Turning Point End of the Growth Paradigm
Free Download Robert Ayres, "Turning Point: End of the Growth Paradigm"
English | 1997 | pages: 288 | ISBN: 1853834394, 0312214537 | EPUB | 2,6 mb
This text discusses the current basis of economic growth, concluding that it is is failing to deliver, and is actually harming our prospects for future security. Further arguments propose a possible long-term strategy for economic revival - eco-restructuring. This strategy involves a shifting away from production of goods to production of services, closing material cycles and eliminating reliance on non-renewable resources.

Solutions of Fixed Point Problems with Computational Errors
Free Download Solutions of Fixed Point Problems with Computational Errors
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031508785 | 395 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 29 MB
The book is devoted to the study of approximate solutions of fixed point problems in the presence of computational errors. It begins with a study of approximate solutions of star-shaped feasibility problems in the presence of perturbations. The goal is to show the convergence of algorithms, which are known as important tools for solving convex feasibility problems and common fixed point problems. The text also presents studies of algorithms based on unions of nonexpansive maps, inconsistent convex feasibility problems, and split common fixed point problems. A number of algorithms are considered for solving convex feasibility problems and common fixed point problems. The book will be of interest for researchers and engineers working in optimization, numerical analysis, and fixed point theory. It also can be useful in preparation courses for graduate students. The main feature of the book which appeals specifically to this audience is the study of the influence of computational errorsfor several important algorithms used for nonconvex feasibility problems.

Cultural Memories The Geographical Point of View (2024)
Free Download Peter Meusburger, Michael Heffernan, Edgar Wunder, "Cultural Memories: The Geographical Point of View"
English | 2011 | pages: 373 | ISBN: 9048189446, 9400736037 | PDF | 8,6 mb
The revival of interest in collective cultural memories since the 1980s has been a genuinely global phenomenon. Cultural memories can be defined as the social constructions of the past that allow individuals and groups to orient themselves in time and space. The investigation of cultural memories has necessitated an interdisciplinary perspective, though geographical questions about the spaces, places, and landscapes of memory have acquired a special significance. The essays in this volume, written by leading anthropologists, geographers, historians, and psychologists, open a range of new interpretations of the formation and development of cultural memories from ancient times to the present day. The volume is divided into five interconnected sections. The first section outlines the theoretical considerations that have shaped recent debates about cultural memory. The second section provides detailed case studies of three key themes: the founding myths of the nation-state, the contestation of national collective memories during periods of civil war, and the oral traditions that move beyond national narrative. The third section examines the role of World WarII as a pivotal episode in an emerging European cultural memory. The fourth section focuses on cultural memories in postcolonial contexts beyond Europe. The fifth and final section extends the study of cultural memory back into premodern tribal and nomadic societies.

Locke and the Legislative Point of View Toleration, Contested Principles, and the Law (2024)
Free Download Alex Tuckness, "Locke and the Legislative Point of View: Toleration, Contested Principles, and the Law"
English | 2002 | pages: 224 | ISBN: 0691095043, 0691095035 | EPUB | 1,5 mb
Determining which moral principles should guide political action is a vexing question in political theory. This is especially true when faced with the "toleration paradox": believing that something is morally wrong but also believing that it is wrong to suppress it. In this book, Alex Tuckness argues that John Locke's potential contribution to this debate-what Tuckness terms the "legislative point of view"-has long been obscured by overemphasis on his doctrine of consent. Building on a line of reasoning Locke made explicit in his later writings on religious toleration, Tuckness explores the idea that we should act politically only on those moral principles that a reasonable legislator would endorse; someone, that is, who would avoid enacting measures that could be self-defeating when applied by fallible human beings.

Emotions from a Bilingual Point of View Personality and Emotional Intelligence in Relation to Perception and Expression
Free Download Katarzyna Ozanska-Ponikwia, "Emotions from a Bilingual Point of View: Personality and Emotional Intelligence in Relation to Perception and Expression"
English | ISBN: 1443845329 | 2013 | 185 pages | PDF | 809 KB
This book explores the relationship between immersion in a foreign language and its culture and perception and expression of emotions in both first and a foreign language. It looks at the perception and expression of emotions from different angles including personality traits and emotional intelligence as important variables that might have an influence not only on one's ability to perceive and express emotions in a foreign language but also on self-perceived L2 proficiency in that language. It is the first study, to the best of our knowledge, that investigates such notions as personality, sociocultural competence, emotional intelligence, as well as perception and expression of emotions in the L1 (Polish) and L2 (English), in relation to the immigrant context by using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The book will be of considerable interest to both students and scholars in the fields of second language acquisition, bilingualism, and applied linguistics.
