Outsider Art and Psychoanalytic Psychiatry
Free Download Outsider Art and Psychoanalytic Psychiatry: The "Nativity of Fools" at the Cogoleto Psychiatric Hospital
English | 2024 | ISBN: 103246450X | 167 Pages | PDF (True) | 9 MB
Cosimo Schinaia explores the history of the Cogoleto Psychiatric Hospital, now abandoned, and how its architecture and ideology influenced treatment of the patients who lived there. At the book's core is an in-depth historical, anthropological, and psychoanalytical study of the "Nativity of Fools," a large art installation constructed from 1980 to 1984 by patients, nurses, and psychiatrists, representing their everyday lives in the asylum. Schinaia's understanding of the scenes considers questions of nostalgia, isolation, privacy, and freedom and reflects on the risks of institutionalised segregation. The book proposes original psychoanalytic reflections on the subject of the obsolescence of psychiatric hospitals and treating mental suffering without institutionalising people.

Psychosis, Psychiatry and Psychospiritual Considerations
Free Download Psychosis, Psychiatry and Psychospiritual Considerations by Spittles
English | November 29, 2022 | ISBN: 1801520151 | 400 pages | PDF | 5.05 Mb
From a psychiatric perspective, psychosis is generally viewed as a psychopathological and often incomprehensible mental disorder of biological cause. In his book, Brian Spittles argues that this represents a rather limited view, and that a psychospiritual investigation of psychosis may enable a better understanding of its nature and determinants. His aim is not to negate the discipline of psychiatry, but to demonstrate the viability and efficacy of incorporating psychospiritual considerations into psychosis research.

Healing Psychiatry Bridging the ScienceHumanism Divide
Free Download Healing Psychiatry: Bridging the Science/Humanism Divide by David H. Brendel, T.M. Luhrmann
English | 2006 | ISBN: 0262025949 | 200 Pages | PDF | 712.0 KB
Psychiatry today is torn by opposing sensibilities. Is it primarily a science of brain functioning or primarily an art of understanding the human mind in its social and cultural context? Competing conceptions of mental illness as amenable to scientific explanation or as deeply complex and beyond the reach of empirical study have left the field conceptually divided between science and humanism. In Healing Psychiatry David Brendel takes a novel approach to this stubborn problem. Drawing on the classical American pragmatism of Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey, as well as contemporary work of pragmatic bioethicists, Brendel proposes a "clinical pragmatism" that synthesizes scientific and humanistic approaches to mental health care. Psychiatry, he argues, must integrate scientific and humanistic models by emphasizing the practical, pluralistic, participatory, and provisional aspects of clinical diagnosis and treatment. Psychiatrists need to have the skill and flexibility to use scientific and humanistic approaches in a collaborative, open-ended clinical process; they must recognize the complexity of human suffering even as they strive for scientific rigor. This is the only way, he writes, that psychiatry can heal its conceptual rift and the emotional wounds of its patients.
