Up from Invisibility Lesbians, Gay Men, and the Media in America
Free Download Larry Gross, "Up from Invisibility: Lesbians, Gay Men, and the Media in America"
English | 2002 | pages: 320 | ISBN: 0231119526, 0231119534 | EPUB | 1,6 mb
A half century ago gay men and lesbians were all but invisible in the media and, in turn, popular culture. With the lesbian and gay liberation movement came a profoundly new sense of homosexual community and empowerment and the emergence of gay people onto the media's stage. And yet even as the mass media have been shifting the terms of our public conversation toward a greater acknowledgment of diversity, does the emerging "visibility" of gay men and women do justice to the complexity and variety of their experience? Or is gay identity manipulated and contrived by media that are unwilling―and perhaps unable―to fully comprehend and honor it?

Out in the Field Reflections of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists
Free Download Out in the Field: Reflections of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists By Ellen Lewin, William L Leap (eds.)
1996 | 317 Pages | ISBN: 0252065182 | PDF | 13 MB
"Definitive and well-rounded. . . . Explores how anthropologists manage issues of identity and sexuality in field research and professional life. In an era when the field worker's positionality is critical to research and ethnographic writing, this insightful book has much to say to gay and straight researchers alike." -- Louise Lamphere, University of New Mexico"Addresses sensitive, controversial, and tabooed subjects. . . . Out in the Field will be read by a variety of audiences, within and outside of anthropology." -- Jean Jackson, Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyLesbian and gay anthropologists write candidly in Out in the Field about their research and personal experiences in conducting fieldwork, about the ethical and intellectual dilemmas they face in writing about lesbian or gay populations, and about the impact on their careers of doing lesbian/gay research. The first volume in which lesbian and gay anthropologists discuss personal experiences, Out in the Field offers compelling illustrations of professional lives both closeted and out to colleagues and fieldwork informants. It also concerns aligning career goals with personal sexual preferences and speaks directly to issues of representation and authority currently being explored throughout the social sciences.CONTRIBUTORS: Geoffrey Burkhart, Liz Goodman, Delores M. Walters, Walter L. Williams, Sabine Lang, Ellen Lewin, William L. Leap, Ralph Bolton, Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy, Madeline Davis, Will Roscoe, Esther Newton, Stephen O. Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship
Free Download Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship By Aaron Goodfellow
2015 | 190 Pages | ISBN: 0823266044 | PDF | 1 MB
While the topic of gay marriage and families continues to be popular in the media, few scholarly works focus on gay men with children. Based on ten years of fieldwork among gay families living in the rural, suburban, and urban area of the eastern United States, Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship presents a beautifully written and meticulously argued ethnography of gay men and the families they have formed. In a culture that places a premium on biology as the founding event of paternity, Aaron Goodfellow poses the question: Can the signing of legal contracts and the public performances of care replace biological birth as the singular event marking the creation of fathers? Beginning with a comprehensive review of the relevant literature in this field, four chapters―each presenting a particular picture of paternity―explore a range of issues, such as interracial adoption, surrogacy, the importance of physical resemblance in familial relationships, single parenthood, delinquency, and the ways in which the state may come to define the norms of health. The author deftly illustrates how fatherhood for gay men draws on established biological, theological, and legal images of the family often thought oppressive to the emergence of queer forms of social life.Chosen with care and described with great sensitivity, each carefully researched case examines gay fatherhood through life narratives. Painstakingly theorized, Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship contends that gay families are one of the most important areas to which social scientists might turn in order to understand how law, popular culture, and biology are simultaneously made manifest and interrogated in everyday life. By focusing specifically on gay fathers, Goodfellow produces an anthropological account of how paternity, sexuality, and masculinity are leveraged in relations of care between gay fathers and their children.

A Pill for Promiscuity Gay Sex in an Age of Pharmaceuticals
Free Download Andrew R. Spieldenner, "A Pill for Promiscuity: Gay Sex in an Age of Pharmaceuticals "
English | ISBN: 1978824556 | 2023 | 154 pages | PDF | 6 MB
For a generation of gay men who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming sexually active meant confronting the dangers of catching and transmitting HIV. In the 21st century, however, the development of viral suppression treatments and preventative pills such as PrEP and nPEP has massively reduced the risk of acquiring HIV. Yet some of the stigma around gay male promiscuity and bareback sex has remained, inhibiting open dialogues about sexual desire, risk, and pleasure.
