The 50 years following the assassination of Severus Alexander on March 19, 235 CE has been generally regarded by academics as one of the lowest points in the history of the Roman Empire. This stands in stark contrast to the previous 150 years, which included the reigns of the Five Good Emperors and has been universally praised as one of the high points of the empire. Severus Alexander was the last of the Severan emperors, and the subsequent years of crisis (235-285 CE) were characterized by a series of short reigns, usually ending in the violent death of the reigning emperor. At the same time, this period of time also saw the empire beset by threatening forces on all sides. The Romans faced a newly resurgent Persia in the east, as well as significant forces from German tribes on the Rhine and Goths along the Danube. The various conflicts would result in the unprecedented death of a sitting emperor in battle, which took place in 251 with Emperor Decius, and Emperor Valerian was captured in 260 CE.

Unnecessary Wars
Free Download Henry Reynolds, "Unnecessary Wars"
English | 2016 | pages: 288 | ISBN: 1742234801 | EPUB | 0,8 mb
'Australian governments find it easy to go to war. Their leaders seem to be able to withdraw with a calm conscience, answerable neither to God nor humanity.' Australia lost 600 men in the Boer War, a three-year conflict fought in the heart of Africa that had ostensibly nothing to do with Australia. Coinciding with Federation, the war kickstarted Australia's commitment to fighting in Britain's wars overseas, and forged a national identity around it. By 1902, when the Boer War ended, a mythology about our colonial soldiers had already been crafted, and a dangerous precedent established.

The Wars of the Roses
Free Download The Wars of the Roses By J.R. Lander
2009 | 276 Pages | ISBN: 0750946121 | EPUB | 1 MB
The dynastic struggles of the Wars of the Roses (1455-85) have traditionally been portrayed as belonging to one of the most dramatic periods in the history of England, an age of murder and melodrama. In this classic history of the wars, charting their origins, progress, conclusions and effects, Professor Lander sets the record straight. By putting the wars into their contemporary context, using the written records of the time (many of which are reproduced in the text) and the results of modern research and scholarship, the true picture emerges. The wars were, in fact, very limited. While not denying that contemporary English society was disorderly and violent, Lander suggests that this state of affairs was due far less to civil war than to habits of violence among all classes of society. Fluently and clearly written "The Wars of the Roses" is the perfect overview of one of the most famous of medieval conflicts. Shedding light, as it does, on fifteenth-century history as a whole, the roots of the Tudor dynasty, and the background to Shakespeare's history plays, this book deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in this most turbulent period.

The Civil Wars of Julia Ward Howe
Free Download The Civil Wars of Julia Ward Howe By Elaine Showalter
2017 | 328 Pages | ISBN: 1451645910 | EPUB | 53 MB
This "lively biography" (The New Yorker) is the first to tell the story of Julia Ward Howe as a powerful feminist pioneer.Julia Ward (1819-1910) was an heiress who married a handsome accomplished doctor who worked with the blind and deaf. But Samuel Howe wasted her inheritance, mistreated and belittled her, and tried to stifle her intellect and freedom. Nevertheless Julia persisted and wrote poetry and a mildly shocking sexual novel that was published to good reviews. She also wrote the words to probably the most famous anthem in the country's history-the Civil War anthem, "Battle Hymn of the Republic."After Samuel died when she was fifty-one, Julia lived another forty years as a dynamic, tireless, and successful activist for women's rights, pacifism, and social reform. She became a groundbreaking figure in the abolitionist and suffrage movements, and a successful author and lecturer who fought her own battle for creative freedom and independence. In the "riveting" (The New York Times Book Review), "unfailingly vivid" (The Atlantic) and "invigorating" (O, The Oprah Magazine)The Civil Wars of Julia Ward Howe, esteemed author Elaine Showalter tells the story of Howe's determined self-creation and brings to life the society she inhabited and the obstacles she overcame. The Civil War challenged nineteenth-century ideas of separate spheres for men and women. In Howe's case, this transformation led to a rebellion against her marriage. She fought a second Civil War at home and discovered ways to combine domestic chores with creativity and politics, and she helped establish Mother's Day to honor women and to recruit them to her causes. "A biography with the verve and pace of a delicious novel...Showalter reveals the entwining of Howe's public and private lives, as she righteously battled her husband and society, and finally saw the glory she always believed she deserved" (The Boston Globe).

A Companion & Guide to the Wars of the Roses
Free Download A Companion & Guide to the Wars of the Roses by Peter Bramley
English | October 1, 2011 | ISBN: 0752463365 | 288 pages | PDF | 10 Mb
The Wars of the Roses (1455-85) saw the end of Plantagenet rule in England and Wales, and the accession of the Tudor dynasty to the throne. It is sometimes seen as the end of the Middle Ages in England, and the start of the modern era, and it paved the way for the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. A surprising number of historic sites from this turbulent period survive: battlefields, castles, churches, monasteries. Peter Bramley's beautifully illustrated field guide and companion to the Wars of the Roses gives full details of both the events and the personalities associated with each of these sites, together with the historical background and the reasons for the struggle between the houses of York and Lancaster. Arranged by region, it covers the whole of England and Wales, and provides invaluable information for anyone visiting or planning to visit any of the sites connected with the conflict, as well as anyone interested in the history of this period in general.

Nixon's White House Wars The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever
Free Download Nixon's White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever By Patrick J. Buchanan
2018 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 1101902868 | EPUB | 4 MB
From Vietnam to the Southern Strategy, from the opening of China to the scandal of Watergate, Pat Buchanan--speechwriter and senior adviser to President Nixon--tells the untold story of Nixon's embattled White House, from its historic wins to it devastating defeats. In his inaugural address, Nixon held out a hand in friendship to Republicans and Democrats alike. But by the fall of 1969, massive demonstrations in Washington and around the country had been mounted to break his presidency. In a brilliant appeal to what he called the "Great Silent Majority," Nixon sent his enemies reeling. Vice President Agnew followed by attacking the blatant bias of the media in a fiery speech authored and advocated by Buchanan. And by 1970, Nixon's approval rating soared to 68 percent, and he was labeled "The Most Admired Man in America."Them one by one, the crises came, from the invasion of Cambodia, to the protests that killed four students at Kent State, to race riots and court ordered school busing.Buchanan chronicles Nixon's historic trip to China, and describes the White House strategy that brought about Nixon's 49-state landslide victory over George McGovern in 1972.When the Watergate scandal broke, Buchanan urged the president to destroy the Nixon tapes before they were subpoenaed, and fire Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, as Nixon ultimately did in the "Saturday Night Massacre." After testifying before the Watergate Committee himself, Buchanan describes the grim scene at Camp David in August 1974, when Nixon's staff concluded he could not survive In a riveting memoir from behind the scenes of the most controversial presidency of the last century, Nixon's White House Wars reveals both the failings and achievements of the 37th President, recorded by one of those closest to Nixon from before his political comeback, through to his final days in office.

History Wars and the Classroom Global Perspectives (Hc) (Studies in the History of Education
Free Download Tony Taylor, "History Wars and the Classroom: Global Perspectives (Hc) (Studies in the History of Education "
English | ISBN: 1617355275 | 2011 | 228 pages | PDF | 2 MB
ABOUT THE BOOK The book is entitled History Wars and the Classroom: Global Perspectives and examines how ten separate countries have experienced debates and disputes over the contested nature of the subject, for example the 'Black Armband' and 'Whitewash' factions in Australia who adopt opposingly celebratory or denigratory views of Australian history, especially when evaluating episodes of poor racial relations. There are also tensions between traditional/patriotic views of history teaching and reformed or 'new' history. There are issues of political control of the curriculum and parallel issues of who writes it (very topical in England at the moment over two expat 'big picture' historians who work at Harvard and Columbia (Niall Ferguson and Simon Schama)). ENDORSEMENTS: "An important collection for anyone seeking to understand the incendiary nature of the history curriculum across the globe." Sam Wineburg, Margaret Jacks Professor of Education and History, Stanford University, USA. "A powerfully and impressively wide-ranging collection of essays, which vividly remind us that the debates on the teaching of history are global rather than merely national".
