Smith, Rachel Pain, Susan J. Smith 2008 | 275 Pages | ISBN: 0754649660 | PDF | 2 MB 'Fear' has greater currency in western societies than ever before. Through scares ranging from cot death, juvenile crime, internet porn, asylum seekers, dirty bombs and avian flu, we are bombarded with messages about emerging risks. In response, patterns of living and working are increasingly regulated. This book takes stock of the range of issues of 'fear' which have come to public and academic attention in recent years, and presents new theoretical arguments and new research findings on fear, covering topics as diverse as the war on terror, the immigration crisis, stranger danger, global disease epidemics and sectarian violence. To date, previous social science engagement with fear has taken two largely separate trajectories: fear in everyday life, and political geographies of fear at global and national levels. This book is the first to put forward a conceptual framework which emphasizes the connections between geopolitics and everyday life. It examines the ways in which fear may be manufactured and manipulated for political purposes and becomes a tool of repression, and charts the association of fear discourses with particular spaces, times and sets of geopolitical relations. But it also highlights the importance and sometimes unpredictability of lived experiences of fear - the many ways in which fear is made sense of, managed, resisted and reshaped, as well as the importance of hope and resistance in everyday life. It relates fear closely to political, economic and social marginalisation at different scales, and explores the more complex social identities and relations of which fear becomes a part.
Fatal Treasure: Greed and Death, Emeralds and Gold, and the Obsessive Search for the Legendary Ghost Galleon Atocha By Jedwin Smith 2005 | 271 Pages | ISBN: 0471696803 | PDF | 2 MB There are many lost treasure stories, but on a personal level this is the one that took the longest and cost the most from those involved. These facts make the story a compelling one , Jedwin Smith was a first hand participant and thus had a greater investment than just writing this book. He is obviously awed by the long strange trip by Mel Fisher and family to reclaim the Atocha. Mel Fisher, simply put, is the quentessential everyman who became obsessed with a dream, had just enough success early on to insure his obsession overtook any semblence of normalcy, yet ended up fully realizing his dream albeit at a supremely high price.I liked Jedwin Smith's book quite well. It did hit the main interest points. It did not explore Mel Fisher or his methods as deeply as Gary Kinder's book about treasure hunter Tommy Thompson. That said I'm glad I read it, recommend it, but would like to read further about Mel Fisher. Fashioning Jewish Identity in Medieval Western Christendom By Robert Chazan 2004 | 398 Pages | ISBN: 0521831849 | PDF | 2 MB Five twelfth- and thirteenth-century polemicists from southern France and northern Spain are the first known Jewish polemicists from western Christendom, who identified major Christian challenges, as well as appropriate responses for fellow Jews under ever-increasing religious pressure. This analysis suggests that the Jewish polemicists ultimately attempted to offer their followers a significantly contrasting portrait of Christian and Jewish society: the former as powerful but irrational and morally debased; the latter as weak, but profoundly rational and morally elevated.
