Social Calls of the Bats of Britain and Ireland
Free Download Neil Middleton, "Social Calls of the Bats of Britain and Ireland"
English | ISBN: 1784273783 | 2022 | 200 pages | EPUB, PDF | 43 MB + 57 MB
The social calls of bats are an area about which relatively little is known, with more research still required to expand our understanding. However, these calls are increasingly recognised as a useful aid to identification: they appear to be species specific and are indicative of behaviour - as in territorial activity of males during the mating season. Because the gathering and interpretation of bat echolocation data are a matter of course during research, conservation and consultancy, it is a logical progression to build momentum behind the consideration of social calls in mainstream bat-related work. A better understanding of this subject could mean that non-intrusive survey methods are developed, ensuring that what is being observed is, as far as possible, purely natural behaviour. In turn this will contribute to better interpretation and more suitable mitigation, compensation and/or enhancement solutions.

Bats and Human Health: Ebola, SARS, Rabies and Beyond covers existing literature on viral, bacterial, protozoan, and fungal infections of bats and how these infections affect bat populations. The book also offers an overview of the potential for zoonotic transmission of infectious diseases from bats to humans or domestic animals. While most prior publications on the subject have dealt only with bat viral infections, this text closely covers a wide range of bat infections, from viral and bacterial infections to protist and fungal infections.

Eleven Bats A Story of Cricket and the SAS
Eleven Bats: A Story of Cricket and the SAS By Harry Moffitt
2021 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 1760877840 | EPUB | 13 MB
Anthony 'Harry' Moffitt spent more than 20 years in the SAS. His decades of service and his multiple tours in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan made him one of the regiment's most experienced and respected figures.Alongside the SAS, Harry's other lifetime love is cricket. An improvised game of backyard cricket was often the circuit-breaker Harry and his team needed after the tension of operations. Recognizing the effect of the game on his fellow soldiers, he began a tradition of organising games and matches wherever he was sent, whether it was in the mountains of East Timor with a fugitive rebel leader, or on the dusty streets of Baghdad, or in exposed Forward Operating Bases in the hills of Afghanistan. Soldiers, locals and even visiting politicians played in these spontaneous yet often bridge-building games. As part of the tradition Harry also started to take a cricket bat with him on operational tours, eleven of them in total across his career. They'd travel with him, often go outside the wire with him, and end up signed by those he met or fought alongside. These eleven bats have formed the basis for Harry's extraordinary memoir. It's a book about combat, and what it takes to serve in one of the world's most elite formations. It's a book about the toll that war takes on soldiers and their loved ones. And it's a book about the healing power of cricket, and how a game can cross boundaries and break down borders even in the most desperate of circumstances.

Urban Bats Biology, Ecology, and Human Dimensions
Urban Bats: Biology, Ecology, and Human Dimensions
English | 2022 | ISBN: 303113172X | 356 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 9.3 MB
The Anthropocene is the "age of human influence", an epoch well known for its urban impact. More than half of all people already live in cities, and this proportion is expected to rise to almost 70 percent by 2050. Like other species in urban areas, bats must contend with the pressures of profound and irreversible land cover change and overcome certain unique challenges, such as the high density of roads, lights, glass, and free-ranging domestic animals. Research on urban bats in recent decades indicates that when it comes to urban life, some bats are synanthropes. In other words, although most species of bats are negatively impacted by urbanisation, many appear to not only succeed, but also thrive in cities and towns. This observation has inspired interesting questions about bats in relation to urbanisation. Which traits and behaviours equip bats for urban success? What features of urban areas increase the likelihood that bats will successfully persist there or even colonize new areas? And how does the success of urban bats affect co-habiting humans?
