Baseball on the Prairie How Seven Small–Town Teams Shaped Texas League History
Free Download Scott Hanzelka, "Baseball on the Prairie:: How Seven Small-Town Teams Shaped Texas League History"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1609499352 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 7.4 mb
At the close of the nineteenth century, railroad expansion in Texas at once shrank the state and expanded opportunities, including that of Texas League Baseball. Previously, the major cities monopolized Texas minor-league ball, but with the rails came small-town teams without which the league may have floundered. Sherman, Denison, Paris, Corsicana, Cleburne, Greenville and Temple teams produced some of the Texas League's greatest players and provided unprecedented statewide interest. The 1902 Corsicana Oil Citys was one of the most successful teams of the time, claiming the second-best winning percentage and baseball's most lopsided victory, 51-3 over Texarkana's Casketmakers. In its only year in the league, Cleburne won the league championship and team owner Doak Roberts discovered the great Tris Speaker. Kris Rutherford pieces together the Texas League's early days and the people and towns that made this centuries-old institution possible.

Baseball Injuries Case Studies, by Type, in the Major Leagues
Free Download W. Laurence Coker M.D., "Baseball Injuries: Case Studies, by Type, in the Major Leagues"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0786468688 | EPUB | pages: 304 | 8.1 mb
In baseball, injuries to players fall into two main categories: overuse and traumatic. Over 162 games, repetitive pitching and batting motions and the stress of base running can damage joints, bones, and soft tissues, making overuse injuries the most common. Traumatic injuries like beanings, sliding injuries, and concussions, while less frequent, add to the DL list each year. This work explores the various types of injuries in baseball and provides case studies of individual player injuries to demonstrate the cause of injuries, the different treatment options, and the effect of injuries on a player's career. Throughout, discussions show the link between injuries and innovations in the game, like the batting helmet and padded outfield walls, and innovations in medicine, such as Tommy John surgery.

Author: Kevin Baker
Narrator: L.J. Ganser

A hugely entertaining history of baseball in New York City, bursting with bigger than life figures, and long-forgotten heroes, spanning the game's founding to the early 1940s. Baseball is "the New York game" because the city is where the white lines were first drawn, where a bunt was first laid, and where the curve ball was first thrown. It's also where the superstars first emerged, and where social progress in the sport was first made. With nuance and depth, historian Kevin Baker brings this all back to life: the games-World Series in 1905, 1919, 1932; the players-Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig; the coaches and managers-John McGraw, "Foxy Ned" Hanlon, Clark Griffith; and even the writers, reporters, and spectators. The result is a portrait of baseball's most transformative years amidst New York City's evolution from a heaving, stinking, fantastic city to a global capital.

English | 2014 | pages: 128 | ISBN: 1467132284, 1531676871 | EPUB | 71,1 mb
This volume pays homage to the wonderful teams and players from Azusa, La Verne, Claremont, Pomona, Chino, Cucamonga, Ontario, and Upland. A common thread of all these diverse communities was the establishment of baseball teams and, later, softball teams. Baseball played a critical role in advancing civil and political rights, labor reform, gender equality, educational integration, and cultural legitimacy. These remarkable photographs revive the often-overlooked history of Mexican American baseball in the Greater Pomona Valley.
