Mandarin Competence of Chinese-English Bilingual Preschoolers
Hock Huan Goh, "Mandarin Competence of Chinese-English Bilingual Preschoolers: A Corpus-based Analysis of Singaporean Children's Speech"
English | 2016 | pages: 266 | ISBN: 9811022232 | PDF | 2,0 mb
This book provides readers with a detailed sketch of the Mandarin competence of Chinese children in Singapore from different home language backgrounds. Their Mandarin competence is defined in terms of lexical diversity, syntactic complexity and code-switching tendency. The findings presented show that there are statistical differences in lexical diversity and syntactic complexity among the compared groups of children, and these differences in linguistic competence were found to be positively correlated to increased Mandarin exposure at home. They also demonstrate that there are statistical differences in code-switching tendency among the groups of children compared, which were found to be negatively correlated to increased exposure to Mandarin at home. A general relationship between home language exposure and Mandarin competence was established, although this relationship was found to be volatile, especially among children who are more bilingually exposed. This book shares these findings with linguists, language educators, and language policymakers, both local and international.

Managing for Responsibility
Radha R. Sharma, "Managing for Responsibility"
English | ISBN: 1631572881 | 2015 | 160 pages | PDF | 12 MB
The cascading effect of globalization in the form of changing business environment, economic uncertainties and economic meltdown have brought about a plethora of unprecedented challenges before industry and organizations across the globe in recent years. Management education which prepares human capital for the industry jobs is expected to address these challenges along with intensifying competition, advancing technology, increasing workforce diversity and accelerating complexity. But the current management education is largely based on traditional capitalism where the focus is on profits and competitiveness rather than on a balance among profitability, social accountability and sustainability. The corporate scandals, scams and global meltdown and their repercussions on people, organizations, and countries in this interconnected world have created a compelling case for rethinking of management education. Consequently, management education in general and MBA education, in particular, need to adopt a paradigm shift in its knowledge generating (research) system, knowledge dissemination (teaching/training) system and knowledge utilization (learning/consulting/industry projects) system to be responsible and sustainable. Globalization has made the managerial role transnational where managers work, interact or conduct business with people across geographies; therefore, every manager needs to have knowledge of internationally recognized standards/practices to be able to conduct business with responsibility. This textbook Managing for Responsibility provides an alternative paradigm for management education written from an academic as well as practitioners perspective.

Managing Environmentally Sustainable Innovation Insights from the Construction Industry
Managing Environmentally Sustainable Innovation: Insights from the Construction Industry By Bart Bossink
2011 | 206 Pages | ISBN: 041587971X | PDF | 2 MB
A paradigm shift is happening at this moment. Firms and consumers are aware of the fact that they cause environmental pollution, depletion of resources and are responsible for the dangers involved. At the same time awareness is growing that they need to and will develop the appropriate solutions in the time to come. The idea that sustainable, cyclic businesses are more logical than consumption-oriented and waste-dumping ones seems fascinating to a growing number of people. For this change to happen new thinking and behavior is needed. Firms and consumers play a central role in a sustainable business. Companies deliver what consumers buy and vice versa. In a sustainable paradigm, companies are able to develop and produce sustainably. Therefore, companies need new management concepts for sustainable investment, manufacturing, logistics and marketing and for sustainable management. In Managing Environmentally Sustainable Innovation, Bossink evaluates the innovation chain in a process of five consecutive stages, articulates five levels at which people collectively manage the chain, and analyzes the interplay between the two. Acquainting the reader with the complexities of innovation, as well as which complexities are active in the management of environmental sustainability, this book offers guiding principles and a toolbox for the management of environmentally sustainable innovation in construction.

Machine Habitus Toward a Sociology of Algorithms
Massimo Airoldi, "Machine Habitus: Toward a Sociology of Algorithms"
English | ISBN: 1509543287 | 2022 | 200 pages | PDF | 2 MB
We commonly think of society as made of and by humans, but with the proliferation of machine learning and AI technologies, this is clearly no longer the case. Billions of automated systems tacitly contribute to the social construction of reality by drawing algorithmic distinctions between the visible and the invisible, the relevant and the irrelevant, the likely and the unlikely - on and beyond platforms.
