypertension, heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and atherosclerosis. The present volume describes the intricacies involved in these processes, including the in?uence of prorenin/renin, angiotensin II, angiotensin (1-7), and aldosterone on cardiac and vascular functions as well as their involvement in the generation of cardiovascular diseases. Fundamental aspects like intracellular signaling, regulation of cell volume in the failing heart, and the presence of an intracrine renin angiotensin system are discussed. Moreover, the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor as an important c- ponent of the intracrine renin angiotensin system and as a regulator of extracellular action of angiotensin II is described, reinforcing the view that aldosterone inhibitors are helpful in the treatment of heart failure and hypertension. Let us hope the imp- tant topics included here motivate basic and clinical investigators and contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular diseases. We want to thank the distinguished authors and Humana Press for the opportunity to publish this important book. Walmor C. English | 2010 | pages: 125 | ISBN: 1848821174, 0857292382 | PDF | 2,5 mb
Clem Imrie and Colin Johnson This book stems from an unusual meeting held in The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in March 2007. Enthusiastic doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases were arranged in small groups to discuss specific unsolved/partially clinical problems and suggest the way forward. In some instances, the recommendations were initial improved longitudinal studies, while in others better double-blind randomized st- ies. The recommendations were then presented on the second day before the total 40 plus participants who added their input. Finally, the mechanics of initiating the proposals were arranged. The editors are most thankful to the authors from the meeting, who have ass- bled the various contributions to this stimulating volume. xi Part I Potential Trials in Acute Pancreatitis Chapter 1 Acute Pancreatitis in Intensive Care John Kinsella, Barry Clements, Euan Dickson, Thierry Dugernier, and Martin Hughes 1.1 Intr oduction Severe acute pancreatitis is associated with the development of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Hypoxemia is a hallmark of acute pancreatitis and respiratory failure is the most common single organ failure in this disease. In the most severely ill patients mul- organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and multi-organ failure (MOF) occur. Intensive care with multiple organ support is necessary.
