Inside the Undergraduate Teaching Experience The University of Washington's Growth in Faculty Teaching Study
Inside the Undergraduate Teaching Experience: The University of Washington's Growth in Faculty Teaching Study By Catharine Hoffman Beyer, Edward Taylor, Gerald M. Gillmore
2013 | 268 Pages | ISBN: 1438446047 | PDF | 2 MB
Shows what kind of changes college faculty make to their teaching and why they make them. The image of college faculty members as abstracted, white-haired, tweed-jacketed professors, mumbling lectures from notes that were yellowed by twenty years of repeated use is still pervasive. In this view, college faculty care only about their research and have little connection to the students sitting passively in front of them. Inside the Undergraduate Teaching Experience directly challenges this view of today's college faculty and serves as a guide for graduate students and new faculty who seek ways-both personal and pedagogical-to become more effective teachers. Inside the Undergraduate Teaching Experience reports the results of the University of Washington's Growth in Faculty Teaching Study (UW GIFTS), which sought to find out whether or not faculty ever change what they do in the classroom, even when there is little external pressure for them to do so. Key findings in the study were that all courses that faculty members taught were deeply embedded in their academic disciplines, even freshman-level classes; that content and critical thinking as goals for learning could not be separated; that faculty members were making changes to their teaching continuously; that such changes were motivated by the faculty member's intentional assessment of the learning needs of her particular classes; and that most changes were aimed at helping students meet faculty members' goals for learning. "This book captures the voices of faculty engaged in the classroom in a fashion that I have not seen before. In the midst of a cacophony of works denouncing the professoriate as insensitive to problems of student learning (generally with little evidence), this study offers a glimpse into the real attitudes of a large group of instructors." - David Pace, coeditor of Decoding the Disciplines: Helping Students Learn Disciplinary Ways of Thinking

Inguinal Hernia Pathophysiology and Genesis of the Disease
Inguinal Hernia: Pathophysiology and Genesis of the Disease
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030952231 | 97 Pages | PDF True | 9 MB
This book aims at filling a gap in relation to the pathophysiology of the inguinal region and the genesis of groin protrusions. While inguinal hernia is a widespread disease and hernia repair accounts for the most frequently performed surgical procedure, these two aspects have been unsatisfactorily investigated, so that to date there is no shared hypothesis on how visceral protrusion through inguinal barrier occur. Exact knowledge on the pathogenesis is fundamental for adequately managing a disease, otherwise all curative approaches would not be evidence-based, but merely empirically identified and with uncertain outcomes carried out. Moreover, in absence of pathogenetic certainty, formulating guidelines simply results in an unjustified methodology harbinger of polemics and controversies. Previous studies concerning the pathogenesis of inguinal protrusions were mainly focused on the detection of biochemical changes, mostly related to collagen chains, metalloproteinase and similar elements. Nevertheless, despite decades of researches, a sure relationship between these ultrastructural modifications and visceral protrusion has not been proven. On the contrary, over the years very few investigations dealt with evidencing eventual modifications in the tissue structures of the herniated groin. An extensive research finalized to ascertain in patients and in cadavers structural changes of the tissue elements composing the groin was therefore carried out by the author and his researchers team. The findings of these studies resulted to be very useful for definitely evidencing the etiology of inguinal hernia disease. Overall, the proposed book scrutinizes and widens all emerging aspects related to pathogenesis, histology, physiology, surgical and functional anatomy of the inguinal area affected by hernia protrusion. It intends to be a reference guide to surgeons willing to better understand the structural modifications occurring in patients affected by this disease with the aim of improving treatment results.

Infections and Inequalities The Modern Plagues, Updated with a New Preface By Paul Farmer
Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues, Updated with a New Preface By Paul Farmer
2001 | 419 Pages | ISBN: 0520229134 | EPUB | 2 MB
Paul Farmer has battled AIDS in rural Haiti and deadly strains of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the slums of Peru. A physician-anthropologist with more than fifteen years in the field, Farmer writes from the front lines of the war against these modern plagues and shows why, even more than those of history, they target the poor. This "peculiarly modern inequality" that permeates AIDS, TB, malaria, and typhoid in the modern world, and that feeds emerging (or re-emerging) infectious diseases such as Ebola and cholera, is laid bare in Farmer's harrowing stories of sickness and suffering.Challenging the accepted methodologies of epidemiology and international health, he points out that most current explanatory strategies, from "cost-effectiveness" to patient "noncompliance," inevitably lead to blaming the victims. In reality, larger forces, global as well as local, determine why some people are sick and others are shielded from risk. Yet this moving account is far from a hopeless inventory of insoluble problems. Farmer writes of what can be done in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, by physicians determined to treat those in need. Infections and Inequalities weds meticulous scholarship with a passion for solutions-remedies for the plagues of the poor and the social maladies that have sustained them.

Inconsistent Mathematics
Inconsistent Mathematics By Chris Mortensen
1995 | 168 Pages | ISBN: 9048144809 | PDF | 3 MB
The theory of inconsistency has been growing steadily over the last two decades. One focus has been philosophical issues arising from the paradoxes of set theory and semantics. A second focus has been the study of paraconsistent or inconsistency-tolerant logics. A third focus has been the application of paraconsistent logics to problems in artificial intelligence. This book focuses on a fourth aspect: the construction of mathematical theories in which contradictions occur, and the investigation of their properties. The inconsistent approach provides a distinctive perspective on the various number systems, order differential and integral calculus, discontinuous changes, inconsistent systems of linear equations, projective geometry, topology and category theory. The final chapter outlines several known results concerning paradoxes in the foundations of set theory and semantics. The book begins with an informal chapter which summarises the main results nontechnically, and draws philosophical implications from them. This volume will be of interest to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and professionals in the areas of logic, philosophy, mathematics and theoretical computer science.

Inconsistency in Science
Inconsistency in Science By Joke Meheus (ed.)
2002 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 9048160235 | PDF | 25 MB
For centuries, inconsistencies were seen as a hindrance to good reasoning, and their role in the sciences was ignored. In recent years, however, logicians as well as philosophers and historians have showed a growing interest in the matter. Central to this change were the advent of paraconsistent logics, the shift in attention from finished theories to construction processes, and the recognition that most scientific theories were at some point either internally inconsistent or incompatible with other accepted findings. The new interest gave rise to important questions. How is `logical anarchy' avoided? Is it ever rational to accept an inconsistent theory? In what sense, if any, can inconsistent theories be considered as true? The present collection of papers is the first to deal with this kind of questions. It contains case studies as well as philosophical analyses, and presents an excellent overview of the different approaches in the domain.
