Lesbian Rule Cultural Criticism and the Value of Desire
Free Download Lesbian Rule: Cultural Criticism and the Value of Desire By Amy Villarejo
2003 | 247 Pages | ISBN: 0822331551 | PDF | 11 MB
With hair slicked back and shirt collar framing her young patrician face, Katherine Hepburn's image in the 1935 film Sylvia Scarlett was seen by many as a lesbian representation. Yet, Amy Villarejo argues, there is no final ground upon which to explain why that image of Hepburn signifies lesbian or why such a cross-dressing Hollywood fantasy edges into collective consciousness as a lesbian narrative. Investigating what allows viewers to perceive an image or narrative as "lesbian," Villarejo presents a theoretical exploration of lesbian visibility. Focusing on images of lesbians in film, she analyzes what these representations contain and their limits. She combines Marxist theories of value with poststructuralist insights to argue that lesbian visibility operates simultaneously as an achievement and a ruse, a possibility for building a new visual politics and away of rendering static and contained what lesbian might mean.Integrating cinema studies, queer and feminist theory, and cultural studies, Villarejo illuminates the contexts within which the lesbian is rendered visible. Toward that end, she analyzes key portrayals of lesbians in public culture, particularly in documentary film. She considers a range of films-from documentaries about Cuba and lesbian pulp fiction to Exile Shanghai and The Brandon Teena Story-and, in doing so, brings to light a nuanced economy of value and desire.

Global Value Chains and Industrial Development Participation, Upgrading, and Connectivity
Free Download Global Value Chains and Industrial Development: Participation, Upgrading, and Connectivity by Ikuo Kuroiwa , So Umezaki
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 132 Pages | ISBN : 9819700205 | 9.9 MB
This book aims to investigate the global value chain (GVC) from a viewpoint of industrial development and examine how GVC participation, upgrading, and connectivity have affected structural transformation in developing economies. It first reviews the indexes to measure progresses in GVC participation and upgrading. Then it examines factors affecting these progresses, using original measures of connectivity, which are computed based on the complex network theory. Another distinguished feature of the study is its in-depth analyses on the relationship between economic development and GVC participation based on the hypothesis of nonlinear relationship which is drawn from authors past studies on Asian economies. Major findings include (1) inverted-U shaped relationship between backward participation and income levels, (2) U shaped relationship between forward participation and income level, (3) marginal but significant impacts of maritime and aviation connectivity on GVC participation, (4) significant and different roles of basic and advanced education on the upgrading in GVCs, and (5) the importance of technological intensities in export in sustaining economic growth.

Medieval or Early Modern The Value of a Traditional Historical Division
Free Download Medieval or Early Modern: The Value of a Traditional Historical Division, "Medieval or Early Modern: The Value of a Traditional Historical Division"
English | ISBN: 1443874515 | 2015 | 195 pages | PDF | 2 MB
For half a millennium it has been customary for many historians to refer to the period between the fall of Rome and the end of the fifteenth century as medieval , a tradition which hardened into a professional orthodoxy during the nineteenth century. In the late twentieth century, it also seemed convenient to many to describe the first half of a steadily lengthening modern period as early modern , which also hardened into an orthodoxy among English-speakers, at least, by the 1980s. Both terms were, however, always disturbingly imprecise, defining periods which could vary by centuries between individual authors, and which were never adopted by some sub-disciplines and allied disciplines of history. Moreover, they also seemed to carry a lot of ideological baggage, privileging modernity and all its associations over earlier ages, and especially being used to disparage the medieval . Both features were attractive to writers who found their flexibility and prejudices convenient, but have recently come to trouble many others, leading to calls for the abandonment of this terminology. This collection of essays draws attention to this problem and focuses attention on various possible solutions to it. It assembles a team of contributors who are all deeply concerned with the issue while representing different kinds of history and allied disciplines, some traditional and some recently appeared, and also different attitudes to the resolution of the matter. The result is not, however, a mere divergence of opinions and a hubbub of voices. Instead, it suggests that different solutions to the problem are appropriate to distinctive kinds of history-writing, and different geographical regions; while even historians studying the same area in the same period in the same way can achieve useful and complementary insights by reaching opposed conclusions over whether the traditional divisions by period are still helpful.

Can one be both an ethical person and an effective businessperson? Stephen Green, an ordained priest and the chairman of HSBC, thinks so. In Good Value, Green retraces the history of the global economy and its financial systems, and shows that while the marketplace has delivered huge advantages to humanity, it has also abandoned over a billion people to extreme poverty, encouraged overconsumption and debt, and ravaged the environment. How do we reconcile the demands of capitalism with both the common good and our own spiritual and psychological needs as individuals? To answer that, and some of the most vexing questions of our age, Green takes us on a lively and erudite journey through history, looking for lessons in the work of economists and philosophers, businessmen and poets, theologians and novelists, playwrights and political scientists. An essential business a man who is uniquely qualified to write it, Good Value is a timely and persuasive analys
