Engineering Digitised Borders Designing and Managing the Visa Information System
English | 2021 | ISBN: 9789811634024 | 320 pages | True EPUB | 0.32 MB
This book focuses on the Visa Information System (VIS): a large-scale data infrastructure interconnecting a multiplicity of state authorities that enact border security and migration management in the European Union. The VIS is embedded within a setting of pan-European IT systems that filter international mobility, identify threatening elements, hamper the travels of poor, racialized, and alienated subjects, while at the same time facilitate the circulation of those expected to generate financial and other kinds of capital. The book examines the engineering of the VIS by analyzing how it was designed before its deployment in the field of border security, and how it is maintained to ensure continuous and secure operation. It illustrates how engineering processes that render the VIS functional are not just technoscientific, but inherently political, as they (re)configure and maintain the power to govern international mobility by digital means.

Enduring the Whirlwind The German Army and the Russo-German War 1941-1943 (Wolverhampton Military Studies Book 21)
English | 2016 | ISBN: 9781911096870 | 818 pages | True EPUB | 13.29 MB
Despite the best efforts of a number of historians, many aspects of the ferocious struggle between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during the Second World War remain obscure or shrouded in myth. One of the most persistent of these is the notion - largely created by many former members of its own officer corps in the immediate postwar period - that the German Army was a paragon of military professionalism and operational proficiency whose defeat on the Eastern Front was solely attributable to the amateurish meddling of a crazed former Corporal and the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Red Army. A key pillar upon which the argument of German numerical-weakness vis-à-vis the Red Army has been constructed is the assertion that Germany was simply incapable of providing its army with the necessary quantities of men and equipment needed to replace its losses. In consequence, as their losses outstripped the availability of replacements, German field formations became progressively weaker until they were incapable of securing their objectives or, eventually, of holding back the swelling might of the Red Army.

Empire Under the Microscope Parasitology and the British Literary Imagination, 1885-1935
English | 2021 | ISBN: 3030847160 | 303 pages | PDF,EPUB | 8.93 MB
This open access book considers science and empire, and the stories we tell ourselves about them. Using British Nobel laureate Ronald Ross (1857-1932) and his colleagues as access points to a wider professional culture, Empire Under the Microscope explores the cultural history of parasitology and its relationships with the literary and historical imagination between 1885 and 1935. Emilie Taylor-Pirie examines a wealth of archival material including medical lectures, scientific publications, popular biography, and personal and professional correspondence, alongside novels, poems, newspaper articles, and political speeches, to excavate the shared vocabularies of literature and medicine. She demonstrates how forms such as poetry and biography; genres such as imperial romance and detective fiction; and modes such as adventure and the Gothic, together informed how tropical diseases, their parasites, and their vectors, were understood in relation to race, gender, and nation. From Ancient Greece, to King Arthur's Knights, to the detective work of Sherlock Holmes, parasitologists manipulated literary and historical forms of knowledge in their professional self-fashioning to create a modern mythology that has a visible legacy in relationships between science and society today.

Emotional Repatterning Healing Emotional Pain by Rewiring the Brain
English | 2021 | ISBN: 9781789045925 | 216 pages | True EPUB | 0.59 MB
We have access to many tools to help us deal with the rising tide of anxiety and depression: psychotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), medication, meditation, positive affirmations. These methodologies are increasingly popular and have been able to bring some relief to many. But in terms of permanent, deep change, these options are sorely limited because they work solely with the conscious mind rather than with the underlying subconscious beliefs that drive our behavior. Recent research on the brain has revealed that we are only aware of 5% of our brain activity, while the other 95% is subconscious. So, unless we work with both our conscious mind as well as our subconscious mind, we may find some decrease in our pain, but we will continue to struggle. Emotional Repatterning: Healing Emotional Pain by Rewiring the Brain provides insights, stories and examples from Lisa Samet's life and the lives of her patients, as well as practical tools to uncover the subconscious beliefs that are holding us back. It deepens the reader's understanding of their own mind - the patterns of thinking and deep-seated beliefs that keep them feeling stuck and unhappy - and teaches skills to change both their thinking at the conscious level and their beliefs at the subconscious level.
