Narrator: Jamie Figueroa, Kelle Rae Oie

A searing memoir that explores the institutions that defined a Puerto Rican woman and what she unlearned to rediscover herself "A lushly written, deeply felt investigation into the meanings of home, lineage and selfhood. Growing up in the Midwest, raised by a Puerto Rican mother who was abandoned by her family, Jamie Figueroa and her sisters were estranged from their culture, consumed by the whiteness that surrounded them. In Mother Island, Figueroa traces her search for identity as shaped by and against a mother who settled into the safety of assimilation. In lyrical, blistering prose, Figueroa recalls a childhood in Ohio in which she was relegated to the background of her mother's string of failed marriages; her own marriage in her early twenties to a man twice her age; how her work as a licensed massage therapist helped her heal her body trauma; and how becoming a mother has reshaped her relationship to her family and herself. Only as an adult in New Mexico was Figueroa able to forge her own path, using writing to recast her origin story. In a journey that takes her to Puerto Rico and back, Figueroa looks to her ancestors to reimagine her relationship to the past and to her mother's native island, reaching beyond her own mother into a greater experience of mothering and claiming herself. Drawing from Puerto Rican folklore and mythology, a literary lineage of women writers of color, and narratives of identity, Figueroa presents a cultural coming-of-age story. Candid and raw, Mother Island gets to the heart of the question: Who do we become when we are no longer trying to be someone else?

Some attribute Rhode Islanders' fascination with food to the state's ethnic mix: Italians who have an inherent love of food; French and Portuguese descendents, whose ancestral recipes are a part of the fabric of Rhode Island's cuisine; and the Native Americans who were the first to use the bounty of the sea and land.

The Oak Island Mystery World's Greatest Treasure Hunt
Free Download The Oak Island Mystery: World's Greatest Treasure Hunt By Lionel Fanthorpe
2012 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 1554889944 | EPUB | 5 MB
In 1795 three boys discovered the top of an ancient shaft on uninhabited Oak Island in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. The boys began to dig, and what they uncovered started the world's greatest and strangest treasure hunt but nobody knows what the treasure is. Two hundred years of courage, back-breaking effort, ingenuity, and engineering skills have failed to retrieve what is concealed there. Theories of what the treasure could be include Captain Kidd's bloodstained pirate gold, an army payroll left by the French or British military engineers, priceless ancient manuscripts, the body of an Arif or other religious refugee leader, or the lost treasure of the Templars. The Oak Island curse prophesies that the treasure will not be found until seven men are dead and the last oak has fallen. That last oak has already gone, and six treasure hunters have been killed. After years of research, the authors have finally solved the sinister riddle of Oak Island, but their answer is challenging, controversial, and disturbing. Something beyond price still lies waiting in the labyrinth.

Island Futures Conservation and Development Across the Asia–Pacific Region (2024)
Free Download Daniel Niles, "Island Futures: Conservation and Development Across the Asia-Pacific Region"
English | 2011 | pages: 194 | ISBN: 4431539883, 4431540881 | PDF | 5,6 mb
Islands face one of the most pressing issues of our time: how to balance ecological integrity with economic development and collective quality of life, including the need for social and conservation space. Islands are sites of rich and varied human and ecological diversity, but they are also often characterized by narrow resource bases and dependency on links to the outside world, and by their limited ability to determine the actual character of those links. This volume reviews the challenges of island development and conservation in the Asia-Pacific region. With emphasis on nature reserves and UNESCO World Heritage sites, chapters describe the benefits, barriers, and potential pitfalls in preserving such sites, managing biota, and attracting and controlling tourism. The book also provides a provocative challenge to move beyond the typical concerns of "sustainability" to the more holistic concept of "futurability", or "future potential" for convivial human-environmental interactions.

English | 2010 | pages: 141 | ISBN: 3709103673 | PDF | 23,5 mb
Book by Florian Beigel and Philip Christou, with contributions by Dominique Boudet (Consultant Editor), photo essay by Kang Woon-gu, and conversation with Ellis Woodman. Florian Beigel and the Architecture Research Unit were invited by the Provincial Government of Jeollabukdo, Korea in 2008, along with seven other teams to participate in an international ideas competition to develop urban design proposals for the Saemangeum land reclamation project. Saemangeum Island City comprises a surface area of some 400 km, more than a quater of the area of Greater London (which is approx. 1.570 km ). In late 2008, the design project by ARU / London Metropolitan University was declared one of three winning competition proposals (along with Columbia University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Kazuyo Sejima, Director of the 12th Architecture Biennale, has selected the ARU project to be part of the main exhibition in Venice 2010. The urban land-use concept plan begins with a phased landscape infrastructure design of 8 new islands with a highly remarkable solution as to environmental issues. This book offers a unique and timely approach to contemporary urban design research and practice.

A Shrinking Island Modernism and National Culture in England
Free Download Joshua Esty, "A Shrinking Island: Modernism and National Culture in England"
English | 2003 | pages: 304 | ISBN: 0691115494, 0691115486 | EPUB | 1,6 mb
This book describes a major literary culture caught in the act of becoming minor. In 1939, Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary, "Civilisation has shrunk." Her words captured not only the onset of World War II, but also a longer-term reversal of national fortune. The first comprehensive account of modernism and imperialism in England, A Shrinking Island tracks the joint eclipse of modernist aesthetics and British power from the literary experiments of the 1930s through the rise of cultural studies in the 1950s.
