Music and Temple Ritual in South India
Free Download William Tallotte, "Music and Temple Ritual in South India "
English | ISBN: 1032313757 | 2022 | 262 pages | PDF | 12 MB
Music and Temple Ritual in South India: Performing for Śiva documents the musical practices of the periya mēḷam, a South Indian instrumental ensemble of professional musicians who perform during the rituals and festivals of high-caste (Brahmanical) Tamil Hindu temples dedicated to the Pan-Indian god Śiva - an important patron of music since at least the tenth century. It explores the ways in which music and ritual are mutually constitutive, illuminating the cultural logics whereby performing and listening are integral to the kinetic, sensory and affective experiences that enable, shape and stimulate ritual communication in present-day devotional Hinduism. More than a rich and vivid ethnographic description of a local tradition, the book also develops a comprehensive and original analytical model, in which music is understood as both a situated and creative activity, and where the fluid relationship between humans and non-humans, in this case divine beings, is truly taken into consideration.

The Gospel Between Emperor and Temple in the Gospel of Mark
Free Download The Gospel Between Emperor and Temple in the Gospel of Mark: A Story of Epoch-making Proximity to the Divine Through Victory and Cult by Morten Horning Jensen
English | June 1, 2023 | ISBN: 3161618580 | 557 pages | PDF | 6.54 Mb
The Gospel of Mark pointedly opens with the statement, "the beginning of the gospel". This raises the question: What does 'the gospel' (t? e?a???????) mean to Mark? Traditionally, an explanation has been found in the so-called 'religious use' of the notion of the 'messenger on the mountain' in Isa 40:9 and 52:7, paving the way for an understanding of Jesus's death as a sin sacrifice connected to Isa 53. Under the influence of recent postcolonial and/or anti-imperial reading strategies, however, Mark's gospel notion has rather been understood as tailored to counter a Roman dressing of the emperor as 'gospels' to the world. Morten Horning Jensen re-investigates the entire concept of 'gospel' and concludes that Mark uses the concept to communicate the 'epoch-making victory' he finds to be the product of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
