Contemporary Development Ethics from an African Perspective Selected Readings
Free Download Beatrice Okyere-Manu, "Contemporary Development Ethics from an African Perspective: Selected Readings "
English | ISBN: 3031328973 | 2023 | 285 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book offers fresh academic insights, reflections, questions, issues, and approaches to development ethics, taking into account, African values and ethics. Development ethics is an area of applied ethics that examines the moral issues involved in global, social, and economic transformation. While it is a relatively new discipline, there have been numerous scholarly publications on it from Western perspectives. However, only a few studies that focused on development ethics from the African perspective. To address this gap, the book seeks to answer critical questions such as "What does development mean to Africans?", "How can we measure development?", "Who gets to decide?", and "What constitutes just development in Africa?"

Conflict and Concord The Ambivalence of African MigrantHost Relations in South Africa
Free Download Christopher Isike, "Conflict and Concord: The Ambivalence of African Migrant/Host Relations in South Africa"
English | ISBN: 9811910324 | 2022 | 286 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The book is a response to the dominant discourse of South Africa as unwelcoming to African immigrants. Acknowledging the reality of xenophobia against African migrants in South Africa, it explores the positive spaces of interactions between South Africans and African migrants that do not necessarily result in tension. Hence, the book is about conviviality, cohabitation, interdependency and the production of a multicultural rainbow nation. South Africa, its constitution and representation as a multicultural society is the perfect context to experiment with the ideas in the book. Part of the objectives is therefore to demonstrate, as contained in the title, the ambivalence of this relationship which the popular discourse of xenophobia has silenced.

Chinua Achebe European–African Frictions
Free Download Sener Saltürk, "Chinua Achebe: European-African Frictions"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 3656304408 | EPUB | pages: 26 | 0.2 mb
Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: [...] Although there is quite a number of reasonable arguments for not welcoming Turkey to the European "family", such as financial as well as political and ethical, the majority of Turkish people consider prejudices against Turks as the actual reason for their rejection: they are (culturally) too different and more than the half of the European citizens are against a Turkish membership in the EU. Instead, a "privileged partnership" is being proposed by some conservative European governments (or opposing parties such as the German Christian Democratic party), instead of a full membership. I think "full" needs to be emphasised here because it means a real and well-meant friendship, a step closer to becoming a family member one day rather than a mere political (or strategical) ally. Well, family implies that there are less differences, that one is almost alike. There are many European tenets as well as traditional views which hinder an honest dialogue since Europe has yet to rid itself of some of its dangerous ideas ("maleficent" fictions) which set the world ablaze in the 20th century. Neither Nigeria is honestly acknowledged, nor is (in the minds of many a European critic) Achebe's writing universal5, nor is Turkey's fourty-year old endeavour to become a full European member acceptable. There is, intellectually, a problem on the part of Europe to accept the idea of equality which Achebe has been persistently trying to point out both in his novels and in his essays (which is the same reason, I think, why Turkey is so hard done by): feeling of superiority. That is why Achebe's books lack the quality of universal European (or Western) books and is only applicable to Nigeria and likewise the reason for Turkey being a second-rate country.

African Women & Feminism. Reflecting on the Politics of Sisterhood
Free Download African Women & Feminism. Reflecting on the Politics of Sisterhood By Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí (ed.)
2004 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 0865436282 | PDF | 105 MB
The relationship between African women and feminism is a contentious one. Embedded in this connection is the question of whether sisterhood-a mantra assuming a common oppression of all women and signifying feminist international/cross-cultural relations-describes the symbolic and functional representation of African women. The contributors in this book are aware of the global discourse on women as articulated by Western feminists and interrogate the issues raised by the misinterpretation of African women of both black and white American feminists. The implications of the dominance of Western men and women in the production of knowledge about Africa are also explored. This is one of the first collections written by African women who were born and raised in Africa and are now teaching in the United States. The papers here focus on a variety of issues including the uses and abuses of female circumcision in global feminist discourse, the problem of the criminalization approach to eradicating female circumcision, the effect of the image of the victimized African woman on development policy, and gender imperialism as a metascript of domination and oppression and as encountered by African women in the academy. This volume also raises profound questions about the idea that a common anatomy can form the basis of sororal solidarity among women of different colors, cultures, classes, nations, and religions.About the EditorOYERONKE OYEWUMI is an associate professor of sociology at State University of New York at Stony Brook. Born in Nigeria, she was educated at the University of Ibadan and the University of California at Berkeley. She is the author of The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourse, which won a 1998 Distinguished Book Award of the American Sociological Association and was a finalist for the Herskovitts Prize of the African Studies Association in the same year.
