Dallas leads the nation in these exonerations. TESTED: How Twelve Wrongly Imprisoned Men Held Onto Hope dramatically reveals how these men kept their hope, their faith, and their sanity. As authors Peyton Budd and Dorothy Budd interviewed these men, they discovered the secrets of what sustained them behind bars. These innocent men illuminate both the failures of the justice system and the resilience of the human spirit. Their surprising stories teach us that no matter how we are tested in our lives, it is never wrong to have hope.
Terrible Victory: First Canadian Army and the Scheldt Estuary Campaign, September 13 - November 6, 1944 By Mark Zuehlke 2007 | 576 Pages | ISBN: 1553652274 | EPUB | 4 MB On September 4, 1944, Antwerp, Europe's largest port, fell to the Second British Army and it seemed the war would soon be won. But Antwerp was of little value unless the West Scheldt Estuary linking it to the North Sea was also in Allied hands. In his greatest blunder of the war, Field Marshal Montgomery turned his back on the port, leaving the First Canadian Army to fight its way up the long coastal flank. By the time the Canadians and others serving with them reached the area, it had been transformed into a fortress manned by troops ordered to fight to the death. Crushing the Nazi defenders required all of the Canadians' courage, endurance and skill. The battle that raged until November was Canada's bloodiest of World War ii, costing more than 6,000 casualties. Ernst Badian - Studies in Greek and Roman History Basil Blackwell Press | 1964 | ISBN: N/A | English | 296 pages | PDF | 9.35 MB Great book, difficult to get, for the specialist of Greek and Roman history. Each chapter is unrelated to the others. Badian is simply taking issues that he wants to clarify and works on them, with no regards to actual chronology. Greek themes (Alexander the Great) and Roman themes (Sulla) are intermixed. Therefore you pick and choose which chapter and when to read it. I read it for the chapters on Greek history: Antiochus and Alexander the Great, and other Macedonian issues. Badian is one of these scholars that stresses the fact that the ancient Greeks did not accept the Macedonians as their kin, and he is correct on that in most respects, politically at least though not necessarily culturally (the religion, mythology and language tied the southern Greeks to the Macedonians as much as politics and different economic systems separated them). A great little book by a great Graeco-latinist. The police concluded it was the work of militant suffragettes after discovering footprints of ladies' shoes...and an empty champagne bottle and cake. |
