Meaningful Aging from a Humanist Perspective
Free Download Peter Derkx, "Meaningful Aging from a Humanist Perspective"
English | ISBN: 3031538684 | 2024 | 104 pages | PDF | 1525 KB
Aging is a topic of growing interest. As life expectancy in western societies is increasing, the growing number and proportion of 'elderly' persons raise urgent questions on how to age 'well'. Predominantly, questions on aging are taken from biomedical and economic paradigms, which are intertwined. While people of age are seen as a cost in society, biomedical research aims at curing the declining effects of aging, thus furthering ideals of 'healthy' aging, 'active' aging, or 'successful' aging. In this book, Peter Derkx offers a comprehensive account of meaningful aging with Anthony Pinn responding in a fruitful and constructive way, for the benefit and edification of all of us.

Engineering in Perspective Lessons for a Successful Career
Free Download Engineering in Perspective: Lessons for a Successful Career By Tony Ridley
2017 | 340 Pages | ISBN: 1786342286 | PDF | 61 MB
Engineering in Perspective provides a unique look into the career of one of Britain's most widely experienced engineers, Professor Tony Ridley. Ridley analyses key moments from his career to identify the real-world skills required for success. Through this, he examines how important it is that a successful engineer has not only traditional engineering skills but also good interpersonal skills coupled with a deep understanding of social, economic and political factors. Ridley's career case-studies include his time as first Director General of the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive and working on the creation of the Metro; first Managing Director of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway; Chairman and Managing Director of London Underground; the development of the Docklands Light Railway; and working through the trauma of the Kings Cross fire. As Professor of Transport Engineering at Imperial College London, Ridley was involved in national and international engineering bodies, including President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The book contains papers from this time that develop the concept of the 'breadth of engineering'. Highly relevant for engineering students, newly qualified engineers, educators and employers, this book allows examination of successes and failures of important engineering projects from the 20th century, with lessons and insights for the 21st century engineer. Readership: Engineering students, newly qualified engineers, educators and employers.

Employee Proactivity in Organizations An Attachment Perspective
Free Download Chia-Huei Wu, "Employee Proactivity in Organizations: An Attachment Perspective"
English | ISBN: 1529200571 | 2019 | 142 pages | PDF | 771 KB
What makes some people more likely to initiate positive change within their organizations? Can this behaviour be influenced by management? Employee proactivity has largely been understood in terms of employees changing their environment or changing themselves. In this novel study Wu offers an alternative lens through which to examine such behaviour - the concept of attachment theory. Wu integrates the current understanding of motivational factors in shaping proactive workers, through his introduction to attachment theory, and development of it as a theoretical framework. This compelling approach provides academics with a new way of thinking about employee behaviour while also acting as a guide for practitioners and managers.

A Weberian Perspective on Home, Nature and Sport Disenchantment and Salvation
Free Download Michael Symonds, "A Weberian Perspective on Home, Nature and Sport: Disenchantment and Salvation "
English | ISBN: 1032151102 | 2024 | 188 pages | EPUB, PDF | 609 KB + 5 MB
This book extends Max Weber's theory of the value-spheres of modernity into wholly new areas, showing that the addition of home, nature and sport to Weber's own list of five spheres (economic, scientific/intellectual, political/legal, erotic and aesthetic) yields original insights into these aspects of modernity and modernity itself. It shows how each of these new spheres is able to create its own 'inner cosmos' of salvation from rationalised senselessness, just as Weber's 'irrational' spheres offer release from the grim reality of capitalism, the disenchanted universe and the bureaucratic state formed by the more 'rationalised' spheres. Drawing on a wide, cross-disciplinary range of sources, the author sheds light on the role of home in creating a sense of our enchanted past, of nature in helping to restore to the world a teleological meaning constructed from innocence and purity and of sport in imposing sense on the world, at least temporarily.
