From the Lab to the Classroom and Back Again Perspectives on Translation and Interpreting Training (New Trends in Translation
From the Lab to the Classroom and Back Again: Perspectives on Translation and Interpreting Training (New Trends in Translation Studies) By Celia Martín de León (editor), Víctor González-Ruiz (editor)
2016 | 369 Pages | ISBN: 3034319851 | PDF | 6 MB
This collection of essays brings to the fore some of the most pressing concerns in the training of translators and interpreters. It does so by acknowledging the primary role of research in both the development and the results of that training. The eleven chapters of the book, authored by a range of established international scholars, touch on the interlocking nature of didactics and research and address advances in cognitive processes, quality assessment and socio-professional issues with regard to their significance for translation and interpreting training. With this volume, the editors aim to illustrate some of the most recent insights into the interplay between scientific progress and the educational stages of prospective translators and interpreters.

From Protest to Surveillance - The Political Rationality of Mobile Media Modalities of Neoliberalism
From Protest to Surveillance - The Political Rationality of Mobile Media: Modalities of Neoliberalism By Oliver Leistert
2013 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 3631643136 | PDF | 2 MB
The book won the Surveillance Studies Network Book Prize 2014. The book argues that the mobile as a political technology in a broad sense facilitates the global export of the Western concept of individuality. This empowers those subjectivities and mindsets which can adapt to the communication regime of ubiquitous connectivity. Exemplifying two focal points - the use in protests and the surveillance of mobile phones - the book traces political trajectories of mobile phones, just as it provides deep insights into the actual practice of mobile phone use by activists and their surveillance. 50 semi-structured interviews with activists from countries including Brazil, India, Pakistan and Mexico offer a detailed and profound discussion of mobile phone success and failures in different struggles for justice. By situating mobile phone mass dissemination within a political rationality of neoliberalism and its political technology of governmentality, it shows how sovereign rule updates to catch up with the subject's empowerment through mobile phones. The limits of mobile phone impact on activism are examined, and how it compromises its users when new sovereign means such as data retention or silent SMS surveillance are invoked.

From Digital to Analog «Agrippa» and Other Hybrids in the Beginnings of Digital Culture (New Literacies and Digital Epistemolo
From Digital to Analog: «Agrippa» and Other Hybrids in the Beginnings of Digital Culture (New Literacies and Digital Epistemologies) By Augustín Berti
2015 | 287 Pages | ISBN: 1433125056 | PDF | 5 MB
From Digital to Analog delves into the origins of digitization and its effects on contemporary culture. The book challenges the «common sense» assertion that digitization is just another step in the evolution of the culture of the editorial, film and recorded music industries and their enforcement of copyright laws. Digital technologies in contemporary culture have paradoxically undermined and, at the same time, strengthened such practices, provoking an unprecedented quarrel over the possession of, and access to, cultural products. Agustín Berti uses the release of Agrippa (A Book of the Dead) in 1992 to study this paradox. The importance of Agrippa for digital culture studies is proven through the discussion of the frequently understated importance of the materiality of digital culture. The book develops a critique of digital technology and its alleged neutrality and transparency. Ultimately, it illustrates how Agrippa anticipated a number of contemporary phenomena such as piracy, leaks, remixes, memes, and more, forcing us to rethink the concept of digital content itself and thus the way in which culture is produced, received and preserved today. From Digital to Analog is ideal reading for a graduate student readership, especially Master candidates in the fields of Literature, Arts, Digital Humanities, Digital Culture and New Media Studies.
