The Translation and Translator of the Peshitta of Hosea
Eric Tully, "The Translation and Translator of the Peshitta of Hosea"
English, Hebrew, Syriac | 2015 | ISBN: 9004288309 | PDF | pages: 381 | 1.6 mb
In The Translation and the Translator of the Peshitta of Hosea, Eric J. Tully offers the first study of the Peshitta conducted via insights and methods from the discipline of Translation Studies. Every translator leaves residue of his or her interference in the course of the translation process. This investigation analyzes that interference (seen in the form of translation shifts), categorizes it, and draws conclusions with implications for textual criticism, Translation Studies, historical reconstruction, and the history of interpretation. Eric Tully argues that the Peshitta was translated from a Hebrew text similar to the Masoretic Text (but not identical to it) and was also influenced by readings from the Greek Septuagint. The study concludes with a socio-historical profile of the translator. Just as an ancient person makes one kind of ceramic jug or bronze incense stand and not another, the translation is a literary artifact in which the translator has crafted a text that reflects his or her own values and technique.

The Making of the Classical Theory of Economic Growth
Anthony Brewer, "The Making of the Classical Theory of Economic Growth"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0415746086 | PDF | pages: 220 | 1.1 mb
This book collects together for the first time Anthony Brewer's work on the origins and development of the theory of economic growth from its eighteenth-century beginnings to its dominance in economic thinking in the nineteenth century. The key to the origins of the theory is that writers before Turgot and Smith, though they laid the foundations for later work, had no concept of continuing growth.

The Halberd at Red Cliff Jian'an and the Three Kingdoms
Xiaofei Tian, "The Halberd at Red Cliff: Jian'an and the Three Kingdoms"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0674977033 | PDF | pages: 465 | 11.6 mb
The turn of the third century CE―known as the Jian'an era or Three Kingdoms period―holds double significance for the Chinese cultural tradition. Its writings laid the foundation of classical poetry and literary criticism. Its historical personages and events have also inspired works of poetry, fiction, drama, film, and art throughout Chinese history, including Internet fantasy literature today. There is a vast body of secondary literature on these two subjects individually, but very little on their interface.

The Faculties of the Human Mind and the Case of Moral Feeling in Kants Philosophy
Antonino Falduto, "The Faculties of the Human Mind and the Case of Moral Feeling in Kants Philosophy"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 3110350025 | PDF | pages: 285 | 2.3 mb
This work shows the inconsistencies between the psychological and anthropological ways of interpreting Kant's pure philosophy. It is argued that Kant's philosophy can be understood only in the context of his theory of the faculties, including their purely formal and rational use. Against this background, Kant's concept of moral feeling is clarified in the context of his cognitivist moral theory.

The Encyclopedia of world history ancient, medieval, and modern, chronologically arranged
The Encyclopedia of world history: ancient, medieval, and modern, chronologically arranged By Peter N. Stearns
2001 | 3540 Pages | ISBN: 0395652375 | PDF | 9 MB
For decades William L. Langer's best-selling ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD HISTORY was the indispensable, authoritative guide to all of human history. Now, under the direction of a distinguished new editor, comes an updated and dramatically improved version for a new generation, the only encyclopedia of its kind with a bound-in, searchable compact disc of the complete text. The result is a wholly accessible, absorbing canvas of world history that no student, scholar, or amateur historian should be without. Renowned historian Peter N. Stearns and thirty prominent historians have combined their expertise over the past ten years to perfect this comprehensive chronology of more than 20,000 entries that span the millennia from prehistoric times to the year 2000. With a unique format that has won it generations of fans, the ENCYCLOPEDIA continues to feature chronological entries grouped by geographic region, allowing readers to get an in-depth view of distinct events along with a virtual time line of human history. But this new edition is much more than an expansion of a classic; it reflects important recent changes in historical trends and historical thinking. In addition to showcasing traditional facts of national leadership and state power, the Encyclopedia embraces social and cultural developments, non-European history, women's history, religion, health, economics, technology, and other vital but less often reported aspects of the human drama. Here is a chronicle not only of major political events but of ordinary people, covering shifts in the relationships between men and women, developments in leisure, and demographic currents. And for all periods there are summaries of global developments that cannot be captured in national or regional frameworks. As editor Stearns notes in his preface, ''The world we know historically has greatly changed. The revisions that animate this edition celebrate this change, benefiting from the labors of countless venturesome scholars over the past several decades.'' A masterwork whose roots date back to the nineteenth century, this exciting volume belongs at the elbow of every history lover and of anyone who has ever been curious about our constantly changing, remarkably diverse human story.
