Extending the Protection of Geographical Indications Case Studies of Agricultural Products in Africa
Extending the Protection of Geographical Indications: Case Studies of Agricultural Products in Africa By Michael Blakeney, Thierry Coulet, Getachew Alemu Mengistie, Marcelin Tonye Mahop
2012 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 0415501024 | PDF | 4 MB
The TRIPS Agreement (for trade-related intellectual property rights) provides for the general protection of geographical indications (GIs) of product origin, including for example the special protection of wines and spirits and for the creation of a multilateral register for wines. The African Group of countries has been in the forefront of countries agitating in the World Trade Organization TRIPS Council for the extension of this special protection and of the multilateral register to industries which are of interest to developing countries, primarily agriculture. The so-called "extension question" is the central feature of the Doha Development Agenda at both the WTO and World Intellectual Property Organization. This book provides some empirical evidence and applied legal and economic reasoning to this debate. It provides both a general review of the key issues and a series of case studies from six Anglophone and four Francophone countries in Africa. These focus on major agricultural commodities such as coffee, cotton, cocoa and tea, as well as more specific and local products such as Argan oil and Oku white honey.

Ethnomusicological Encounters with Music and Musicians Essays in Honor of Robert Garfias
Ethnomusicological Encounters with Music and Musicians: Essays in Honor of Robert Garfias By Timothy Rice
2011 | 350 Pages | ISBN: 140942037X | PDF | 4 MB
Designed as a tribute to ethnomusicologist Robert Garfias, who has conducted field work in more cultures than any other living ethnomusicologist, this volume explores the originating encounter in field work of ethnomusicologists with the musicians and musical traditions they study. The nineteen contributors provide case studies from nearly every corner of the world, including biographies of important musicians from the Philippines, Turkey, Lapland, and Korea; interviews with, and reports of learning from, musicians from Ireland, Bulgaria, Burma, and India; and, analyses of how traditional musicians adapt to the encounter with modernity in Japan, India, China, Turkey, Afghanistan, Morocco, and the United States. The book also provides a window into the history of ethnomusicology, since all the contributors have had a relationship with the University of Washington, home to one of the oldest programs in ethnomusicology in the United States. Inspired by the example of Robert Garfias, they are all indefatigable field researchers and among the leading authorities in the world on their particular musical cultures. The contributions illustrate the core in their approach to the discipline of ethnomusicology at the same time that they deal with a remarkably wide range of perspectives, themes, issues, and theoretical questions. Readers should find this collection of essays a fascinating, indeed surprising, glimpse into an important aspect of the history of ethnomusicology.

Epicurus in Rome Philosophical Perspectives in the Ciceronian Age
Sergio Yona, Gregson Davis, "Epicurus in Rome: Philosophical Perspectives in the Ciceronian Age"
English | ISBN: 1108845053 | 2022 | 248 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The role of Greek thought in the final days of the Roman republic is a topic that has garnered much attention in recent years. This volume of essays, commissioned specially from a distinguished international group of scholars, explores the role and influence of Greek philosophy, specifically Epicureanism, in the late republic. It focuses primarily (although not exclusively) on the works and views of Cicero, premier politician and Roman philosopher of the day, and Lucretius, foremost among the representatives and supporters of Epicureanism at the time. Throughout the volume, the impact of such disparate reception on the part of these leading authors is explored in a way that illuminates the popularity as well as the controversy attached to the followers of Epicurus in Italy, ranging from ethical and political concerns to the understanding of scientific and celestial phenomena.

Entrepreneurial Finance, Innovation and Development A Research Companion
Vi Dung Ngo, "Entrepreneurial Finance, Innovation and Development: A Research Companion "
English | ISBN: 036768103X | 2021 | 368 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Entrepreneurship is now unanimously considered to be a major engine for socio-economic development, mainly because it creates jobs and innovation. Governments around the world pay special attention to removing entrepreneurial barriers in order to support development via different policies, especially entrepreneurial finance. Developing, Emerging and Transition Economies (DETE) significantly differ from industrialized countries because of their specific conditions: institutions, infrastructure facilities and bureaucratic procedures within the administrative system. Thus, firms and their entrepreneurs in and from DETE may behave differently, particularly in terms of their financial strategies. Therefore, contextualizing is critical to better understand the relationship between entrepreneurial finance, innovation and development in DETE.

Jeanne C. Watson, "Emotion-Focused Therapy for Generalized Anxiety"
English | ISBN: 143382678X | 2017 | 266 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)-characterized by near-constant worry that often coincides with intense feelings of shame and despair-is a highly treatment-resistant disorder, with clients often relapsing after making some progress. Master therapists Jeanne C. Watson and Leslie S. Greenberg argue, however, that emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is uniquely capable of targeting the maladaptive emotional schemes that underlie GAD and helping clients maintain lasting, positive change.
