Path to Buddhahood Teachings on Gampopa's Jewel Ornament of Liberation
Path to Buddhahood: Teachings on Gampopa's Jewel Ornament of Liberation By Ringu Tulku, Matthieu Ricard
2003 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 1590300122 | PDF | 6 MB
The Jewel Ornament of Liberation is regarded by all Tibetan Buddhist schools as one of the most inspiring and comprehensive works of the tradition. Written by Gampopa (born 1079 CE), the main spiritual son of the great hermit Milarepa, this important text lays out the stages of the Buddhist path and explains how an enlightened attitude is strengthened by practicing the six perfections of generosity, discipline, patience, exertion, meditation, and knowledge. For the first time, this sometimes difficult text is made accessible to Western readers in a clear and engaging commentary. Tibetan teacher Ringu Tulku explores this classic work of Buddhist practice and philosophy with the playful and fresh style that has made him so popular among students of Buddhism. Using folksy examples and anecdotes, he brings this text to life, discussing topics such as: * seeing through the illusions that cause us to suffer * advice on acting with kindness, generosity, and patience * instructions on how to put others first * guidance for attaining peace and lasting compassion

Panhellenism and the Barbarian in Archaic and Classical Greece
Panhellenism and the Barbarian in Archaic and Classical Greece by Lynette Mitchell
English | November 22, 2007 | ISBN: 1905125143 | True PDF | 262 pages | 6 MB
This is the first book in English to provide a systematic treatment of Panhellenism. The author argues that in archaic and classical Greece Panhellenism was a body of narratives that expressed, defined and limited the community of the Hellenes and gave it political substance. Yet Panhellenic narratives also responded to other needs of the community, in particular serving to locate the Hellenes in time and space. Thus one of the chief Panhellenic narratives, the war against the barbarian, provided the conceptual framework in which Alexander the Great could imagine his Asian campaign.

According to Greek mythology, after the Trojan War, Neoptolemus, son of Achilles, went to the region of Epirus, and imposed himself as ruler, with the help of members of the Trojan court. The Chaonians are said to derive from Chaon, brother or friend of Helenus, son of Priam, king of Troy. When Helenus became the ruler of the country, he gave Chaon a part of it to rule, which was called Chaonia. The Chaonians, according to the geographer Strabo, were the most famous of the Epirotic tribes. They had their capital in the city of Fenice, but their country was a collection of villages and formed more of a tribal state than a hierarchical society in the style of classical Greece, which, according to Aristophanes, the Caonian system of government was chaotic. Their rulers were elected annually and in the 4th century BC their leaders used the title of Prostates ('protector' in Greek). They lived in constant combat with the Illyrian tribes to the north.
