Plato The Symposium (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)
Frisbee C. C. Sheffield, M. C. Howatson, "Plato: The Symposium (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0521682983 | 132 pages | PDF | 0.6 MB
Plato's Symposium, written in the early part of the 4th century BC, is set at a drinking party (symposium) attended by some of the leading intellectuals of the day, including Aristophanes, the comic dramatist, Socrates, Plato's mentor, and Alcibiades, the brilliant but (eventually) treacherous politician. Each guest gives a speech in praise of the benefits of desire and its role in the good and happy human life. At the core of the work stands Socrates' praise of philosophical desire, and an argument for the superiority of the philosophical life as the best route to happiness. This edition provides an accessible and engaging new translation by M. C. Howatson, and a substantial introduction, by Frisbee C. C. Sheffield, which guides the reader through the various parts of the dialogue and reflects on its central arguments. A chronology and detailed notes on the participants help to set this enduring work in context.

Plato Laches, Protagoras, Meno, Euthydemus
Plato, W. R. M. Lamb, "Plato: Laches, Protagoras, Meno, Euthydemus"
English, Greek | 1977 | ISBN: 0674991834 | 508 pages | PDF (scan) | 15.68 MB
Plato, the great philosopher of Athens, was born in 427 BCE. In early manhood an admirer of Socrates, he later founded the famous school of philosophy in the grove Academus. Much else recorded of his life is uncertain; that he left Athens for a time after Socrates' execution is probable; that later he went to Cyrene, Egypt, and Sicily is possible; that he was wealthy is likely; that he was critical of 'advanced' democracy is obvious. He lived to be 80 years old. Linguistic tests including those of computer science still try to establish the order of his extant philosophical dialogues, written in splendid prose and revealing Socrates' mind fused with Plato's thought.

Planning for Resilience New Paths for Managing Uncertainty
Elena Pede, "Planning for Resilience: New Paths for Managing Uncertainty"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 3030172619 | PDF | pages: 95 | 1.8 mb
Given the increasing uncertainty due to catastrophic climate events, terrorist attacks, and economic crises, this book addresses planning for resilience by focusing on sharing knowledge among policy-makers, urban planners, emergency teams and citizens. Chapters look at the nature of contemporary risks, the widespread of resilience thinking and the gap between the theoretical conception and the practices. The book explores how resilience implies a change in planning practices, highlighting the need for flexibility in terms of procedures, and for dynamism in the knowledge systems and learning processes that are the main tools for interaction among different actors and scales. Given its breadth of coverage, the book offers a valuable resource for both academic readers (spatial planners, geographers, social scientists) and practitioners (policymakers, citizens' associations).

Pile Design and Construction Practice
Pile Design and Construction Practice By M. J Tomlinson, John Woodward
2007 | 566 Pages | ISBN: 0415385822 | PDF | 12 MB
This international handbook is essential for geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists responsible for designing and constructing piled foundations. It explains general principles and practice and details current types of pile, piling equipment and methods. It includes calculations of the resistance of piles to compressive loads, pile groups under compressive loading, piled foundations for resisting uplift and lateral loading and the structural design of piles and pile groups. Marine structures, miscellaneous problems (including machinery foundations, underpinning, mining subsidence areas, contracts and frozen ground), durability of piled foundations, ground investigations, and pile testing are also covered. It introduces the 2005 version of Eurocode7, BS 8004 and other codes, and refers to BS 6349 on maritime structures, and new forms of civil engineering contracts suitable for piling projects. It includes numerous worked examples to the codes, many based on actual problems. It also gives very comprehensive information for students.

Physics An Illustrated Guide to Science
Physics: An Illustrated Guide to Science By Diagram Group
2006 | 209 Pages | ISBN: 081606167X | PDF | 9 MB
Physics: An Illustrated Guide to Science is one of eight volumes of ''Facts On File's'' new ''Science Visual Resources'' set. Containing five sections, a comprehensive glossary, a Web site guide, and an index, ''Biology'' is an ideal learning tool for students and teachers of science. Full-color diagrams, graphs, charts, and maps on every page illustrate the essential elements of the subject, while parallel text provides key definitions and step-by-step explanations. The five sections include: ''Forces'' - provides an overview of Newton's laws of motion and gravity. It also describes the physics of simple machines and explains the distinction between the concepts of heat and work; ''Energy'' - examines the concept of energy in more detail. This section covers thermal conduction, radiation, and convection, as well as describes changes in energy type. The industrial production of energy as well as possible sources of renewable energy are also described here; ''Waves, Sound, and Light'' - is concerned with the wave motion of light and sound energy. The principles of superposition, interference, diffraction, polarization, and reflection are covered in this section. There is also a survey of lenses and optical instruments; and ''Electricity'' - details the basic concepts of electrical energy and magnetism. Subjects covered in this section include induction, electrostatics, electric current, electromotive force, electrolysis, transformers, and electric motors. It also includes: ''Electronics'' - is an overview of the practical issues involved in the design of devices that control the flow of electrons or other charged particles. It includes a comprehensive guide to circuit symbols, a look at microprocessors, and a thorough grounding in circuit logic.

Physical Geography Lab Manual
Karen Lemke, "Physical Geography Lab Manual"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0077276035 | PDF | pages: 312 | 12.4 mb
Lemke et al: Physical Geography Laboratory Manual is a comprehensive introductory manual for students without a previous science background. An abundant set of 21 exercises assures that every professor will find a complete set of preferred labs for a semester-long course. Lemke/Ritter/Heywood wrote this lab manual in order to provide equal coverage of the four spheres of the environment-the atmosphere biosphere hydrosphere and lithosphere. The lab manual was written independent of any specific textbook and will work with available physical geography texts.

Photoassociation of Ultracold CsYb Molecules and Determination of Interspecies Scattering Lengths
Alexander Guttridge, "Photoassociation of Ultracold CsYb Molecules and Determination of Interspecies Scattering Lengths"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 3030212009 | PDF | pages: 206 | 8.5 mb
This thesis lays the groundwork for producing a new class of ultracold molecule by associating an alkali-metal atom and a closed-shell alkaline-earth-like atom, specifically Cs and Yb. Such molecules exhibit both a magnetic dipole moment and an electric dipole moment in their ground state. This extra degree of freedom opens up new avenues of research including the study of exotic states of matter, the shielding of molecular collisions and the simulation of lattice spin models.
