Journalism in the Grey Zone Pluralism and Media Capture in Lebanon and Tunisia
Free Download Kjetil Selvik, "Journalism in the Grey Zone: Pluralism and Media Capture in Lebanon and Tunisia"
English | ISBN: 1399515810 | 2023 | 208 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Lebanon and Tunisia are two of the freest countries in the Middle East and North Africa, but elites in both countries seek to manipulate media organisations and individual journalists to shore up support for themselves and attack opponents. This book explores the political role of journalism in these hybrid settings where democratic and authoritarian practices co-exist- a growing trend all over the world. Through interviews with journalists in different positions and analyses of key events in recent years, Journalism in the Grey Zone explains the tensions that media instrumentalisation creates in the news media and how journalists navigate conflicting pressures from powerholders and a marginalised populace. Despite 'capture' of the media by political and economic actors, journalism remains a powerful and occasionally disruptive force.

Grey on Grey At the Threshold of Philosophy and Art
Free Download Kamini Vellodi, "Grey on Grey: At the Threshold of Philosophy and Art "
English | ISBN: 1474478514 | 2023 | 480 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Taking off from Hegel's invocation of philosophy as a painting of 'grey on grey', this collection of essays explores the rich scope of possibilities implicated by the colour and concept of grey. Crossing art history, visual studies, philosophy, anthropology and literary studies, contributions attest to the repetitious insistence of grey on grey in rethinking the ontology of artworks and images; concepts of time, technique and medium; and how its immanent logic of self-differing summons forth deadlocks and blind spots, both past and present.

Free Download Todd McCarthy, Ryan Horn (Narrator), "Howard Hawks: The Grey Fox of Hollywood"
English | ASIN: B0CSWXZ274 | 2024 | M4B@64 kbps | ~30:54:00 | 855 MB
The first major biography of one of Old Hollywood's greatest directors. Sometime partner of the eccentric Howard Hughes, drinking buddy of William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, an inveterate gambler and a notorious liar, Howard Hawks was the most modern of the great masters and one of the first directors to declare his independence from the major studios. He played Svengali to Lauren Bacall, Montgomery Clift, and others, but Hawks's greatest creation may have been himself. As The Atlantic Monthly noted, "Todd McCarthy. . . . has gone further than anyone else in sorting out the truths and lies of the life, the skills and the insight and the self-deceptions of the work."

Rapid formation and development of new theories of systems science have become an important part of modern science and technology. For - ample, since the 1940s, there have appeared systems theory, information theory, fuzzy mathematics, cybernetics, dissipative structures, synergetics, catastrophe theory, chaos theory, bifurcations, ultra circulations, dynamics, and many other systems theories. Grey systems theory is also one of such systems theories that appeared initially in the 1980s. When the research of systems science and the method and technology of systems engineering are applied in various traditional disciplines, such as management science, decision science, and various scienti?c disciplines, a whole new group of new results and breakthroughs are obtained. Such a historical background has provided the environment and soil for grey systems theory to form and to develop rapidly in the past 20-plus years. More speci?cally, in 1982, Professor Deng Ju-Long published the ?rst research paper in the area of grey systems in the international journal entitled Systems and Control Letters, published by North-Holland Co. His paper was titled "Control Problems of Grey Systems. " The publication of this paper signalled the birth of grey systems theory after many years of e ective research of the founding father. This new theory soon caught the attention of the international academic community and practitioners of science. Many well-known scholars, such as Chinese academicians Qian Xueshen, Song Jian, and Zhang Zhongjun. Professor Roger W.

There have been few books about Grey's glorious (but ultimately ill-fated) West Indies campaign in the early years of the long and terrible wars of 1793-1815, yet five of the subalterns in Grey's expeditionary force went on to command divisions in Wellington's Peninsula army; another two commanded the Iron Duke's Royal Artillery; and one (Richard Fletcher) - famously - the Royal Engineers.

The Grey Undercurrent Whalers and Littoral Societies at the Deep Beaches of Africa
Free Download Felix Schürmann, "The Grey Undercurrent: Whalers and Littoral Societies at the Deep Beaches of Africa "
English | ISBN: 3110759675 | 2023 | 380 pages | EPUB, PDF | 11 MB + 236 MB
By extending their voyages to all oceans from the 1760s onward, whaling vessels from North America and Europe spanned a novel net of hunting grounds, maritime routes, supply posts, and transport chains across the globe. For obtaining provisions, cutting firewood, recruiting additional men, and transshipping whale products, these highly mobile hunters regularly frequented coastal places and islands along their routes, which were largely determined by the migratory movements of their prey. American-style pelagic whaling thus constituted a significant, though often overlooked factor in connecting people and places between distant world regions during the long nineteenth century. Focusing on Africa, this book investigates side-effects resulting from stopovers by whalers for littoral societies on the economic, social, political, and cultural level. For this purpose it draws on eight local case studies, four from Africa's west coast and four from its east coast. In the overall picture, the book shows a broad range of effects and side-effects of different forms and strengths, which it figures as a "grey undercurrent" of global history.
