Aging with HIV in Sub–Saharan Africa Health and Psychosocial Perspectives
Free Download Mark Brennan-Ing, "Aging with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa: Health and Psychosocial Perspectives"
English | ISBN: 3030963675 | 2022 | 235 pages | PDF | 3 MB
With the development of effective antiretroviral therapies (ART) in the mid-1990s, HIV became a treatable although serious condition, and people who are adherent to HIV medications can attain normal or near-normal life expectancies. Because of the success of ART, people 50 and older now make up a majority of people with HIV in high-income countries and other places where ART is accessible. The aging of the HIV epidemic is a global trend that is also being observed in low- and middle-income countries, including countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where the greatest number of older people with HIV reside (3.7 million). While globally over half of older adults with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa, we have little information about the circumstances, needs, and resiliencies of this population, which limits our ability to craft effective policy and programmatic responses to aging with HIV in this region. At present, our understanding of HIV and aging is dominated by information from the U.S. and Western Europe, where the epidemiology of HIV and the infrastructure to provide social care are markedly different than in sub-Saharan Africa.

Positive Images Gay Men and HIV AIDS in the Culture of 'Post Crisis'
Dion Kagan, "Positive Images: Gay Men and HIV/AIDS in the Culture of 'Post Crisis'"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1784534196, 1350259993 | PDF | pages: 316 | 24.4 mb
A tidal wave of panic surrounded homosexuality and AIDS in the 1980s and early '90s, the period commonly called 'The AIDS Crisis'. With the advent of antiretroviral drugs in the mid '90s, however, the meaning of an HIV diagnosis radically changed. These game-changing drugs now enable many people living with HIV to lead a healthy, regular life, but how has this dramatic shift impacted the representation of gay men and HIV in popular culture? Positive Images is the first detailed examination of how the relationship between gay men and HIV has transformed in the past two decades. From Queer as Folk to Chemsex, The Line of Beauty to The Normal Heart, Dion Kagan examines literature, film, TV, documentaries and news coverage from across the English-speaking world to unearth the socio-cultural foundations underpinning this 'post-crisis' period. His analyses provide acute insights into the fraught legacies of the AIDS Crisis and its continued presence in the modern queer consciousness.

Prescribing HIV Prevention Bringing Culture into Global Health Communication
Prescribing HIV Prevention: Bringing Culture into Global Health Communication By Nicola Bulled
2014 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 1611323622 | PDF | 3 MB
Critical health communication scholars point out that the acceptance of HIV risk prevention methods are bound inside inequitable structures of power and knowledge. Nicola Bulled's in-depth ethnographic account of how these messages are selected, transmitted and reacted to by young adults in the AIDS-torn population of Lesotho in southern Africa provides a crucial example of the importance of a culture-centered approach to health communication. She shows the clash between traditional western perceptions of how increased knowledge will increase compliance with western ideas of prevention, and mixed messages offered by local religious, educational, and media institutions. Bulled also demonstrates how structural and geographical forces prevent the delivery and acceptance of health messages, and how local communities shape their own knowledge of health, disease and illness. This volume will be of interest to medical anthropologists and sociologists, to those in health communication, and to researchers working on issues related to HIV.

HIV Protocols
HIV Protocols By James R. Lane (auth.), Nelson L. Michael MD, PhD, Jerome H. Kim MD (eds.)
1999 | 401 Pages | ISBN: 0896033694 | PDF | 30 MB
In HIV Protocols, Nelson Michael and Jerome Kim have organized a collection of cutting-edge techniques essential for studying the molecular biology, virology, and immunology of the HIV virus. The methods cover a broad range of research interests, including quantitation of viral genomes, HIV promoter function, B-cell epitope mapping, viral coreceptor usage, and measurements of T-cell function. Special emphasis is accorded to the study of those viral and host immune responses to infection that will be critical to the design of effective preventive vaccines. HIV Protocols is the first HIV methods book to concentrate equally on virology, molecular biology, and immunology, as well as to incorporate methods on chemokine receptor structure and function. Comprehensive and state-of-the-art, the techniques detailed here provide an indispensable framework for unraveling the molecular and immunological aspects of HIV infection.

Thinking Politically about HIV
Kent Buse, "Thinking Politically about HIV"
English | ISBN: 0415825547 | 2013 | 150 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
AIDS has a unique political history. As fears grew of a global pandemic on the scale of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS was briefly treated as an issue of high politics in the international arena and generated significant resources for country programmes. That initial commitment is now declining, and if AIDS is to maintain its visibility and contribution to global solidarity, human rights and dignity, its politics will have to evolve to reflect the profound geo-political, economic and social transformations underway today.
