The Structure of Conscious Experience
Lee Roy Beach, "The Structure of Conscious Experience"
English | ISBN: 1527537560 | 2019 | 135 pages | PDF | 610 KB
There must exist a point at which the molecular and electro-chemical processes that comprise brain function are transformed into rich, orderly conscious experience which seamlessly blends the present moment, what led up to it, and what will follow it. This is the stuff of our everyday lives, and it raises questions about its organization and how that organization facilitates engagement with the world at large. In short, what is the structure of conscious experience and what is gained by it being structured that way? This book argues that the structure is what is familiarly known as narrative form and that the gain is the ability to communicate about ones experience with oneself and others, as well as to make informed predictions about what will happen in the fundamentally unknowable and potentially dangerous future. In the latter case, because the essence of narrative form is time and causality, structuring events from memory (the past) and from perception (the present) in narrative form causally implies future events (expectations). The potential threat (the bad or the absence of good) of these expected future events can be assessed, and, if required, action can be taken to prevent their occurrence or to diminish their impact. The implications about thinking and action, and about who we are as individuals, are also discussed here.

The Royal Air Force in American Skies The Seven British Flight Schools in the United States during World War II
The Royal Air Force in American Skies: The Seven British Flight Schools in the United States during World War II By Tom Killebrew
2015 | 464 Pages | ISBN: 1574416154 | PDF | 4 MB
By early 1941, Great Britain stood alone against the aerial might of Nazi Germany and was sorely in need of pilots. The Lend-Lease Act allowed for the training of British pilots in the United States and the formation of British Flying Training Schools. These unique schools were owned by American operators, staffed with American civilian instructors, supervised by British Royal Air Force officers, utilized aircraft supplied by the US Army Air Corps, and used the RAF training syllabus.Tom Killebrew provides the first comprehensive history of all seven British Flying Training Schools located in Terrell, Texas; Lancaster, California; Miami, Oklahoma; Mesa, Arizona; Clewiston, Florida; Ponca City, Oklahoma; and Sweetwater, Texas. The British students attended classes and mastered the elements of flight day and night. Some students flushed out, while others were killed during training mishaps and are buried in local cemeteries. Those who finished the course became Royal Air Force pilots. These young British students would also forge a strong and long-lasting bond of friendship with the Americans.

The Revenge of Conscience
The Revenge of Conscience By J. Budziszewski
2010 | 162 Pages | ISBN: 1608997529 | EPUB | 1 MB
A depraved conscience is the most destructive force in political life. Though modern ideologies deny the existence of original sin, it is the source of our great social evils. Blinded to this truth, we suppress our conscience until it is corrupted and, taking its revenge, leads us to cultural calamity. The revenge of conscience is horrifically manifest today in abortion, euthanasia, and suicide, evils brought about by the pollution of good intentions.-- Why do we kill the weak?-- How does our conscience take revenge?-- Why is moral neutrality an illusion?

The Pleasures of God Meditations on God's Delight in Being God
The Pleasures of God: Meditations on God's Delight in Being God By John Piper
2000 | 396 Pages | ISBN: 1576736652 | EPUB | 2 MB
Isn't it true--we really don't know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God!What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it's only when we know what makes God glad that we'll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend "the pleasures of God."Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for-God Himself. In this theological masterpiece-chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century's top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply--and satisfyingly-- from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love-behold and embrace-the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible.

The Oxford Handbook of the Phoenician and Punic Mediterranean
Carolina López-Ruiz, Brian R. Doak, "The Oxford Handbook of the Phoenician and Punic Mediterranean"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0190499346 | 786 pages | EPUB | 7.9 MB
The Phoenicians created the Mediterranean world as we know it-yet they remain a shadowy and poorly understood group. The academic study of the Phoenicians has come to an important crossroads; the field has grown in sheer content, sophistication of analysis, and diversity of interpretation, and we now need a current overview of where the study of these ancient seafarers and craftsman stands and where it is going. Moreover, the field of Phoenician studies is particularly fragmented and scattered. While there is growing interest in all things Phoenician and Punic, the latest advances are mostly published in specialized journals and conference volumes in a plethora of languages. This Handbook is the first of its type to appear in over two decades, and the first ever to appear in English. In these chapters, written by a wide range of prominent and promising scholars from across Europe, North America, Australia, and the Mediterranean world, readers will find summary studies on key historical moments (such as the history of Carthage), areas of culture (organized around language, religion, and material culture), regional studies and areas of contact (spanning from the Levant and the Aegean to Iberia and North Africa), and the reception of the Phoenicians as an idea, entangled with the formation of other cultural identities, both ancient and modern.

The International Society Tradition
The International Society Tradition: From Hugo Grotius to Hedley Bull
English | 2021 | ISBN: 3030770176 | 193 Pages | PDF EPUB | 2 MB
This book traces the development of the international society tradition from its origins in Grotius' On the Law of War and Peace to its crystallization in Bull's The Anarchical Society. It follows the idea of sociability among peoples as it was presented by Grotius and substantiated by Pufendorf, through the skepticism of Voltaire and Kant, to emerge as humanitarian warfare and human rights in the international liberal movement, 'world society' in the 20th century Catholic revival, and common practices and social understandings in the English School in the period of disciplinary development in international relations after the Second World War.
