Asymmetric Dual Core Waveguides Dynamics of Self-Similar Waves
Asymmetric Dual Core Waveguides: Dynamics of Self-Similar Waves
English | 2023 | ISBN: 981197117X | 181 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 26 MB
This book highlights the dynamical behavior of self-similar waves in asymmetric dual-core waveguides. The proposed dual-core waveguide consists of two closely spaced adjoining fibers in which one fiber is active and the other is passive. Due to the linear coupling between them, the dynamics of the wave propagating through the passive core can be controlled by manipulating the dynamics of the wave propagating in the active core. The optimal pulse compression or amplification of these waves as the length of the fiber tends to infinity is presented. The exact Mobius transform self-similar solutions that propagate through these waveguides self-similarly are subject to simple scaling rules. The book includes experiments conducted to corroborate the analytical predictions.

Artistic Creation and Ethical Criticism
Ted Nannicelli, "Artistic Creation and Ethical Criticism "
English | ISBN: 0197507247 | 2020 | 288 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Artistic Creation and Ethical Criticism, a study in philosophical aesthetics, investigates an idea that underpins the ethical criticism of art but that is rarely acknowledged and poorly understood - namely, that the ethical criticism of art involves judgments not only of the attitudes a work endorses or solicits, but of what artists do to create the work. The book pioneers an innovative production-oriented approach to the study of the ethical criticism of art - one that will provide a detailed philosophical account of the intersection of ethics and artistic creation as well as conceptual tools that can guide future philosophizing and criticism.

Artificial Intelligence, Social Harms and Human Rights
Artificial Intelligence, Social Harms and Human Rights
English | 2023 | ISBN: 303119148X | 358 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 2.2 MB
This book critically explores how and to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) can infringe human rights and/or lead to socially harmful consequences and how to avoid these. The European Union has outlined how it will use big data, machine learning, and AI to tackle a number of inherently social problems, including poverty, climate change, social inequality and criminality. The contributors of this book argue that the developments in AI must take place in an appropriate legal and ethical framework and they make recommendations to ensure that harm and human rights violations are avoided. The book is split into two parts: the first addresses human rights violations and harms that may occur in relation to AI in different domains (e.g. border control, surveillance, facial recognition) and the second part offers recommendations to address these issues. It draws on interdisciplinary research and speaks to policy-makers and criminologists, sociologists, scholars in STS studies, security studies scholars and legal scholars.

Andy Clark and His Critics
Matteo Colombo, Elizabeth Irvine, Mog Stapleton, "Andy Clark and His Critics"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0190662816 | PDF | pages: 329 | 133.7 mb
Andy Clark is a leading philosopher of cognitive science, whose work has had an extraordinary impact throughout philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and robotics. His monographs have led the way for new research programs in the philosophy of mind and cognition: Microcognition (1989) and Associative Engines (1993) introduced the philosophical community to connectionist research and the novel issues it raised; Being There (1997) showed the relevance of embodiment, dynamical systems theory, and minimal computation frameworks for the study of the mind; Natural Born Cyborgs (OUP 2003) presented an accessible development of embodied and embedded approaches to understanding human nature and cognition; Supersizing the Mind (OUP 2008) developed this yet further along with the famous "Extended Mind" hypothesis; and Surfing Uncertainty (OUP 2017) presents a framework for uniting perception, action, and the embodied mind.
