Achieving Anew How New Immigrants Do in American Schools, Jobs, and Neighborhoods
Free Download Achieving Anew: How New Immigrants Do in American Schools, Jobs, and Neighborhoods By Michael J. White; Jennifer E. Glick
2011 | 236 Pages | ISBN: 0871549263 | PDF | 10 MB
Can the recent influx of immigrants successfully enter the mainstream of American life, or will many of them fail to thrive and become part of a permanent underclass?Achieving Anewexamines immigrant life in school, at work, and in communities and demonstrates that recent immigrants and their children do make substantial progress over time, both within and between generations. From policymakers to private citizens, our national conversation on immigration has consistently questioned the country's ability to absorb increasing numbers of foreign nationals-now nearly one million legal entrants per year. Using census data, longitudinal education surveys, and other data, Michael White and Jennifer Glick place their study of new immigrant achievement within a context of recent developments in assimilation theory and policies regulating who gets in and what happens to them upon arrival. They find that immigrant status itself is not an important predictor of educational achievement. First-generation immigrants arrive in the United States with less education than native-born Americans, but by the second and third generation, the children of immigrants are just as successful in school as native-born students with equivalent social and economic background. As with prior studies, the effects of socioeconomic background and family structure show through strongly. On education attainment, race and ethnicity have a strong impact on achievement initially, but less over time.Looking at the labor force, White and Glick find no evidence to confirm the often-voiced worry that recent immigrants and their children are falling behind earlier arrivals. On the contrary, immigrants of more recent vintage tend to catch up to the occupational status of natives more quickly than in the past. Family background, educational preparation, and race/ethnicity all play a role in labor market success, just as they do for the native born, but the offspring of immigrants suffer no disadvantage due to their immigrant origins.New immigrants continue to live in segregated neighborhoods, though with less prevalence than native black-white segregation. Immigrants who arrived in the 1960s are now much less segregated than recent arrivals. Indeed, the authors find that residential segregation declines both within and across generations. Yet black and Mexican immigrants are more segregated from whites than other groups, showing that race and economic status still remain powerful influences on where immigrants live.Although the picture is mixed and the continuing significance of racial factors remains a concern,Achieving Anewprovides compelling reassurance that the recent wave of immigrants is making impressive progress in joining the American mainstream. The process of assimilation is not broken, the advent of a new underclass is not imminent, and the efforts to argue for the restriction of immigration based on these fears are largely mistaken.

Undocumented Immigrants in an Era of Arbitrary Law The Flight and the Plight of People Deemed 'Illegal'
Free Download Robert Barsky, "Undocumented Immigrants in an Era of Arbitrary Law: The Flight and the Plight of People Deemed 'Illegal'"
English | ISBN: 1138634999 | 2016 | 220 pages | EPUB, PDF | 2 MB + 10 MB
This book describes the experiences of undocumented migrants, all around the world, bringing to life the challenges they face from the moment they consider leaving their country of origin, until the time they are deported back to it. Drawing on a broad array of academic studies, including law, interpretation and translation studies, border studies, human rights, communication, critical discourse analysis and sociology, Robert Barsky argues that the arrays of actions that are taken against undocumented migrants are often arbitrary, and exercised by an array of officials who can and do exercise considerable discretion, both positive and negative.

The Daughters of Immigrants A Multidisciplinary Study
Free Download Asha Jeffers, "The Daughters of Immigrants: A Multidisciplinary Study"
English | ISBN: 1666941875 | 2023 | 144 pages | EPUB, PDF | 231 KB + 1066 KB
This collection brings together established and emerging scholars from the humanities and the social sciences whose work considers the daughters of immigrants. By showcasing these varied perspectives, the collection draws meaningful connections across national and ethnic lines while attending to the particularities of specific histories, locations, and migration journeys. The multidisciplinary nature of this project highlights the relevance and usefulness of varied methodological and theoretical approaches for understanding the diverse lived experiences of the daughters of immigrants, as well as how those experiences are theorized and represented. While each chapter contains its own argument, assumes its own conceptual and disciplinary viewpoint, and tends to specific national and ethnic origins and sites of immigration, each offers meaningful insight into the gendered positionality of the daughters of immigrants as mediated by the complexities of migration, kinship, and culture. Taken together, these contributions point to the nuanced ways national, ethnic, and gendered identity function, and how those not always well served by how these identities are constituted understand and navigate forces beyond their control.

Intra–State Immigrants as Sub–State Nationalists
Free Download Nick Hutcheon, "Intra-State Immigrants as Sub-State Nationalists "
English | ISBN: 0367777126 | 2021 | 140 pages | EPUB | 644 KB
This book explores the attitudes, opinions and life experiences of first and second generation intra-state immigrants who are convinced and committed Basque nationalists. Based on in-depth interviews with activists, it challenges many of the assumptions often made about Basque nationalism as an exemplary case of ethnic nationalism in the exclusive sense. Focusing on activists' migration history, their experiences of social and political inclusion and exclusion, their national and regional identities, their political identities and their experiences of political activism, the author explores the role of origins, identity and life experience in activists' willingness to engage with Basque nationalism. As such,

The Transnational Political Participation of Immigrants A Transatlantic Perspective

With the progress in communication and transport technologies, it has never been easier for migrants to stay connected with their country of origin. Facing the wide range of activities in which immigrants are involved, governments in the country of origin and the country of destination have endeavoured to respond to these activities. Up until now, the question of the nature of political engagement across borders that migrants may pursue has yet to be studied in a broad sense.

Immigrant Entrepreneurs and Immigrants in the United States and Israel
Free Download Ivan Light, Richard E. Isralowitz, "Immigrant Entrepreneurs and Immigrants in the United States and Israel"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 1138317322, 1138317292 | EPUB | pages: 245 | 5.0 mb
First published in 1997, This book now opens the unduly delayed discussion about how Israel and the USA deal with immigration and how they are transformed by it. Approaching the discussion from the point of view of contemporary immigration research, this book prioritizes the economic processes of immigrant insertion in Israel and the USA, immigrant absorption and assimilation in both countries, policy debates, and women immigrants for extended treatment. Additionally, a photographic section mobilizes the new subject of visual sociology to continue the comparative analysis.
