The Anthropology of Sport Bodies, Borders, Biopolitics
Free Download The Anthropology of Sport: Bodies, Borders, Biopolitics By Niko Besnier, Susan Brownell, Thomas F. Carter
2017 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 0520289005 | PDF | 4 MB
Few activities bring together physicality, emotions, politics, money, and morality as dramatically as sport. In Brazil's stadiums or China's parks, on Cuba's baseball diamonds or Fiji's rugby fields, human beings test their physical limits, invest emotional energy, bet money, perform witchcraft, and ingest substances. Sport is a microcosm of what life is about. The Anthropology of Sport explores how sport both shapes and is shaped by the social, cultural, political, and historical contexts in which we live. Core themes discussed in this book include the body, modernity, nationalism, the state, citizenship, transnationalism, globalization, and gender and sexuality.

Beyond Syria's Borders A History of Territorial Disputes in the Middle East
Free Download Beyond Syria's Borders: A History of Territorial Disputes in the Middle East By Emma Lundgren Jörum
2015 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 1780767420 | PDF | 2 MB
Lebanon, together with the province of Hatay in Turkey (containing Antakya) and the Golan Heights were all part of French mandate Syria, but are now all outside the boundaries of the modern Syrian state. The policies and reactions of Syria both to the loss of these territories and to the states that have either absorbed, annexed or emerged from them (Lebanon, Turkey and Israel) are the focus of Emma Jørum's book. Jørum uses the differences in policy and discourse when it comes to each of these three cases to highlight the nature of territorial dispute in the region, and the processes of state-building and nationalism more generally. Through the examination of Syria's policies concerning these lost territories, Jørum Descriptions and analyses Syrian-Turkish, Syrian-Lebanese and Syrian-Israeli relations, explaining why some losses have been pushed to one side and others remain at the forefront in Syria's international relations and diplomacy efforts.

Linguistics across Disciplinary Borders The March of Data
Free Download Steven Coats, "Linguistics across Disciplinary Borders: The March of Data "
English | ISBN: 1350362263 | 2024 | 266 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
This volume highlights the ways in which recent developments in corpus linguistics and natural language processing can engage with topics across language studies, humanities and social science disciplines. New approaches have emerged in recent years that blur disciplinary boundaries, facilitated by factors such as the application of computational methods, access to large data sets, and the sharing of code, as well as continual advances in technologies related to data storage, retrieval, and processing. The "march of data" denotes an area at the border region of linguistics, humanities, and social science disciplines, but also the inevitable development of the underlying technologies that drive analysis in these subject areas. Organized into 3 sections, the chapters are connected by the underlying thread of linguistic corpora: how they can be created, how they can shed light on varieties or registers, and how their metadata can be utilized to better understand the internal structure of similar resources. While some chapters in the volume make use of well-established existing corpora, others analyze data from platforms such as YouTube, Twitter or Reddit. The volume provides insight into the diversity of methods, approaches, and corpora that inform our understanding of the "border regions" between the realms of data science, language/linguistics, and social or cultural studies.

Bridges, Borders and Bodies Transgressive Transculturality in Contemporary South Asian Diasporic Women's Novels
Free Download Christine F. Vogt-william, "Bridges, Borders and Bodies: Transgressive Transculturality in Contemporary South Asian Diasporic Women's Novels"
English | ISBN: 144386045X | 2014 | 299 pages | PDF | 1312 KB
South Asian diasporas can be considered transcultural legacies of colonialism, while constituting transcultural forms of postcolonial reality in today's globalised world. The main focus of investigation here is South Asian women's fiction, where diverse forms of identity negotiation undertaken by the protagonists in a number of contemporary novels (from the 1990s to the early 2000s) are read as transgressions. The themes of early gendered experiences of South Asian indentured labour migration, female genealogies and transmissions of cultural heritages down female lines, as well as negotiations of patriarchal violence, are read using a framework culled from postcolonial and feminist criticism. The literary representations of South Asian diasporic female experience in these texts are forms of commentary and critique by contemporary South Asian diasporic women writers. Hence these novels can be viewed as feminist strategies of textual creativity with distinct political aims of presenting transformative narratives addressing the tensions of diaspora and patriarchy. This book is intended to contribute to the current spectrum of academic work being done in diaspora studies, in that it brings together the concepts of diaspora, transculturality, contemporary women's writing and transnational feminist critical approaches to bear on South Asian women's diasporic literature, reflecting a transcultural feminist literary aesthetic. Contrary to the celebratory notion of the concept in much theory, transculturality, as represented in these texts, is fraught with ambivalence.
