Daniel Halliday, "Inheritance and the Right to Bequeath: Legal and Philosophical Perspectives " English | ISBN: 0367760290 | 2022 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB In every Western democracy today, inheritances have a very profound influence on people's lives. This motivates renewed scholarship on inheritance law by philosophy and the legal sciences. The present volume aims to contribute to some ongoing areas of inquiry while also filling some gaps in research. Johannes Dellert, "Information-theoretic causal inference of lexical flow" English | ISBN: 3961101442 | 2019 | 384 pages | PDF | 3 MB This volume seeks to infer large phylogenetic networks from phonetically encoded lexical data and contribute in this way to the historical study of language varieties. The technical step that enables progress in this case is the use of causal inference algorithms. Sample sets of words from language varieties are preprocessed into automatically inferred cognate sets, and then modeled as information-theoretic variables based on an intuitive measure of cognate overlap. Causal inference is then applied to these variables in order to determine the existence and direction of influence among the varieties. The directed arcs in the resulting graph structures can be interpreted as reflecting the existence and directionality of lexical flow, a unified model which subsumes inheritance and borrowing as the two main ways of transmission that shape the basic lexicon of languages. A flow-based separation criterion and domain-specific directionality detection criteria are developed to make existing causal inference algorithms more robust against imperfect cognacy data, giving rise to two new algorithms. The Phylogenetic Lexical Flow Inference (PLFI) algorithm requires lexical features of proto-languages to be reconstructed in advance, but yields fully general phylogenetic networks, whereas the more complex Contact Lexical Flow Inference (CLFI) algorithm treats proto-languages as hidden common causes, and only returns hypotheses of historical contact situations between attested languages. The algorithms are evaluated both against a large lexical database of Northern Eurasia spanning many language families, and against simulated data generated by a new model of language contact that builds on the opening and closing of directional contact channels as primary evolutionary events. The algorithms are found to infer the existence of contacts very reliably, whereas the inference of directionality remains difficult. This currently limits the new algorithms to a role as exploratory tools fo In-House Counsel 101: Surviving and Thriving as In-House Counsel by Brendan Sullivan English | August 8, 2022 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0B94LNYL5 | 110 pages | EPUB | 0.22 Mb There are about 1 million lawyers in America and 40,000 new each year. Many law firm lawyers dream about an 'in-house counsel' job. Many lawyers and non-lawyers wonder what exactly an in-house counsel does. Many in-house counsel have similar experiences, many struggle in the role, and many want to have easier days and deals. Until now, the in-house counsel experience - the true full picture has not been shared in one spot. This book is the 101 of in-house counsel. The book is a short and sweet guide to the in-house counsel role. It's for those thinking about going in-house, those in-house who want to improve, and those at law firms that work a lot with non-legal departments. It gets into pros and cons of the role, how to get the role, tips and tricks in deals, managing outside counsel, relationships with non-legal and department dynamics, building legal teams, creating legal cultures and more. I love the in-house counsel role. A very particular person excels as in-house counsel- they need to be dynamic, personable, and pragmatic.
Impact: Design With All Senses: Proceedings of the Design Modelling Symposium, Berlin 2019 by Christoph Gengnagel English | EPUB | 2020 | 802 Pages | ISBN : 3030298280 | 229.75 MB This book reflects and expands on the current trend in the building industry to understand, simulate and ultimately design buildings by taking into consideration the interlinked elements and forces that act on them. Shifting away from the traditional focus, which was exclusively on building tasks, this approach presents new challenges in all areas of the industry, from material and structural to the urban scale. The book presents contributions including research papers and case studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the field as well as perspectives from related disciplines, such as computer science.
