Spacecraft Systems Engineering
Spacecraft Systems Engineering By Peter Fortescue, John Stark, Graham Swinerd
2003 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 0470851023 | PDF | 17 MB
Following on from the hugely successful previous editions, the third edition of Spacecraft Systems Engineering incorporates the most recent technological advances in spacecraft and satellite engineering. With emphasis on recent developments in space activities, this new edition has been completely revised. Every chapter has been updated and rewritten by an expert engineer in the field, with emphasis on the bus rather than the payload. Encompassing the fundamentals of spacecraft engineering, the book begins with front-end system-level issues, such as environment, mission analysis and system engineering, and progresses to a detailed examination of subsystem elements which represent the core of spacecraft design - mechanical, electrical, propulsion, thermal, control etc. This quantitative treatment is supplemented by an appreciation of the interactions between the elements, which deeply influence the process of spacecraft systems design. In particular the revised text includes A new chapter on small satellites engineering and applications which has been contributed by two internationally-recognised experts, with insights into small satellite systems engineering. Additions to the mission analysis chapter, treating issues of aero-manouevring, constellation design and small body missions. In summary, this is an outstanding textbook for aerospace engineering and design students, and offers essential reading for spacecraft engineers, designers and research scientists. The comprehensive approach provides an invaluable resource to spacecraft manufacturers and agencies across the world.

Slaves to Racism An Unbroken Chain From America to Liberia
Slaves to Racism: An Unbroken Chain From America to Liberia By Benjamin G. Dennis, Anita K. Dennis
2008 | 265 Pages | ISBN: 0875866573 | PDF | 2 MB
Slaves to Racism is a historical eyewitness account of the effect of racism in two countries, one black, one white, showing how American racism traps blacks even in Africa. The tales he tells illustrate the twists of irony and misplaced pride on all sides. Prof. Dennis chronicles the compulsive and repetitious nature of racism and its destructive effects on peoples and societies. During the 1990s, Liberia descended into civil war and anarchy. African-Liberian rebel groups roamed the countryside randomly killing as they vied for power. Doe was killed by a segment of these rebel groups and warlord Charles Taylor eventually became president in 1997. In 2003, Taylor was deposed by rebel groups and is now on trial at The Hague for war crimes. Despite Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's democratic election in 2005, Liberia remains in ruins as a classic failed state in Africa. The obvious question is: Why did the Negro experiment planted in Africa in 1822 fail so miserably? Liberia was doomed from the start. The sins of the master were inevitably passed on to the freed slaves who returned to Africa to ''make a fresh start.'' To assert status the Americo-Liberians blindly followed the worst habits of the whites, imposing themselves as a superior class on the ''African Liberians'' who had never left. With only a superficial knowledge of Western culture, they imagined the white way without truly understanding it, and made Liberia a caricature of Southern society. Prof. Dennis compares the prejudice and discrimination between groups in Liberia with the patterns he has encountered between and among blacks and whites in the United States, from blatant bigotry to the almost subliminal boundaries that still exist even among liberal communities that ''want more blacks.''

Risk, Crisis and Security Management
Risk, Crisis and Security Management By Edward Borodzicz
2005 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 0470867043 | PDF | 6 MB
This book has two aims. First, to consider how risk, crisis and security, may be linked in an organisational context. Second, to review the role of, simulation and gaming in responding to these phenomena. Historically, risk has been an established concept of academic interest for some time in both the pure and social sciences. Risk however, remains a subject of intense social and political controversy. How we manage risk appears to dominate every debate from providing social services such as health, transport and public safety to the regulation of corporate activity. Debates about the theory and practice of security management are less developed. This book will inform the debate by considering the relationships between risk and security. Includes case studies such as the Kings Cross underground disaster, September 11, Hong Kong race track fire, Arthur Anderson and London ambulance computer failure

OSPF Anatomy of an Internet Routing Protocol
OSPF: Anatomy of an Internet Routing Protocol By John T. Moy
1998 | 331 Pages | ISBN: 0201634724 | PDF | 6 MB
Written for TCP/IP network administrators, protocol designers, and network application developers, this book gives the most complete and practical view ever into the inner workings of Internet routing. The book focuses on OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), a common TCP/IP routing protocol that provides robust and efficient routing support in the most demanding Internet environments. A methodical and detailed description of the protocol is offered and OSPF's role within the wider context of a TCP/IP network is demonstrated. Practical throughout, the book provides not only a theoretical description of Internet routing, but also a real-world look into how theory translates into practice. It shows how algorithms are implemented, and how the routing protocols function in a working network where transmission lines and routers routinely break down. You will find clear explanations of such routing fundamentals as how a router forwards packets, IP addressing, CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing), the routing table, Internet routing architecture, and the two main routing technologies: Distance Vector and link-state algorithms. OSPF is discussed in depth, with an examination of the rationale behind OSPF's design decisions and how it has evolved to keep pace with the rapidly changing Internet environment. OSPF topics covered by the book include the following: OSPF areas and virtual links NBMA (Nonbroadcast multi-access) and Point-to-MultiPoint network segments OSPF configuration and management Interaction with other routing protocols OSPF cryptographic authentication OSPF protocol extensions, including the Demand Circuit extensions and the multicast extensions to OSPF (MOSPF) An OSPF FAQ IP multicast and multicast routing are also discussed. Methods for debugging routing problems are explained, including a catalog of available debugging tools. The book also offers side-by-side comparisons of all the unicast and multicast routing protocols currently in use in the Internet. You will come away from this book with a sophisticated understanding of Internet routing and of the OSPF protocol in particular. Moreover, the book's practical focus will enable you to put this deeper understanding to work in your network environment.

Introductory Nuclear Physics
Introductory Nuclear Physics By Samuel S. M. Wong
1998 | 475 Pages | ISBN: 0471239739 | PDF | 24 MB
A comprehensive, unified treatment of present-day nuclear physics-the fresh edition of a classic text/reference. ''A fine and thoroughly up-to-date textbook on nuclear physics . . . most welcome.'' -Physics Today (on the First Edition). What sets Introductory Nuclear Physics apart from other books on the subject is its presentation of nuclear physics as an integral part of modern physics. Placing the discipline within a broad historical and scientific context, it makes important connections to other fields such as elementary particle physics and astrophysics. Now fully revised and updated, this Second Edition explores the changing directions in nuclear physics, emphasizing new developments and current research-from superdeformation to quark-gluon plasma. Author Samuel S.M. Wong preserves those areas that established the First Edition as a standard text in university physics departments, focusing on what is exciting about the discipline and providing a concise, thorough, and accessible treatment of the fundamental aspects of nuclear properties. In this new edition, Professor Wong: * Includes a chapter on heavy-ion reactions-from high-spin states to quark-gluon plasma * Adds a new chapter on nuclear astrophysics * Relates observed nuclear properties to the underlying nuclear interaction and the symmetry principles governing subatomic particles * Regroups material and appendices to make the text easier to use * Lists Internet links to essential databases and research projects * Features end-of-chapter exercises using real-world data. Introductory Nuclear Physics, Second Edition is an ideal text for courses in nuclear physics at the senior undergraduate or first-year graduate level. It is also an important resource for scientists and engineers working with nuclei, for astrophysicists and particle physicists, and for anyone wishing to learn more about trends in the field.
