The Origins of Greek Temple Architecture English | 2022 | ISBN: 1108499473 | 351 Pages | PDF | 16 MB In this book, Alessandro Pierattini offers a comprehensive study of the evolution of pre-archaic Greek temple architecture from the eleventh to mid-seventh century BCE. Demystifying the formative stages of Greek architecture, he traces how temples were transformed from unassuming shrines made of perishable materials into large stone and terracotta monuments. Grounded in archaeological evidence, the volume analyzes the design, function, construction, and aesthetic of the Greek temple. While the book's primary focus is architectural, it also draws on non-architectural material culture, ancient cult practice, and social history, which also defined the context that fostered the Greek temple's initial development. In reconstituting this early history, Pierattini also draws attention to new developments as well as legacies from previous eras. Ultimately, he reveals why the temple's pre-Archaic development is not only of interest in itself, but also a key to the origins of the Greek monumental architecture of the Archaic period. Jonathan Foltz, "The Novel after Film: Modernism and the Decline of Autonomy" English | ISBN: 0190676493 | 2017 | 304 pages | EPUB, PDF | 2 MB + 23 MB According to prevailing media histories, film long ago ought to have rendered the novel obsolete. The irony of this story is that the "death of the novel" at the hands of film has for a long time now been a pervasive trope of the novel's continued reinvention. The Novel After Film offers a substantial reassessment of this paradoxical new condition of novelistic practice in which writers have re-imagined the novel in the shadow of film. In the cinema, a generation of modernist writers found a medium whose bad form was also laced with the glamor of the popular, and whose unfamiliar visual language seemed to harbor a future for innovative writing after modernism. How did the cinema-with its crude continuities, crowded theaters, stock Descriptions, and ghostly images-seem to flout conventional ideas of narrative form? What new literacies of experience and representation did film seem to promise?

The Nineteenth-Century Child and Consumer Culture By Dennis Denisoff (editor) 2008 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0754661563 | PDF | 26 MB During the rise of consumer culture in the nineteenth century, children and childhood were called on to fulfill a range of important roles. In addition to being consumers themselves, the young functioned as both 'goods' to be used and consumed by adults and as proof that middle-class materialist ventures were assisting in the formation of a more ethical society. Children also provided necessary labor and raw material for industry. This diverse collection addresses the roles assigned to children in the context of nineteenth-century consumer culture, at the same time that it remains steadfast in recognizing that the young did not simply exist within adult-articulated cultural contexts but were agents in their formation. Topics include toys and middle-class childhood; boyhood and toy theater; child performers on the Victorian stage; gender, sexuality and consumerism; imperialism in adventure fiction; the idealization of childhood as a form of adult entertainment and self-flattery; the commercialization of orphans; and the economics behind formulations of child poverty. Together, the essays demonstrate the rising investment both children and adults made in commodities as sources of identity and human worth. David J. Hartshorne, "The New Science of Fixing Things: Powerful Insights About Root Cause Analysis That Will Transform Product and Process Performance" English | 2020 | ASIN: B0863R7784 | PDF | pages: 126 | 2.4 mb In order to solve any problem, a reasonably deep understanding of how and why things happen is required. This knowledge, however arrived at, provides the capacity to take action. Making the link between what we see happening and such knowledge is a process called diagnosis. But how can we go about diagnosing performance and reliability of engineering systems when the required knowledge is not immediately to hand? This book shows that truly excellent performance is achievable, and it is not that difficult. These insight are powerful, and yet seem to be largely unknown, almost secret. This is a management overview of what effective diagnosis should entail, and what is possible, highlighting both the core principles, and the very small number of strategies that are both effective and efficient. Their application is illustrated with case-studies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony: The History and Legacy of the Settlement of Colonial New England by Charles River Editors English | January 19, 2016 | ISBN: 1523479825 | 57 pages | EPUB | 0.90 Mb *Includes pictures *Profiles important figures like John Winthrop, Roger Williams, and others *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents The first successful American colony in North America was settled in 1607 at Jamestown, Virginia. Though the Virginian colonists had difficulty in the beginning, by the late 1620s the Chesapeake area was thriving, having become a haven for those seeking economic opportunity in the new world. Pressures in England were growing as King Charles I was on the throne. Though Charles I himself was an Anglican, many suspected him of Catholic sympathies, a suspicion not alleviated by Charles I marriage to a French Catholic princess. Many Protestants had a growing desire to practice their faith and conduct their lives away from the mother country, and sought refuge in a destination called New England. The land chosen by this group, who "could pay their own way across the Atlantic" in contrast to the poorer settlers of the Chesapeake region was "colder, less abundant, but far healthier" than Virginia. Alan Taylor sees this decision as one in "classic Puritan fashion", citing one settler's view: "If men desire to have a people degenerate speedily, and to corrupt their minds and bodies too...let them seek a rich soil, that beings in much with little labor; but if they desire that Piety and Godliness should prosper...let them choose a Country such as [New England] which yields sufficiency with hard labor and industry." The Puritans who came to America were, therefore, primed for hard work, discipline and the independent life, unlike their English counterparts who "preferred Anglicanism and the traditional culture characterized by church ales, Sunday diversions, ceremonial services, inclusive churches, and deference to the monarch." Ultimately, the men of the New England Company decided that the time had come to remove themselves from England, and to pursue their lives in the Americas. The Dorchester Company was founded by a group of investors with an interest in settlement in the New World. This settlement would be a for-profit venture, but it would have as its two main causes the spreading of the Gospel to the Indian population and the stop of the spread of Roman Catholicism in the American colonies. John White, the company's leader, also wanted to compete with the separatists who had begun the Plymouth colony in 1620. Cape Ann, a promontory very near to Cape Cod was established by the Dorchester Company as an early settlement. The fishing was excellent, but Cape Ann proved unable to provide the farm goods needed to sustain the Puritan settlers who came to the New World. The Dorchester Company was dissolved, but investors seeking to salvage its aims formed the New England Company or Massachusetts Bay Company and secured a charter just before King Charles I dissolved the Parliament in 1629. The Massachusetts Bay Colony: The History and Legacy of the Settlement of Colonial New England profiles the history of the colony, as well as its most famous leaders and individuals. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about colonial New England like never before, in no time at all.
