Byron's European Impact
Free Download Peter Cochran, "Byron's European Impact"
English | ISBN: 1443875414 | 2015 | 550 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The works of Lord Byron and his friend Sir Walter Scott had an influence on European literature which was immediate and profound. Peter Cochrans book charts that influence on France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and Russia, with individual chapters on Goethe, Pushkin, and Baudelaire and one special chapter on Ibsen, who called Peer Gynt his Manfred. Cochran shows that, although Byrons best work is his satirical writing, which is aimed in part at his earlier romantic material and its readership, his self-correction was not taken on board by many European writers (Pushkin being the exception), and it was the gloomy Byronic Heroes who held sway. These were often read as revolutionaries, but were in fact dead-end. It was a mythical, not a literary Byron whom people thought they had read. The book ends with chapters on three British writers who seem at last to have read Byron, in their different ways, accurately Eliot, Joyce, and Yeats.

Byron, Napoleon, J.C. Hobhouse, and the Hundred Days
Free Download Peter Cochran, "Byron, Napoleon, J.C. Hobhouse, and the Hundred Days"
English | ISBN: 1443877425 | 2015 | 330 pages | PDF | 1437 KB
Napoleon was, after his defeat at Leipzig, granted the island of Elba to rule. He soon found this unsatisfactory, and, early in 1815, left for the south of France, and marched on Paris to some acclamation. He was, all too quickly, defeated at Waterloo. Observing all this was Byrons friend J.C. Hobhouse, an ardent Bonapartist. Byron, who posed as one, never answered his letters from the thick of things in Paris. This book is structured in four layers, and begins with an essay about Byron and Napoleon, which is then followed by Byrons poems about Napoleon and Hobhouses diary. Hobhouses letters conclude the volume. Most of Hobhouses diary has never been published. The book is published, aptly, on the bicentenary of The Hundred Days.

Byron A Life in Ten Letters
Free Download Byron: A Life in Ten Letters
English | 2024 | ISBN: 100920016X | 449 Pages | PDF | 6 MB
Lord Byron was the most celebrated of all the Romantic poets. Troubled, handsome, sexually fluid, disabled, and transgressive, he wrote his way to international fame - and scandal - before finding a kind of redemption in the Greek Revolution. He also left behind the vast trove of thrilling letters (to friends, relatives, lovers, and more) that form the core of this remarkable biography. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Byron's death, and adopting a fresh approach, it explores his life and work through some of his best, most resonant correspondence. Each chapter opens with Byron's own voice - as if we have opened a letter from the poet himself - followed by a vivid account of the emotions and experiences that missive touches. This gripping life traces the meteoric trajectory of a poet whose brilliance shook the world and whose legacy continues to shape art and culture to this day.

Byron's Journal of his Circumnavigation, 1764–1766
Free Download Robert E. Gallagher, "Byron's Journal of his Circumnavigation, 1764-1766"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1409414884 | EPUB | pages: 312 | 4.7 mb
In 1764 the Hon. John Byron was commissioned by the Admiralty to sail to the South Atlantic to search for Pepys's Island and the Southern Continent. He was then to continue into the Pacific itself and look for a possible North-west passage. Although he rediscovered the Falkland Islands, it was after the French had done so under Bougainville, and he made no attempt to search for a North-west passage at all, but sailed straight on round the world, making no discoveries of any importance. The journal which Byron kept during his voyage has been edited and annotated by Dr Gallagher. In his Introduction he describes earlier voyages of a similar nature and sketches the background to this voyage. He assesses Byron's achievement and considers why he disobeyed his orders. Apart from the Journal, the Admiralty's 'secret instructions' to Byron are also printed here, as well as Byron's letter to the Admiralty explaining why he was sailing straight on. There is an appendix by Dr Helen Wallis on the Patagonian giants. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1964.

Byron's Don Juan The Liberal Epic of the Nineteenth Century
Free Download Byron's Don Juan: The Liberal Epic of the Nineteenth Century
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009366238 | 269 Pages | PDF | 2 MB
In this first full-length study of Byron's masterpiece in over thirty years, Richard Cronin boldly presents Don Juan as the epic poem of its age. Impressively illuminating the whole literary nineteenth century through a single work, he asks what kind of epic can be said to represent an era more readily defined by newspapers and magazines than by competitors such as Wordsworth's Excursion or Southey's Joan of Arc arose. Delving into questions of form and choice of hero, he also explores the controversies that informed the poem's reception, its contemporary interactions, and its influence on later nineteenth-century literature. Don Juan, he argues, is the epic poem demanded by an age of cant and dissembling, when people's feelings and the world they lived in had become disconnected. In it, he finds a powerful defence of liberal thinking at a time when that kind of thinking was under threat.

Aspects of Byron's Don Juan
Free Download Peter Cochran, "Aspects of Byron's Don Juan"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 1443847348 | PDF | pages: 531 | 2.0 mb
ASPECTS OF BYRON'S DON JUAN is in part a proceedings volume from the 2012 conference held by the Newstead Byron Society at Nottingham Trent University. Speakers represented in the book include Malcolm Kelsall, Peter Cochran, Diego Saglia and Itsuyo Higashinaka. Topics range from the politics of Don Juan, and its treatment of women, to its comic rhymes. One section is devoted to the poem's importance in the literatures of Spain and Russia, another to the vast catalogue of Byron's prose sources (from cannibalism to cookery books), and a final section to the important role played by Mary Shelley in copying most of the poem for the printer. The editor's introduction describes the enormous literary tradition of which Don Juan forms a vital continuation, from Pulci's Morgante Maggiore, via Rabelais, Cervantes, and Montaigne, to the novelists Sterne, Smollett and Fielding, all of whom Byron adored. Another chapter concerns the differing ways in which Don Juan has been treated by other artists, from Tirso de Molina, via E.T.A. Hoffman, to Johnny Depp.
