English | May 21st, 2011 | ISBN: 0691149887, 0691135495 | 248 pages | True EPUB | 2.82 MB
The quest for extraterrestrial life doesn't happen only in science fiction. This book describes the startling discoveries being made in the very real science of astrobiology, an intriguing new field that blends astronomy, biology, and geology to explore the possibility of life on other planets. Jeffrey Bennett takes readers beyond UFOs to discuss some of the tantalizing questions astrobiologists grapple with every day: What is life and how does it begin? What makes a planet or moon habitable? Is there life on Mars or elsewhere in the solar system? How can life be recognized on distant worlds? Is it likely to be microbial, more biologically complex-or even intelligent? What would such a discovery mean for life here on Earth?

Autoimmune Diseases and Their Environmental Triggers
Elaine A. Moore, "Autoimmune Diseases and Their Environmental Triggers "
English | ISBN: 0786413220 | 2002 | 239 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Autoimmune Disease (AD) refers to any of a number of disorders caused by an immune system defect that allows the body to attack its own tissues. Some say 20 percent of the population is susceptible to Autoimmune Disease. According to current theory, individuals who develop AD do so because they are exposed to certain environmental triggers. This work is a comprehensive resource for patients with autoimmune disease. The primary focus is on the specific environmental factors, including heavy metals, hormones, organic solvents, medications, and infectious agents, that lead to autoimmune disease and that make the symptoms worse in genetically susceptible individuals. Sections of this work describe the immune system, the natural courses of disease for the various system-wide and organ-specific autoimmune disorders, and genetic factors and lifestyle influences associated with AD. Diagnostic concerns, conventional and alternative treatment options for AD, current research paths, and laboratory tests are also covered.

Authorizing Superhero Comics On the Evolution of a Popular Serial Genre
Daniel Stein, "Authorizing Superhero Comics: On the Evolution of a Popular Serial Genre "
English | ISBN: 0814258026 | 2021 | 334 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Authorizing Superhero Comics examines the comic book superhero as a lasting phenomenon of US popular serial storytelling. Moving beyond linear- or creator-centered models of genre development, Daniel Stein identifies authorization conflicts that have driven the genre's evolution from the late 1930s to the present. These conflicts include paratextually mediated exchanges between officially authorized comic book producers and, alternatively, authorized fans that trouble the distinction between production and its reception; storyworld-building processes that subsume producers and fans into a collective rooted in a common style; parodies that ensure the genre's longevity by deflating criticism through self-reflexive humor; and collecting and archiving as forms of memory management that align the genre's past with the demands of the present. Taking seriously the serial agencies of the superhero comic book as a material artifact with a particular mediality, the study analyzes letter columns, editorial commentary, fanzines, encyclopedias, and other forms of comic book communication as critical frameworks for understanding the evolution of the genre-assessing rarely covered archival sources alongside some of the most treasured figures from the superhero's multi-decade history, from Batman and Spider-Man to Wonder Woman and Captain America.
