Rethinking the Mediterranean By W. V. Harris 2005 | 435 Pages | ISBN: 0199265453 | PDF | 7 MB In this collection of essays, an international group of renowned scholars attempt to establish the theoretical basis for studying the ancient and medieval history of the Mediterranean Sea and the lands around it. In so doing they range far afield to other Mediterraneans, real and imaginary, as distant as Brazil and Japan. Their work is an essential tool for understanding the Mediterranean, pre-modern and modern alike. It speaks to ancient and medieval historians, to archaeologists, anthropologists and all historians with environmental interests, and not least to classicists. Rethink: The Way You Live by Amanda Talbot 2015 | ISBN: 1452139199, 1742667570 | English | 311 pages | EPUB/PDF (True) | 46 MB/177 MB Rethink: The Way You Live inspires and challenges. Filled with evocative images of homes around the globe, the book illustrates how design game-changers are weaving age-old resourcefulness with new technology, creativity with sustainability to construct a more meaningful existence. We can think small (bringing more nature inside) or big (installing moving walls for multifunctional spaces), but the point is to rethink our design choices today for a more sustainable tomorrow. Beautiful and informative, Rethink reveals how to build a better world from the inside out.
Jeroen Temperman, "Religious Hatred and International Law: The Prohibition of Incitement to Violence or Discrimination " English | ISBN: 1107124174 | 2015 | 438 pages | PDF | 5 MB The UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights obliges state parties to prohibit any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination or violence. This book traces the origins of this provision and proposes an actus reus for this offence. The question of whether hateful incitement is a prohibition per se or also encapsulates a fundamental 'right to be protected against incitement' is extensively debated. Also addressed is the question of how to judge incitement. Is mens rea required to convict someone of advocating hatred, and if so, for what degree of intent? This analysis also includes the paramount question if and to what extent content and/or context factors ought to be decisive. The author extensively engages with comparative domestic law and compares the workings of the UN Human Rights Committee with those of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the European Court of Human Rights. Jana Larson, "Reel Bay: A Cinematic Essay" English | ISBN: 1566895987 | 2021 | EPUB | 224 pages | 5 MB What was Takako Konishi really doing in North Dakota, and why did she end up dead? Did she get lost and freeze to death, as the police concluded, while searching for the fictional treasure buried in a snowbank at the end of the Coen Brothers' film Fargo? Or was it something else that brought her there: unrequited love, ritual suicide, a meteor shower, a far-flung search for purpose? The seed of an obsession took root in struggling film student Jana Larson when she chanced upon a news bulletin about the case. Over the years and across continents, the material Jana gathered in her search for the real Takako outgrew multiple attempts at screenplays and became this remarkable, genre-bending essay that leans into the space between fact and fiction, life and death, author and subject, reality and delusion. Real-Time Rendering By Tomas Akenine-Moller, Eric Haines 2002 | 867 Pages | ISBN: 1568811829 | DJVU | 12 MB I don't know if this book is for you if you are looking for 100% coding examples, but if that's what you're looking for you're probably not interested in Real-Time rendering seriously. As far as the concepts go though it takes the ideas down to a very solid level of understanding. My original use for this book was as a textbook over 2 years a go, but I still pull it out to this day. Real infinite series By Daniel D. Bonar, Michael J. Khoury Jr. 2006 | 271 Pages | ISBN: 0883857456 | DJVU | 4 MB This is an excellent book. The prose is very readable and there are numerous illustrative examples to clarify the main points. Chapter 1 defines infinite series, discusses intuition and infinity, and covers the basic convergence tests. Chapter 2 covers the work of Cauchy and discusses more involved tests of convergence such as Kummer's results, the tests of Raabe and Gauss, and the tests of Abel. Chapter 3 examines the harmonic series. Chapter 4 covers a number of interesting results involving infinite series. Chapter 5 presents 101 problems involving infinite series from the Putnam Mathematical Competition. Answers to all problems are provided. Chapter 6 presents a plethora of puzzles, proofs without words, fallacious proofs, and fallacies, flaws, and flimflam. Answers to the puzzles are given. Two appendices present 101 True or False questions on infinite series with answers and a brief article on harmonic series. References, both books and journals, are also given. A brief but thorough index concludes the book. This book would serve very well as a resource for high school and college calculus teachers. Undergraduate mathematics majors with an interest in infinite series would find it appealing. Finally, readers like myself who majored in mathematics but pursued other careers would enjoy using it to refresh their knowledge of infinite series.(they may need to review a little calculus). The authors have produced a gem of a book and anyone who has a passion for mathematics will enjoy reading this volume. Chapters 1 and 6 are especially readable, informative, and enjoyable. Chapter 6 is just plain fun! Get your hands on a copy of this book as it will provide hours of fascinating reading and problem solving. |
