Kibbutz Virgin A British Teenager's Account of Six Months Living on a Kibbutz in Israel
Free Download Jonathan Nicholas, "Kibbutz Virgin: A British Teenager's Account of Six Months Living on a Kibbutz in Israel"
English | 2013 | pages: 288 | ISBN: 1780882319 | EPUB | 2,1 mb
Jonathan was a naive eighteen-year-old who had just finished school. His cousin Andy suggested they fly to Israel in order to experience life on a kibbutz as a 'volunteer'. Jonathan had never even heard the word kibbutz and he knew very little about Israel, but he agreed to take part in the adventure and made the necessary arrangements. He arrived at a fortified settlement in the Upper Galilee, surrounded by a high fence and rolls of barbed wire, called Kibbutz Dafna. It was nestled at the top of the Hula Valley, in the shadow of the spectacular snow-capped peak of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights. He was allocated a thin, iron-framed bed under a window in a small, filthy room that he shared with three other English men - and colonies of ants and fast-running cockroaches. Jonathan's first impressions were not promising. The food was awful and he had absolutely nothing in common with anyone at the kibbutz. He was set to work on night shifts in a bleak factory, on some dangerous and arcane machinery. He'd never worked in a factory before. He'd never worked shifts before. He hated it. He struggled with the physically demanding and unpleasant work, and was hopeless at it. He realised he had set himself a target of staying there for six months, which seemed like an awful prospect. Unable to face the ignominy and embarrassment of running home in the first week, he decided he must do his best, and try to overcome adversity. Kibbutz Virgin is his story. Read on as Jonathan experiences danger when caught in cross-border conflict between Lebanon and Syria, romance as he shacks up with an American girl called Chrissie, and adventure as he tries some not-so-legal substances. Kibbutz Virgin will appeal to fans of travel writing and those interested in Middle Eastern history. Jonathan Nicholas, who published Hospital Beat in 2011 with Matador, has been inspired by Dirk Bogarde.

The Sacred Space of the Virgin Mary in Hispanic Literature from Gonzalo de Berceo to Ambrosio Montesino
Free Download The Sacred Space of the Virgin Mary in Hispanic Literature from Gonzalo de Berceo to Ambrosio Montesino By Lesley K. Twomey
2019 | 403 Pages | ISBN: 1855663236 | PDF | 6 MB
This book takes a fresh look at some of the seemingly tired images of the Virgin Mary across the medieval and early Golden Age period in Hispanic literatures. It explores the Virgin as a gateway and as a Temple, as a garden and as a fountain, as a scented space, and as a strong defensive place (fortress or castle wall). It also explores her as a home and as a nuptial bedchamber, and sets these images in the context of known liturgical usage in medieval and early modern Spain.

Elizabeth Virgin Queen
Free Download Philippa Jones, "Elizabeth: Virgin Queen?"
English | 2010 | pages: 336 | ISBN: 1847735150, 1435132920 | EPUB | 0,5 mb
'Gloriana', 'Faerie Queene', 'Queen Bess' are just some of the names given to Elizabeth I, the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. But the name for which she is perhaps best remembered and which best explains why Elizabeth was the last of the Tudor monarchs, was the 'Virgin Queen'. But how appropriate is that image? Were Elizabeth's suitors and favourites really just innocent intrigues? Or were they much more than that? Was Elizabeth really a woman driven by her passions, who had affairs with several men, including Thomas Seymour, while he was still the husband of her guardian Catherine Parr, and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester - a man adjudged to have been the great love of her life? And, are the rumours of Elizabeth's illegitimate children true? Was the 'Virgin Queen' image a carefully thought out piece of Tudor propaganda? Historian Philippa Jones, author of the acclaimed "The Other Tudors", challenges the many myths and truths surrounding Elizabeth's life and reveals the passionate woman behind the powerful and fearless 'Virgin Queen'.

The Virgin Mary in Byzantium, c.400–1000 Hymns, Homilies and Hagiography
Free Download The Virgin Mary in Byzantium, c.400-1000: Hymns, Homilies and Hagiography by Mary B. Cunningham
English | November 11, 2021 | ISBN: 110884569X | 290 pages | PDF | 7.73 Mb
The Virgin Mary assumed a position of central importance in Byzantium. This book examines her portrayal in liturgical texts during the first six centuries of Byzantine history. Focusing on three main literary genres that celebrated this holy figure, it highlights the ways in which writers adapted their messages for different audiences. Mary is portrayed variously as defender of the imperial city, Constantinople, virginal Mother of God, and ascetic disciple of Christ. Preachers, hymnographers, and hagiographers used rhetoric to enhance Mary's powerful status in Eastern Christian society, depicting her as virgin and mother, warrior and ascetic, human and semi-divine being. Their paradoxical statements were based on the fundamental mystery that Mary embodied: she was the mother of Christ, the Word of God, who provided him with the human nature that he assumed in his incarnation. Dr Cunningham's authoritative study makes a major contribution to the history of Christianity.

Laments of the Virgin Mary represent a devotional genre that offered its clerical and lay audiences of the High and Late Middle Ages a deeply inspiring, yet at the same time ambiguous, religious experience. Through the deeply emotional and markedly animated representation of the Passion, seen as if through the eyes of the mother of God, audiences and performers were not only reminded of the redemptive power of the Cross, but encouraged to experience Christ's sacrifice in a more personal and intimate manner. In the pious practice of

Mary in the Middle Ages by Luigi Gambero In his book Mary and the Fathers of the Church, Fr. Luigi Gambero presented a comprehensive survey of Marian doctrine and devotion during the first eight Christian centuries. Mary in the Middle Ages continues this journey up to the end of the fifteenth century, surveying the growth of Marian doctrine and devotion during one of the most important eras of Christian history: the Middle Ages. Fr. Gambero presents the thoughts, words, and prayers of great theologians, bishops, monks, and mystics who witnessed to and promoted the dedication of the Christian people to the Mother of God. Each chapter concludes with readings from the works of these important authors. Many of these texts have never before been translated into English.
