Appreciating the Art of Television A Philosophical Perspective
Ted Nannicelli, "Appreciating the Art of Television: A Philosophical Perspective "
English | ISBN: 1138840785 | 2016 | 242 pages | PDF | 1438 KB
Contemporary television has been marked by such exceptional programming that it is now common to hear claims that TV has finally become an art. In Appreciating the Art of Television, Nannicelli contends that televisual art is not a recent development, but has in fact existed for a long time. Yet despite the flourishing of two relevant academic subfields―the philosophy of film and television aesthetics―there is little scholarship on television, in general, as an art form. This book aims to provide scholars active in television aesthetics with a critical overview of the relevant philosophical literature, while also giving philosophers of film a particular account of the art of television that will hopefully spur further interest and debate. It offers the first sustained theoretical examination of what is involved in appreciating television as an art and how this bears on the practical business of television scholars, critics, students, and fans―namely the comprehension, interpretation, and evaluation of specific televisual artworks.

Adventures in Thinking Opening the Mind Beyond Practiced Limitations
Emily Maroutian, "Adventures in Thinking: Opening the Mind Beyond Practiced Limitations"
English | ISBN: 1537423282 | 2017 | 210 pages | EPUB | 272 KB
Adventures in Thinking follows Emily Maroutian's previous philosophical books, A Second Opinion and The Process of I. In the same vein, it delves into the process of the human mind and how we create, contribute, and ultimately change our experiences and the world around us through the power of our thinking. The first part of the book explores the personal mind and how it becomes limited through conditioned thinking and unconscious patterns of behavior. Our repeated thoughts lead to repeated behavior, which result in repeated experiences. The personal mind creates individual and global conflicts through its unrelenting need for mental security. It bypasses the truth for comfort, denying the possibility for solutions by denying its involvement in the creation of problems. This mind-frame narrows our experiences only to the familiar and safe, which significantly limits our possibilities in life. The second part of the book proposes the notion that we benefit the most from diversity, curiosity, mindfulness, and keeping an open mind. By sharing our unique perspectives with others and allowing others to contribute to our mental growth, we are then open to solutions we haven't considered. An open and aware mind leads to a deeper connection, an adventurous life, and to solution-oriented thinking. We cannot enact real change until we first change our minds.

Accumulation and Subjectivity Rethinking Marx in Latin America
Karen Benezra, "Accumulation and Subjectivity: Rethinking Marx in Latin America"
English | ISBN: 1438487576 | 2022 | 344 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Since the 1970s, sociocultural analysis in Latin American studies has been marked by a turn away from problems of political economy. Accumulation and Subjectivity challenges this turn while reconceptualizing the relationship between political economy and the life of the subject. The fourteen essays in this volume show that, in order to understand the dynamics governing the extraction of wealth under contemporary capitalism, we also need to consider the collective subjects implied in this operation at an institutional, juridical, moral, and psychic level. More than merely setting the scene for social and political struggle, Accumulation and Subjectivity reveals Latin America to be a cauldron for thought for a critique of political economy and radical political change beyond its borders. Combining reflections on political philosophy, intellectual history, narrative, law, and film from the colonial period to the present, it provides a new conceptual vocabulary rooted in the material specificity of the region and, for this very reason, potentially translatable to other historical contexts. This collection will be of interest to scholars of Marxism, Latin American literary and cultural studies, and the intellectual history of the left.

Helmut Maaßen Aljoscha Berve, "A.N. Whitehead's Thought through a New Prism "
English | ISBN: 1443899607 | 2016 | 278 pages | PDF | 1192 KB
This volume brings together the proceedings of the European Summer School for Process Thought, which took place in Mülheim, Germany, in August 2012. It explores Alfred North Whiteheads thinking in different fields of science, connecting his philosophical writings with physics, religion, education, psychology and aesthetics. The first part of the book is concerned with Whiteheads philosophical methodology, discussing a plethora of subjects, including the interdependence between some of Whiteheads works, the role of logic in his style of argument, concepts of time, the role of symbolism, and the relation between specialized terminology and the colloquial in Whiteheads philosophy. The second part explores applications for the concepts of Whiteheads thinking in a broader context. In scientific fields as diverse as physics, theological and classical Chinese religious thought, concepts of education and psychological theories of embodiment, Whiteheads basic philosophical concepts have been implemented in various different ways. As such, this book holds an interdisciplinary appeal for Whitehead scholars from different scientific backgrounds.
