The Political Economy of Human Rights in Armenia Authoritarianism and Democracy in a Former Soviet Republic
Simon Payaslian, "The Political Economy of Human Rights in Armenia: Authoritarianism and Democracy in a Former Soviet Republic"
English | 2011 | pages: 430 | ISBN: 1848858116 | PDF | 3,0 mb
Since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia has experienced a reversal from democratization to a Soviet-style authoritarian regime and has been accused of repressive approaches to human rights. Here, Simon Payaslian juxtaposes a masterful survey of the history of the Armenian people from the nineteenth century through the first republic (1918-21), and Sovietization to the present, with the evolution of international human rights standards, and argues that a statist and authoritarian political culture has impeded political liberalization and institutionalization of human rights principles. Highlighting the clash between sovereignty on one side and human rights and democracy on the other, this comprehensive and in-depth analysis is essential for all those interested in human rights, democratization, political repression and the former Soviet republics.

The New Foundations of Labour Law
The New Foundations of Labour Law By Kerstin Ahlberg (editor), Niklas Bruun (editor)
2017 | 276 Pages | ISBN: 3631718500 | PDF | 3 MB
This book explores the challenges of globalisation and digitalisation to labour law and social security under three headings. The first, «The changing foundations of labour law» focuses on the law itself. Here the authors discuss how a changing political setting influences the very foundations of contemporary labour law. The contributions in the second section, «Precarious work - the new normative model?», deal with the challenges that various new business models put to regulating working life and social welfare. The contributions in the final section, «New forms of labour mobility», treat the difficulties related to the protection of workers who move over borders between countries and continents. The book is a contribution to the ongoing debate on the future of labour law.

The Mirror of the Self Sexuality, Self-Knowledge, and the Gaze in the Early Roman Empire
The Mirror of the Self: Sexuality, Self-Knowledge, and the Gaze in the Early Roman Empire By Shadi Bartsch
2006 | 312 Pages | ISBN: 0226038351 | PDF | 2 MB
People in the ancient world thought of vision as both an ethical tool and a tactile sense, akin to touch. Gazing upon someone-or oneself-was treated as a path to philosophical self-knowledge, but the question of tactility introduced an erotic element as well. In The Mirror of the Self, Shadi Bartsch asserts that theselinks among vision, sexuality, and self-knowledge are key to the classical understanding of the self.Weaving together literary theory, philosophy, and social history, Bartsch traces this complex notion of self from Plato's Greece to Seneca's Rome. She starts by showing how ancient authors envisioned the mirror as both a tool for ethical self-improvement and, paradoxically, a sign of erotic self-indulgence. Her reading of the Phaedrus, for example, demonstrates that the mirroring gaze in Plato, because of its sexual possibilities, could not be adopted by Roman philosophers and their students. Bartsch goes on to examine the Roman treatment of the ethical and sexual gaze, and she traces how self-knowledge, the philosopher's body, and the performance of virtue all played a role in shaping the Roman understanding of the nature of selfhood. Culminating in a profoundly original reading of Medea, The Mirror of the Self illustrates how Seneca, in his Stoic quest for self-knowledge, embodies the Roman view, marking a new point in human thought about self-perception. Bartsch leads readers on a journey that unveils divided selves, moral hypocrisy, and lustful Stoics-and offers fresh insights about seminal works. At once sexy and philosophical, The Mirror of the Self will be required reading for classicists, philosophers, and anthropologists alike.
