The Political Economy of Collective Decision–Making Conflicts and Coalitions in the Council of the European Union (2024)
Free Download Tim Veen, "The Political Economy of Collective Decision-Making: Conflicts and Coalitions in the Council of the European Union"
English | 2011 | pages: 217 | ISBN: 3642201733, 3642429017 | PDF | 3,3 mb
The Council of the European Union is the institutional heart of EU policy-making. But 'who gets what, when and how' in the Council? What are the dimensions of political conflict, and which countries form coalitions in the intense negotiations to achieve their desired policy outcomes? Focussing on collective decision-making in the Council between 1998 and 2007, this book provides a comprehensive account of these salient issues that lie at the heart of political accountability and legitimacy in the European Union. Based on a novel and unique dataset of estimates of government policy positions, salience and power in influencing deliberations, an explanatory model approximating the Nash-Bargaining solution is employed to predict the policy outcomes on ten policy domains of central importance to this institution. The book's analyses comprise investigations into the determinants of decision-making success, the architecture of the political space and the governments' coalition behavior.

The Fantasy Economy Neoliberalism, Inequality, and the Education Reform Movement
Free Download The Fantasy Economy: Neoliberalism, Inequality, and the Education Reform Movement by Neil Kraus
English | October 6, 2023 | ISBN: 1439923701, 143992371X | True EPUB/PDF | 291 pages | 3.3/2 MB
Wage stagnation, growing inequality, and even poverty itself have resulted from decades of neoliberal decision making, not the education system, writes Neil Kraus in his urgent call to action, The Fantasy Economy. Kraus claims the idea that both the education system and labor force are chronically deficient was aggressively and incorrectly promoted starting in the Reagan era, when corporate interests and education reformers emphasized education as the exclusive mechanism providing the citizenry with economic opportunity. However, as this critical book reveals, that is a misleading articulation of the economy and education system rooted in the economic self-interests of corporations and the wealthy.

Nation's Metropolis describes how the national capital region functions as a metropolitan political economy. Its authors distinguish aspects of the Washington region that reflect its characteristics as a national capital from those common to most other metropolitan regions and to other capitals. To do so, they employ an interdisciplinary approach that draws from economics, political science, sociology, geography, and history.

Free Download Colin C. Williams, "Measuring the Global Shadow Economy: The Prevalence of Informal Work and Labour"
English | ISBN: 1784717983 | 2016 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book brings together two leading researchers in the field to provide a comprehensive overview of the shadow economy from a global perspective. Reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of different ways of measuring the informal sector, the authors evaluate its size and key determinants across the world. Williams and Schneider clearly establish the persistence and prevalence of the shadow economy, analysing the narrowness of existing policy approaches and explaining how these fail to address the key factors for its existence and may even exacerbate the problem.

Ethical Dimensions of the Economy Making Use of Hegel and the Concepts of Public and Merit Goods (2024)
Free Download Wilfried Ver Eecke, "Ethical Dimensions of the Economy: Making Use of Hegel and the Concepts of Public and Merit Goods"
English | 2008 | pages: 302 | ISBN: 3540771107, 3642095852 | PDF | 3,1 mb
Overview This book is a philosophical reflection (using mainly Hegel, in addition to 1 Adam Smith, Kant, Marx and Catholic Social Thought) about the soc- political dimension of economics. In it I both agree and disagree with the slogan that "the least government is the best government. " I agree with the slogan, in particular as it applies to the economic domain. Adam Smith taught us that rational and self-interested individuals, left by themselves, create a more efficient and reliable economic system than one in which the government has a heavy role as was the case in his time with the merc- tile system (Smith, 14, 651). Ludwig von Mises demonstrated the same idea for the communist command economy (Hayek 1935, 87-130). I d- agree with the above mentioned slogan if it is interpreted as suggesting that we can best forget about the role of the government for a good functioning economy. Instead, I will argue that the government has an important fu- tion in creating the proper regulations and the wise institutional arran- ments which will allow the economy to flourish in a more efficient, fair and humane way. This book is interdisciplinary in nature. It is a philosophical and ethical reflection on economics. Hence, I make use of philosophical ideas, often but not exclusively those of Hegel. I reflect philosophically on economic concepts.

Three Continents Political Economy and Development of Democracy in Europe, the United States and Latin America
Free Download Luca Meldolesi, "Three Continents: Political Economy and Development of Democracy in Europe, the United States and Latin America "
English | ISBN: 1433192500 | 2022 | 230 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1022 KB + 10 MB
With an astonishing unity of inspiration that serves as a counterbalance to the richness and variety of his themes and positions, Albert O. Hirschman, great political economist of our time, introduces us to the study of Western Europe, the United States and Latin America. From his own memories of the fascist period retold on the occasion of his honorary degree to two previously unpublished writings on the origins of European integration, from a group of illuminating essays on the contemporary economic and political realities of developed Western countries to a selection of texts on South America containing the provisional balance sheet of long experience, this is an intellectual lesson in the truest sense. Through his original way of penetrating the realities of our time, the author unveils a series of concrete issues and new and unlikely ways forward, constructing a tenacious and possibilist scientific pathway aimed at the unstinting encouragement of mutual understanding, economic and civic growth, and the democratic development of three continents.

The Political Economy of Fortune and Misfortune Prospects for Prosperity in Our Times
Free Download Scott Timcke, "The Political Economy of Fortune and Misfortune: Prospects for Prosperity in Our Times"
English | ISBN: 1529221757 | 2023 | 180 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Luck greatly influences a person's quality of life. Yet little of our politics looks at how institutions can amplify good or bad luck that widens social inequality. But societies can change their fortune. Too often debates about inequality focus on the accuracy of data or modelling while missing the greater point about ethics and exploitation. In the wake of growing disparity between the 1% and other classes, this book combines philosophical insights with social theory to offer a much-needed political economy of life chances. Timcke advances new thought on the role luck plays in redistributive justice in 21st century capitalism.
