Beyond Mimesis Aesthetic Experience in Uncanny Valleys
Free Download Jörg Sternagel, "Beyond Mimesis: Aesthetic Experience in Uncanny Valleys "
English | ISBN: 1538171791 | 2023 | 226 pages | EPUB, PDF | 5 MB + 9 MB
Providing a solid media-philosophical groundwork, Beyond Mimesis contributes to the theory of mimesis and alterity in performance philosophy while serving to stimulate and inspire future inquiries where studies in media and art intersect with philosophy. It collects a wide range of philosophical and artistic thinkers' work to develop an exacting framework with clear movement beyond mimesis in aesthetic experiences in uncanny valleys. Together, the chapters ask if intersubjective acts of relating that are defined by alterity, responsivity or witness and trust can be transferred to artificial beings without remainder.

The Uncanny Rise of Medical Hypnotism, 1888–1914
Free Download The Uncanny Rise of Medical Hypnotism, 1888-1914: Between Imagination and Suggestion
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031427246 | 387 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 27 MB
This book explores the improbable rise of medical hypnotism in Victorian Britain and its subsequent assimilation and neglect. It follows the careers of the 'New Hypnotists': Charles Lloyd Tuckey, John Milne Bramwell, George Kingsbury and Robert Felkin. This loosely knit group all trained with the Suggestion School of Nancy and published books on hypnotism. They had to confront the many public and medical prejudices against the trance state which had persisted after the scandalous disgrace of John Elliotson and medical mesmerism, fifty years before.

Petrifying Gazes Danae and the Uncanny Space
Free Download Barbara Baert, "Petrifying Gazes: Danae and the Uncanny Space "
English | ISBN: 9042946385 | 2021 | 117 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Of all the ancient myths where rain plays an important role, the impregnation of Danae by Zeus through a golden rain is perhaps the one most often depicted in art. This essay is dedicated to the artistic afterlife of the myth, with special focus on the painting of Danae (1527) by Jan Gossaert van Mabuse (1478-1532). Gossaert's Danae is a sophisticated articulation of outer and inner discourse: the hard, dry, background, with its eclectic architecture, in contrast with the sweltering, moist, foreground with the figure's naked body. This essay develops Gossaert's complex phantasmata surrounding architecture, decoration, and the female body in three spaces: the intimate space of impregnation, the psychosomatic space, and, third, the petrifying space of Medusa. Barbara Baert writes: "Danae is the living emanation of painting as the uttermost exhibitionistic medium. Her unveiled skin fragile exposed in the midst of an overwhelming symphonic outburst of details, facades, windows. Danae: martyr of glossy materials - marble and flesh - unable to disappear in her own skin; held hostage within a medium of walls. Her only desire is to disappear in the ultimate thin membrane, to vaporize beyond the harsh brocks and, then, at the very end, leave the medium of textile too. There were threads become drippings, lines become tears."

The Queer Uncanny New Perspectives on the Gothic
Free Download Paulina Palmer, "The Queer Uncanny: New Perspectives on the Gothic"
English | 2012 | pages: 242 | ISBN: 0708324592, 0708324584 | PDF | 2,0 mb
The Queer Uncanny investigates the roles played by the concept of the uncanny, as defined by Sigmund Freud and other theorists, in representing lesbian, gay, and transgender characters in a selection of British, American, and Caribbean fiction published between 1980 and 2007. Paulina Palmer analyzes novels by Christopher Bram, Philip Hensher, Alan Hollingurst, Randall Kenan, Shani Mootoo, Sarah Schulman, Ali Smith, Sarah Waters, and Jeanette Winterson, among others, highlighting the inventive ways these authors recast traditional Gothic motifs from a queer perspective. Topics discussed include secrets and their disclosure, queer spectrality, the homely/unhomely house, the grotesque, lesbian social invisibility, transgender doubles, and the intersection between sexuality and race.

Gothic Animals Uncanny Otherness and the Animal With– Out
Free Download Gothic Animals: Uncanny Otherness and the Animal With-Out by Ruth Heholt, Melissa Edmundson
English | EPUB (True) | 2020 | 309 Pages | ISBN : 3030345394 | 4.3 MB
This book begins with the assumption that the presence of non-human creatures causes an always-already uncanny rift in human assumptions about reality. Exploring the dark side of animal nature and the 'otherness' of animals as viewed by humans, and employing cutting-edge theory on non-human animals, eco-criticism, literary and cultural theory, this book takes the Gothic genre into new territory.
