Proclamation and Celebration Preaching on Christmas, Easter, and Other Festivals
Proclamation and Celebration: Preaching on Christmas, Easter, and Other Festivals By Susan K. Hedahl
2012 | 178 Pages | ISBN: 0800698207 | PDF | 2 MB
Proclamation and Celebration focuses homiletically on the six principal festivals of the church year: Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, and Holy Trinity. Central to the complicated development of lectionaries over the centuries, these festivals have anchored the church year, primarily because they are specifically enunciated in biblical materials. Susan Hedahl argues for the importance of viewing these festivals both as a unit and individually from a doctrinal perspective in light of the dynamic and theological expressions of God's lively relationship with humanity. Exploring the possibilities in the biblical narratives that ground each festival, Hedahl helps the preacher create sermons that find joyous resonance in the liturgical, spiritual, ecumenical, theological, cultural, and educational activities of congregational life. After an initial introduction to the festivals as a group, six chapters address each specific festival, describing the history, biblical texts, doctrines, cultural issues, and possibilities attendant on the festival. Throughout the book, Hedahl uses sermon excerpts by many preachers to illustrate strategies, choosing materials from a wide range of times, styles, and cultures.Review"By providing an engaging, accessible introduction to Christianity's major festivals, Susan Hedahl invites preachers to mine the riches of festival proclamation in ways that celebrate the wonder, mystery, and grace of God. Here we encounter fresh possibilities for transformative preaching that are deeply rooted in Christian tradition. Every preacher who values the lectionary should read this book." --Phil Snider, Senior Minister of Brentwood Chrisitan Church, Springfield, Missouri"How can it be that preachers think they have nothing to add to the glorious good news at Christmas and Easter? Susan Hedahl challenges and encourages us to reflect upon the dramatic, lively doctrines that shape and inform our proclamations at the six major festivals of the church year. A return to doctrinal preaching will teach, will connect us with the cloud of witnesses who have gone before us, and will invite choice and action, not just aesthetic appreciation. Hedahl's approach will add depth and radical faith to festival sermons." --Lucy Hogan, Wesley Theological SeminaryAbout the AuthorSusan K. Hedahl was the Herman G. Stuempfle Chair of Proclamation of the Word at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, where she served since 1992. Ordained in the ELCA, she held degrees from Luther Theological Seminary, St. John's School of Theology in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. Her books include Listening Ministry (Augsburg Fortress, 2001); Who Do You Say That I Am? Preaching in the Twenty-First Century (Lutheran Voices, 2003); Proclamation and Celebration: Preaching on Christmas, Easter, and other Festivals (Fortress Press, 2012); and contributions to both Proclamation and New Proclamation.

Philosophy and Management Studies A Research Overview
Raza Mir, "Philosophy and Management Studies: A Research Overview "
English | ISBN: 1138492361 | 2021 | 116 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Irrespective of whether one thinks of philosophy explicitly, each organizational researcher is a philosopher. A philosophical position is predicated on a variety of approaches relating to ontology, epistemology, methodology, ethics, and political positions. Depending on where one stands with regard to these philosophical building blocks, their orientation may be characterized as positivist, realist, critical-realist, and constructivist, with pragmatist and political considerations weighing in as well. Also, management theories all inhabit the same spectrum of philosophical positions that enrich them and add to their relevance to the world of firms and organizations. This book provides a broad-based commentary on the terrain of philosophy as it pertains to management studies, especially for the relatively unfamiliar organizational theorist.

Out of the Dark, 1914-1918 South Dubliners Who Fell in the Great War
Out of the Dark, 1914-1918: South Dubliners Who Fell in the Great War By Ken Kinsella
2014 | 450 Pages | ISBN: 190892859X | PDF | 17 MB
This timely and compelling book records the experiences of Irishmen from South County Dublin who fought in World War I, while also accounting for the lives of their families who remained at home. Principally a social history, the main body of the book is broken up into seven chapters that each disclose the history of a particular district in South Dublin. These local histories expand upon the background of the families subsequently related, providing a fascinating portrait of the lives that soldiers left behind. The Roll of Honor covers individuals with riveting life stories and tales of anecdotal intrigue. Families of interesting power and wealth are included, such as the great merchant families of Dublin at the time: the Dockrells, Findlaters, Lees, Martins, and McCormicks. The book also provides an illuminating history of Ireland's involvement in World War I generally, and how the war and its fighters have been subsequently recognized within Irish society. Reasons for enlistment, the effect of Gallipoli and the Easter Rising, as well as examples of how ex-British servicemen were treated when they returned home to Ireland following the end of the war - all are accounted for in this fascinating history that highlights the enduring contentions related to Ireland's involvement in 'the Great War.'

On Purposeful Systems An Interdisciplinary Analysis of Individual and Social Behavior as a System of Purposeful Events
On Purposeful Systems: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of Individual and Social Behavior as a System of Purposeful Events By Russell L. Ackoff, Fred E. Emery, Brent D. Ruben (Introduction)
2017 | 306 Pages | ISBN: 0202307980 | PDF | 17 MB
This book provides an innovative foundation for looking at human and social behavior u as a system of purposeful (teleological) events. It uses a systems theoretical approach for the study of these phenomena, and illustrates and extends general systems theory.Part One develops the concepts of traditional mechanism from which, successively, the concepts of "function," "choice," "goal-seeking," and "purposefulness" are derived, leading to a quantitative formulation of "personality." Part Two provides an analysis of aspects of purposeful behavior and personality, and Part Three explores the interaction of purposeful systems. Part Four is concerned with the study of social groups and ideal-seeking behavior. Finally, structural concepts underpinning the theoretical system are redefined in technological terms, thus demonstrating the non-vicious circularity and interdependence of all scientific concepts.

National Perspectives on Russia European Foreign Policy in the Making
National Perspectives on Russia: European Foreign Policy in the Making? By Maxine David (Editor), Jackie Gower (Editor), Hiski Haukkala (Editor)
2013 | 286 Pages | ISBN: 0415538327 | PDF | 6 MB
This book presents a ground-breaking comparative study of the bilateral relations of all 27 EU member states with Russia and an assessment of their impact on the EU s efforts to conduct a coherent and effective policy towards its most important neighbour. While there has been a lot of research on European foreign policy, there has been much less on the role that national foreign policies play in it. Based on a common analytical framework, this book offers a detailed analysis of national perspectives on Russia and how they interact with and affect policymaking at the EU-level. The authors provide deep insights into the relationship between individual states and Russia looking at a range of policy areas: economics, trade, energy, security, culture and education. They are not only interested in examining policy failure but also probing the possibilities of seeing national foreign policies and the bilateralism with third parties that they often entail as a potentially positive resource for the European Union. As Russia is an example of a particularly hard case for EU foreign policy, this book yields important insights concerning the possibilities as well as limits of developing a common EU policy in the future. It will be of interest to students and scholars of European politics, EU Studies, Russian politics, foreign policy studies and international politics.

Matter, Life, and Generation Eighteenth-Century Embryology and the Haller-Wolff Debate
Matter, Life, and Generation: Eighteenth-Century Embryology and the Haller-Wolff Debate By Shirley A. Roe
2002 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 052152525X | PDF | 11 MB
In the eighteenth century, two rival theories of organic generation existed. The 'preformationists' believed that all embryos had been formed by God at the Creation and encased within one another to await their future appointed time of development, while the 'epigenesists' argued that each embryo is newly produced through gradual development from unorganized material. The most important clash between the two schools, the debate between Albrecht von Haller (1708-77) and Caspar Friedrich Wolff (1734-94), crystallized many of the key issues of eighteenth-century biology - the role of mechanism in biological explanation, the relationship of God to His Creation, the question of spontaneous generation, the problems of regeneration, hybrids, and monstrous births. In this book, Professor Roe takes the debate beyond its observational basis and shows that at issue were not only specific embryological problems but also fundamental philosophical questions about the natural world and the way science should explain it.
