Writing Europe in Renaissance France Travels in Reality and Imagination
Free Download Niall Oddy, "Writing Europe in Renaissance France: Travels in Reality and Imagination "
English | ISBN: 1399522612 | 2024 | 176 pages | PDF | 9 MB
In this original study, Niall Oddy explores representations of Europe in sixteenth and early-seventeenth century French writing to argue that Europe as an idea evolved in productive dialogue with emerging national consciousness, not as an alternative to the nation state. Analysing literary texts alongside works of travel, geography, history and politics, this book demonstrates how ideas of Europe were shaped by real and imagined journeys across the globe and adapted across a range of discursive contexts for varied purposes. Using the notion of 'imagined geography' to present a conceptual map of what Europe looked like from different points across the globe, each chapter examines representations of the continent through the lens of one location (Brazil, Constantinople, Malta, Geneva). In a period of great intellectual transformation, as new interactions with cultures overseas reshaped how the wider world was understood, this focus on nationhood uncovers how, as the idea of 'Europe' developed, it emerged as a contested notion and an issue of debate.

Normandy '44 D–Day and the Battle for France
Free Download Normandy '44: D-Day and the Battle for France By James Holland
2019 | 720 Pages | ISBN: 1787631273 | EPUB | 17 MB
'A superb account of the invasion that deserves immense praise. To convey the human drama of Normandy requires great knowledge and sensitivity. Holland has both in spades' - THE TIMES'A devastating new account..Holland knows his stuff when it comes to military matters. The reader is in safe hands navigating each aspect of this complex campaign' - DAILY MAIL Book of the WeekRenowned World War Two historian James Holland presents an entirely new perspective on one of the most important moments in recent history, unflinchingly examining the brutality and violence that characterised the campaign.D-Day and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed have come to be seen as a defining episode in the Second World War. Its story has been endlessly retold, and yet it remains a narrative burdened by both myth and assumed knowledge. In this reexamined history, James Holland presents a broader overview, one that challenges much of what we think we know about D-Day and the Normandy campaign. The sheer size and scale of the Allies' war machine ultimately dominates the strategic, operational and tactical limitations of the German forces. This was a brutal campaign. In terms of daily casualties, the numbers were worse than for any one battle during the First World War.

France's Memorial Landscape Views from Camp des Milles
Free Download Sophie Fuggle, "France's Memorial Landscape: Views from Camp des Milles "
English | ISBN: 1837644780 | 2023 | 224 pages | PDF | 8 MB
During August 1942 several women jumped to their deaths from a second story window at the tile factory in the small town of Milles near Aix-en-Provence. Between 1939 and 1942 the factory assumed various roles as internment camp, transit camp and ultimately deportation camp. This book is about the view from the 'suicide window' as it is presented within the Camp des Milles memorial museum which opened in 2012. It explores how this view might help us to understand and imagine the world of internment and deportation camps operating in France during the Second World War and their memorial today. The book uses the views framed by the window to think critically about the museography of the memorial within the wider context of France's relatively late acknowledgment of its role in the persecution of the Jews during the Second World War.

Drugging France Mind–Altering Medicine in the Long Nineteenth Century
Free Download Drugging France: Mind-Altering Medicine in the Long Nineteenth Century (Intoxicating Histories) by Sara E. Black
English | September 15, 2022 | ISBN: 0228011434, 0228011647 | True EPUB/PDF | 400 pages | 7.2/45.5 MB
In the nineteenth century, drug consumption permeated French society to produce a new norm: the chemical enhancement of modern life. French citizens empowered themselves by seeking pharmaceutical relief for their suffering and engaging in self-medication. Doctors and pharmacists, meanwhile, fashioned themselves as gatekeepers to these potent drugs, claiming that their expertise could shield the public from accidental harm. Despite these efforts, the unanticipated phenomenon of addiction laid bare both the embodied nature of the modern self and the inherent instability of the notions of individual free will and responsibility.
