Militarism and the Indo–Europeanizing of Europe
Free Download Robert Drews, "Militarism and the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe"
English | ISBN: 0367886006 | 2019 | 296 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book argues that the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe essentially began shortly before 1600 BC, when lands rich in natural resources were taken over by military forces from the Eurasian steppe and from southern Caucasia. First were the copper and silver mines (along with good harbors) in Greece, and the copper and gold mines of the Carpathian basin. By ca. 1500 BC other military men had taken over the amber coasts of Scandinavia and the metalworking district of the southern Alps. These military takeovers offer the most likely explanations for the origins of the Greek, Keltic, Germanic and Italic subgroups of the Indo-European language family.

Everyday Occupations Experiencing Militarism in South Asia and the Middle East
Free Download Everyday Occupations: Experiencing Militarism in South Asia and the Middle East By Kamala Visweswaran
2013 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 0812244877 | PDF | 8 MB
In the twenty-first century, political conflict and militarization have come to constitute a global social condition rather than a political exception. Military occupation increasingly informs the politics of both democracies and dictatorships, capitalist and formerly socialist regimes, raising questions about its relationship to sovereignty and the nation-state form. Israel and India are two of the world's most powerful postwar democracies yet have long-standing military occupations. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey have passed through periods of military dictatorship, but democracy has yielded little for their ethnic minorities who have been incorporated into the electoral process. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh (like India, Pakistan, and Turkey) have felt the imprint of socialism; declarations of peace after long periods of conflict in these countries have not improved the conditions of their minority or indigenous peoples but rather have resulted in "violent peace" and remilitarization. Indeed, the existence of standing troops and ongoing state violence against peoples struggling for self-determination in these regions suggests the expanding and everyday nature of military occupation. Such everydayness raises larger issues about the dominant place of the military in society and the social values surrounding militarism.Everyday Occupations examines militarization from the standpoints of both occupier and occupied. With attention to gender, poetics, satire, and popular culture, contributors who have lived and worked in occupied areas in the Middle East and South Asia explore what kinds of society are foreclosed or made possible by militarism. The outcome is a powerful contribution to the ethnography of political violence.Contributors: Nosheen Ali, Kabita Chakma, Richard Falk, Sandya Hewamanne, Mohamad Junaid, Rhoda Kanaaneh, Hisyar Ozsoy, Cheran Rudhramoorthy, Serap Ruken Sengul, Kamala Visweswaran.

Strange Liberators Militarism, Mayhem, and the Pursuit of Profit
Strange Liberators: Militarism, Mayhem, and the Pursuit of Profit By Gregory Elich
2006 | 424 Pages | ISBN: 1595265708 | PDF | 26 MB
"...this book was a huge eye-opener. . . . Elich has written an amazin book. See for yourself what 'democracy' from America means to the rest of the world."-Paul Lappen, Midwest Book Review "A great book . . .no amount of praise can do it justice."-Sam B, Natna Blogspot "If the reader comes to this timely book believing much of the stories about Western good intentions or "rogue state" nefariousness, it will be a bitter pill to swallow, as these chapters are each backed up with a tremendous wealth of citations from reputable news outlets, including primarily "statements against interest." Yet, even if the reader is one who already is critical or suspicious of imperialism, the wealth of new information will open eyes yet further-and even challenge many perceptions already held. Simply put, this book is not to be missed, and to be lent to all who will read it."-Malcolm Stainsby, Online Journal "You should buy this book and read it and ask your libraries to purchase it. It is a must read for all progressive people who want to strengthen their understanding of contemporary imperialism and thus their ability not to be fooled by propaganda."-Norman Markowitz, Political Affairs "So how does one convey the nature of a rapacious, imperialist state to all but the already converted without reeling off statistics or resorting to lefty versions of sound bites? Elich does it with a good deal of sarcasm laced with irony, and then pours the facts on top as a rich source for us to relish . . . .gaining access to the facts is akin to an archaeological excavation that few have either the skill, understanding, or patience to undertake. Luckily, we have people like Elich to do the digging for us."-William Bowles, Investigating New Imperialism "Gregory Elich is the model investigative journalist of the anti-imperialist left: tenacious, thorough, penetrating, meticulous and above all, uncompromising. On Yugoslavia, North Korea, Zimbabwe, and Iraq, no one digs deeper, and no one uncovers more, than Elich."-Stephen Gowans, political commentator, What's Left "Gregory Elich is the model investigative journalist of the anti-imperialist left: tenacious, thorough, penetrating, meticulous and above all, uncompromising. On Yugoslavia, North Korea, Zimbabwe, and Iraq, no one digs deeper, and no one uncovers more, than Elich." Stephen Gowans, political commentator, What's Left "Gregory Elich offers a clear and vital analysis of the goals of private interests and their secret collusion with the Bush administration to cover up a broad range of dangers, from war to global warming. Scholars, researchers, and the lay public interested in US foreign policy will find this book both vital and illuminating."-Lenora Foerstel, vice president of Women for Mutual Security, and author of Confronting the Margaret Mead Legacy "Gregory Elich has dedicated himself to skillfully unearthing and disseminating the information that typically goes unsaid. He provides us with the well-researched fundamentals we cannot and should not expect to get from our newspapers or televisions. Put another way, Elich teaches us to identify the 'gates' that restrict our freedom of thought."-Mickey Z, author of The Seven Deadly Spins and 50 American Revolutions You're Not Supposed to Know

Zionism, Militarism and the Decline of US Power
James Petras, "Zionism, Militarism and the Decline of US Power"
English | ISBN: 0932863604 | 2009 | 192 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Criticizing and exposing the powerful public role of American Zionism in shaping US policy in the Middle East is the biggest taboo in US politics. Politicians, academics, journalists, prelates and ordinary American citizens who publicly voice their dissent are targeted for political purges, denied academic tenure, and access to the mass media and scurrilously labeled as 'anti-Semites' by the Zionist power configuration. This book challenges the claims of Zionist apologists who argue that the 'Israel power configuration' is just another lobby, by empirically examining several major policies. The case studies demonstrate conclusively that today issues of war and peace, trade and investment agreements by US, European and Asian oil companies and banks in the Middle East, multi-billion dollar arms sales to Saudi Arabia are all subject to ZPC scrutiny and veto. The new 'broad definition' of what affects Israel includes Lobby backing for Bush's shredding of Constitutional restraints on his war powers. It is not merely regional expansion which 'interests Israel' but economic and military aid and sales-namely who determines what military goods the US can sell to Arab states as well as what high end military technology the US should provide to the world's fourth biggest arms merchant-Israel (which is also the US's arms export competitor).the Zionist power configuration (ZPC) in the US Congress has blocked trade and sales to Saudi Arabia, despite the backing of the US oil and military-industrial sectors. Thanks to its influence in the mass media, the ZPC effectively delayed, degraded and then marginalized a long-awaited report by16 US national intelligence agencies on Iran's non-military nuclear program in favor of dubious bellicose claims issued by the state of Israel. At a time when our national economy is in deep crisis, the Israel Lobby is pushing for a new military confrontation and war with Iran, oblivious to its catastrophic consequences for the American people. Major pro-Israel officials and politicians in Homeland Security, the National Security Council, the Congress and the White House are passing more police-state legislation to control and silence the growing majority opposition to the expansion of wars in the Middle East promoted by the Israel Lobby. This book establishes the reasons why coming to grips with the impact of Israel and the Israel Lobby on US policy is so essential to bringing peace to the Middle East, restoring public freedoms in our country and taking back our right to decide not only US foreign policy, but our domestic policy as well, in the interests of the vast majority of the American people.

Masculinity, Militarism and Eighteenth-Century Culture, 1689-1815
Masculinity, Militarism and Eighteenth-Century Culture, 1689-1815 by Julia Banister
2018 | ISBN: 1107195195, 131664667X | English | 264 pages | PDF | 36 MB
This book investigates the figure of the military man in the long eighteenth century in order to explore how ideas about militarism served as vehicles for conceptualizations of masculinity. Bringing together representations of military men and accounts of court martial proceedings, this book examines eighteenth-century arguments about masculinity and those that appealed to the 'naturally' sexed body and construed masculinity as social construction and performance. Julia Banister's discussion draws on a range of printed materials, including canonical literary and philosophical texts by David Hume, Adam Smith, Horace Walpole and Jane Austen, and texts relating to the naval trials of, amongst others, Admiral John Byng. By mapping eighteenth-century ideas about militarism, including professionalism and heroism, alongside broader cultural concerns with politeness, sensibility, the Gothic past and celebrity, Julia Banister reveals how ideas about masculinity and militarism were shaped by and within eighteenth-century culture.
