Violence in the Hill Country The Texas Frontier in the Civil War Era
English | 2021 | ISBN: 0262045907 | 269 pages | True PDF | 12.99 MB
In the nineteenth century, Texas's advancing western frontier was the site of one of America's longest conflicts between white settlers and native peoples. The Texas Hill Country functioned as a kind of borderland within the larger borderland of Texas itself, a vast and fluid area where, during the Civil War, the slaveholding South and the nominally free-labor West collided. As in many borderlands, Nicholas Roland argues, the Hill Country was marked by violence, as one set of peoples, states, and systems eventually displaced others.

Universal Well Control
English | 2021 | ISBN: 0323905846 | 638 pages | True PDF | 209.01 MB
Universal Well Controlgives today's drilling and production engineers a modern guide to effectively and responsibly manage rig operations. In a post-Macondo industry, well control continues to require higher drilling costs, a waste of natural resources, and the possibility of a loss of human life when kicks and blowouts occur. The book delivers updated photos, practice examples and methods that are critical to modern well control information, ensuring engineers and personnel stay safe, environmentally responsible and effective. Complete with all phases of well control, the book covers kick detection, kick control, loss of control and blowout containment and killing.

United States of Fear How America Fell Victim to a Mass Delusional Psychosis
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1637583192 , 9781637583203 | 121 pages | True EPUB | 7.13 MB
As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, LA-based psychiatrist Mark McDonald grew increasingly concerned by the negative mental health effects he witnessed among his patients-and Americans nationwide. These negative effects-stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, domestic violence, suicidal ideation-were all directly traceable to the climate of fear being stoked by public health authorities and irresponsibly amplified by national media. These fears in turn drove a hysterical overreaction from government in the form of draconian lockdowns and mask and vaccine mandates of questionable value. But the fear did not abate and quickly took on a life of its own, becoming an unstoppable force in all our lives. At last McDonald began to speak out, explaining that America is actually suffering from two pandemics: a viral one and a psychological one, a "pandemic of fear" that is in many ways more dangerous and damaging than the virus itself. Rooted in the natural anxieties of...

Ultrasound in the Critically Ill A Practical Guide
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030717402 | 327 pages | True PDF EPUB | 124.44 MB
This book provides a practically applicable guide to the use of ultrasound in the care of acutely and critically ill patients. It is laid out in two sections. The first section attempts to take a comprehensive approach to specific systems of examination taking an organ focused approach covering techniques including Focussed Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) scanning and venous sonography. The second section presents a range of specific cases enabling the reader to develop an understanding of how to apply these methodologies effectively into their day-to-day clinical practice.

Ultrafast Lasers and Optics for Experimentalists
English | 2021 | ISBN: 0750336579 | 157 pages | True PDF | 10.86 MB
The use of ultrafast lasers has expanded beyond use by specialist laser physicists and is increasingly commonplace in both physical and life sciences, where the high intensities, broad bandwidths, and short pulse durations make them ideal for investigating a wide range of chemical and physical phenomena. Working with these ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses requires some special care when compared to other laser systems, and this book provides an ideal starting point for the non-specialist to gain the necessary knowledge to start effectively working with ultrafast lasers and optics. The book walks the reader through the relevant parts of ultrashort pulse physics, pulse generation, and pulse characterisation, before discussing how to practically build an optical setup and manipulate these pulses. Many aspects of the practicalities of working with optics and lasers that are often considered assumed knowledge by experienced campaigners are discussed in detail. Aimed specifically at non-specialists, the emphasis is placed on intuitive, qualitative understanding of the concepts. The fundamental aim is that students starting a project or PhD in a laser group, can pick this book up and quickly get up to speed with the fundamentals of ultrafast laser physics that enable effective laboratory working.

Time-Synchronized Control Analysis and Design
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811630887 | 264 pages | True PDF EPUB | 63.08 MB
Previous research on fixed/finite-time sliding-mode control focuses on forcing a system state (vector) to converge within a certain time moment, regardless of how each state element converges. This book introduces a control problem with unique finite/fixed-time stability considerations, namely time-synchronized stability, where at the same time, all the system state elements converge to the origin, and fixed-time-synchronized stability, where the upper bound of the synchronized settling time is invariant with any initial state. Accordingly, sufficient conditions for (fixed-) time-synchronized stability are presented. These stability formulations grant essentially advantageous performance when a control system (with diversified subsystems) is expected to accomplish multiple actions synchronously, e.g., grasping with a robotic hand, multi-agent simultaneous cooperation, etc. Further, the analytical solution of a (fixed) time-synchronized stable system is obtained and discussed. Applications to linear systems, disturbed nonlinear systems, and network systems are provided. In addition, comparisons with traditional fixed/finite-time sliding mode control are suitably detailed to showcase the full power of (fixed-) time-synchronized control.

Theory and Problems for Chemistry Olympiad Challenging Concepts in Chemistry
English | 2020 | ISBN: 981323 8992| 557 pages | True PDF EPUB | 65.38 MB
This study guide for the Chemistry Olympiad contains summarized concepts and examples in all areas of chemistry. The chapters are arranged in a logical manner and establishes connections between concepts. Undergraduate chemistry concepts are explained clearly: every equation in physical chemistry is derived and justified while every organic reaction has its reaction mechanism shown and explained, without assuming that readers have university-level background in the subject. The book also contains original Chemistry Olympiad sample problems that readers may use to test their knowledge. This is a first book of its kind, written by Nan Zhihan, International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) gold medallist and winner of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Prize for achieving the highest score in the experimental exam, and experienced Chemistry Olympiad trainer Dr Zhang Sheng, who has served as head mentor of Singapore IChO team for many years. It builds on the experience of both a participant and trainer to help any aspiring Chemistry Olympiad student understand the challenging concepts in chemistry.

The Wongs of Beloit, Wisconsin
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0299335941 | 215 pages | True PDF | 16.78 MB
Through family interviews, original photographs, and national records, Beatrice Loftus McKenzie traces the many lives of a resilient multigenerational family whose experiences parallel the complicated relationship between America and China in the twentieth century. In the early 1900s, Charles Wong moved from Guangdong Province to the United States and opened the Nan King Lo Restaurant in Beloit, Wisconsin. Soon after, his wife Yee Shee joined him to build the "Chop House" into a local institution and start a family. When the Great Depression hit, the Wongs shared what they had with their neighbors. In 1938, Charles's tragic murder left Yee Shee to raise their seven children-ages one through fourteen-on her own. Rather than return to family property in Hong Kong, she and her children stayed in Beloit, buoyed by the friendships they had forged during the worst parts of the 1930s.
