Speaking Yiddish to Chickens Holocaust Survivors on South Jersey Poultry Farms
Free Download Seth Stern, "Speaking Yiddish to Chickens: Holocaust Survivors on South Jersey Poultry Farms"
English | ISBN: 1978831617 | 2023 | 288 pages | PDF | 1447 KB
Most of the roughly 140,000 Holocaust survivors who came to the United States in the first decade after World War II settled in big cities such as New York. But a few thousand chose an alternative way of life on American farms. More of these accidental farmers wound up raising chickens in southern New Jersey than anywhere else. Speaking Yiddish to Chickens is the first book to chronicle this little-known chapter in American Jewish history when these mostly Eastern European refugees - including the author's grandparents - found an unlikely refuge and gateway to new lives in the US on poultry farms. They gravitated to a section of south Jersey anchored by Vineland, a small rural city where previous waves of Jewish immigrants had built a rich network of cultural and religious institutions.

Child Survivors of the Holocaust The Youngest Remnant and the American Experience
Free Download Child Survivors of the Holocaust: The Youngest Remnant and the American Experience By Beth B. Cohen
2018 | 230 Pages | ISBN: 0813584973 | PDF | 3 MB
The majority of European Jewish children alive in 1939 were murdered during the Holocaust. Of 1.5 million children, only an estimated 150,000 survived. In the aftermath of the Shoah, efforts by American Jews brought several thousand of these child survivors to the United States. InChild Survivors of the Holocaust, historian Beth B. Cohen weaves together survivor testimonies and archival documents to bring their story to light. She reveals that even as child survivors were resettled and "saved," they struggled to adapt to new lives as members of adoptive families, previously unknown American Jewish kin networks, or their own survivor relatives. Nonetheless, the youngsters moved ahead. As Cohen demonstrates, the experiences both during and after the war shadowed their lives and relationships through adulthood, yet an identity as "survivors" eluded them for decades. Now, as the last living link to the Holocaust, the voices of Child Survivors are finally being heard.

In fact, the feeling that "I should be healed by now" is one that every survivor will have to deal with at some time. A survivor himself, Cecil Murphey writes, "I absolutely affirm that God can produce such a miracle. I don't know of any, but I still think that it is possible."

System Failure The Silencing of Rape Survivors
Free Download Michael Bradley, "System Failure: The Silencing of Rape Survivors"
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1922464783 | EPUB | pages: 96 | 0.2 mb
One in five Australian women has been the victim of a sexual assault. For these women, there is less than a 1 per cent chance that their rapist has been arrested, prosecuted, and convicted of the crime. These are the bare numerical facts of system failure. We offer rape survivors a stark choice: go to the police, or remain silent. In recent times, the public pressure on survivors to report has increased, alongside a growing focus on two other options: civil action against the perpetrator, or going public. These evolving social responses are intended to offer an alternative to the tradition of silencing. However, each of these choices, for survivors, involves a further sacrifice of what they have already lost. The legal system's responses to rape were designed without survivors in mind, and they do not address, in any way, the questions that survivors ask or the needs they express. Simply put, on the systemic response to rape, we are having the wrong conversation.

Borrowed Time Survivors of Nazi Terezín Remember [Audiobook]
Free Download Dennis Carlyle Darling, Adam Barr (Narrator), "Borrowed Time: Survivors of Nazi Terezín Remember"
English | ASIN: B0CTB1TRQ6 | 2024 | MP3@64 kbps | ~13:44:00 | 389 MB
Documentation, through photographs and interviews, of those who survived the unique Nazi ghetto/camp located at Terezin, Czech Republic.
Dennis Carlyle Darling has photographed and interviewed hundreds of Holocaust survivors who spent time at the German transit camp and ghetto at Terezin, a former eighteenth-century military garrison located north of Prague. Many of the prisoners were kept there until they could be transported to Auschwitz or other camps, but unlike German captives elsewhere, they were allowed to participate in creative activities that the Nazis used for propaganda purposes to show the world how well they were treating Jews. Although it was not classified as a "death camp," more than 33,000 prisoners died at Terezin from hunger, disease, and mistreatment.

Survival Analysis with Long–Term Survivors
Free Download Survival Analysis with Long-Term Survivors By Ross A. Maller; Xian Zhou
1997 | 308 Pages | ISBN: 0471962015 | PDF | 20 MB
The aim of this book is to suggest and exemplify a systematic methodology for analysing survival data which contains "immune", or "cured" individuals, denoted generically as "long-term survivors". Such data occurs in medical and epidemiological applications, where the intention may be to identify whether or not cured or immune individuals are present in a population, perhaps as a result of treatments given; in the analysis of recidivism data in criminology, where the intentions are similar with respect to prisoners released from and possibly returning to prison; and in many other areas where followup data is available on individuals, with the possibility that not all suffer the event under investigation. Both nonparametric and parametric methods are proposed and developed. The effects of covariate information can be assessed via a kind of generalised linear framework in the parametric analyses. The proposed methodologies are supported by asymptotic analyses and simulations of real situations. While these theoretical underpinnings are presented in reasonable rigour and detail, the book is aimed very much at the practitioner who wishes to analyse survival data with (or even without) immunes.
