Equilibrium Thermodynamics
Equilibrium Thermodynamics by Mário J. Oliveira
English | PDF | 2013 | 391 Pages | ISBN : 3642430821 | 4.5 MB
This textbook provides an exposition of equilibrium thermodynamics and its applications to several areas of physics with particular attention to phase transitions and critical phenomena. The applications include several areas of condensed matter physics and include also a chapter on thermochemistry. Phase transitions and critical phenomena are treated according to the modern development of the field, based on the ideas of universality and on the Widom scaling theory. For each topic, a mean-field or Landau theory is presented to describe qualitatively the phase transitions.

Entanglements of Two A Series of Duets
Entanglements of Two: A Series of Duets By Karen Christopher (editor), Mary Paterson (editor)
2021 | 168 Pages | ISBN: 1789385040 | PDF | 35 MB
An investigation of the complex relationship of form and practice through the lens of the smallest multiple units of collaboration: the pair. Drawing out the particularities of collaborative work, Entanglements of Two: A Series of Duets considers the duo as a microcosm of humankind. Focusing on a ten-year period in the work of collaborative performance maker Karen Christopher, the book explores the practical, philosophical, and aesthetic implications of working in pairs and offers wider reflections on the duet as a concept in artistic and social life. The twenty-five pieces in the collection-from an international group of collaborators, artists, and performance scholars, alongside writing from related disciplines, including linguistics, physics, poetry, and theology-offer critical reflections on artistic collaboration and entanglement and contemplate their significance on an interpersonal and global level. A foreword by writer and artist Season Butler rounds out this essential volume.

Enigma of the Emperors Sacred Subservience in Japanese History
Enigma of the Emperors: Sacred Subservience in Japanese History By Ben-Ami Shillony
2003 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 1901903346 | PDF | 3 MB
This important new and original study on the institution of the Japanese emperors, from their mythological beginnings to the present day, focuses on the enigma of the institution itself, namely, the extraordinary continuity of the Japanese dynasty, which is unknown anywhere else in the world, yet which is now at risk on account of more recent laws of succession. The prisms through which this remarkable achievement is examined are the notions of divinity, gender and subservience. The volume is divided into nine sections: Strange Survival; The Feminine Beginnings of the Japanese Monarchy; Empresses and Consorts; Subservience as Power; Rising Fortunes in an Era of Peace; Meiji: the National Father Figure; The Elusive Divinity of the Modern Emperors; Return to Sacred Subservience; Continuity in Danger. Based on earlier research first published in Japanese (Haha Naru Tenno), Enigma of the Emperors adds significantly to the existing corpus of work on this subject, addressing many traditional preconceptions and misconceptions along the way. Accordingly, it will undoubtedly be welcomed within scholarly circles, as well as being of particular interest to a wider readership, not least because of its relevance in the context of the major contemporary issues surrounding the future of the dynasty in the twenty-first century.

Enactive Psychiatry
Sanneke de Haan, "Enactive Psychiatry"
English | ISBN: 1009246038 | 2022 | 305 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Psychiatry is enormously complex. One of its main difficulties is to articulate the relationship between the wide assortment of factors that may cause or contribute to psychiatric disorders. Such factors range from traumatic experiences to dysfunctional neurotransmitters, existential worries, economic deprivation, social exclusion and genetic bad luck. The relevant factors and how they interact can differ not only between diagnoses but also between individuals with the same diagnosis. How should we understand and navigate such complexity? Enactive Psychiatry presents an integrative account of the many phenomena at play in the development and persistence of psychiatric disorders by drawing on insights from enactivism, a theory of embodied cognition. From the enactive perspective on the mind and its relation to both the body and the world, we can achieve a new understanding of the nature of psychiatric disorders and the causality involved in their development and treatment, thereby resolving psychiatry's integration problem.
