The main problem facing critics of Sophokles' Elektra has always been understanding the presentation of the vengeance and the nature of justice it represents. This volume addresses the ethical issues of this play through an analysis of the language and argumentation which the characters use to explain and justify their behaviour.

Doggerland and Cantre'r Gwaelod The History and Legends Associated with the Sunken Lands of the British Isles
Doggerland and Cantre'r Gwaelod: The History and Legends Associated with the Sunken Lands of the British Isles by Charles River Editors
English | November 21, 2022 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0BN4M5ZRY | 105 pages | EPUB | 0.71 Mb
In the distant past, the continents were not so separate. The southern portion of the globe was at one time occupied by a "supercontinent" dubbed "Gondwana" or "Gondwanaland" that existed 600 million years ago. The mass included present-day South America, Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, India, Australia, and Antarctica. The term "supercontinent" was coined by Austrian geologist Eduard Suess, an expert on the Alps who helped lay the basis for the study of paleography and tectonics. The latter was to replace the "drifting continent" theory with "the study of the architecture of the earth's outer rocky shell." In the late Paleozoic Age between 254 to 544 million years in the past, a global supercontinent commonly known as Pangea included the entire masses of Gondwana, Eurasia, and North America as the two northern continents collided.

Diverse Narratives of Legal Objectivity An Interdisciplinary Perspective
Diverse Narratives of Legal Objectivity: An Interdisciplinary Perspective By Vito Breda (editor), Lidia Rodak (editor)
2015 | 252 Pages | ISBN: 3631653433 | PDF | 2 MB
This volume presents a collection of essays on objectivity in legal discourse. Has law a distinctive type of objectivity? Is there one specific type of legal objectivity or many, depending on the observatory language utilized? Is objectivity fit for law? The analyses in the various contributions show that the Cartesian paradigm of objectivity is not relevant to the current legal discourse, and new forms of legal objectivity are revealed instead. Each essay, in its distinctive way, analyses the strong commitment of law to objectivity, shedding light on the controversies that surround it.

Discretion, Community, and Correctional Ethics
John Kleinig, Margaret Leland Smith, Heather Barr, "Discretion, Community, and Correctional Ethics"
English | 2001 | ISBN: 0742501841, 0742501833 | PDF | pages: 274 | 16.5 mb
Some two million Americans are in jail or in prison. Except for the occasional exposé, what happens to them is hidden from the rest of us. Is it possible to develop and instill a professional ethic for prison personnel that, in partnership with formal regulatory constraints, will mediate relations among officers, staff, and inmates, or are the failures of imprisonment as an ethically-constrained institution so deeply etched into its structure that no professional ethic is possible? The contributors to this volume struggle with this central question and its broader and narrower ramifications. Some argue that despite the problems facing the practice of incarceration as punishment, a professional ethic for prison officers and staff can be constructed and implemented. Others, however, despair of imprisonment and even punishment, and reach instead for alternative ways of healing the personal and communal breaches constituted by crime. The result is a provocative contribution to practical and professional ethics.

English | ISBN: 1725257696 | 2020 | 254 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
An earnest young boy who loves nature grows up the son of a fundamentalist pastor. He goes to college, trains as a biologist, and becomes a successful university professor. In the process he finds some of the religious beliefs that carried him through childhood and adolescence indefensible in the face of evidence from biology and geology-and even from Scripture itself. What's he to do? This is the journey of a boy-turned-scientist who finds a path away from "the idols of fundamentalism" and toward a universe rich with process, intrigue, and mystery. Along the way, he discovers a faith consistent with physical reality, one open to beauty, kindness, and hope.
