Free Women in the Pampas A Novel about Victoria Ocampo
María Rosa Lojo, "Free Women in the Pampas: A Novel about Victoria Ocampo"
English | ISBN: 0228008611 | 2021 | 280 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
A feminist pioneer, writer, and patron of the arts and literature in Buenos Aires, Victoria Ocampo (1890-1979) was a larger-than-life personality of legendary vitality. A key protagonist in Argentina's rise to world-class status in the arts and sciences, Ocampo leveraged her wealth and social status to found Sur (1931-92), the internationally influential journal of literature, culture, and ideas.Ocampo personally invited many intellectual and artistic celebrities to visit Buenos Aires. Most were men. Some, endowed with egos as outsized as their reputations, tripped and fell into sentimental imbroglios with the strong-willed and beautiful Ocampo. In Free Women in the Pampas the ups and downs of her passionate friendships, debates, and misunderstandings with poet Rabindranath Tagore, philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, and the writers Pierre Drieu de la Rochelle, Hermann von Keyserling, and Waldo Frank are witnessed by the fictional Carmen Brey, a Galician-Spanish immigrant whose story is skilfully interwoven with that of Ocampo. Carmen's sympathetic but incisive gaze puts her friend Victoria into perspective against a larger vision of Argentina. Carmen's adventures lead her to social-justice writer María Rosa Oliver, the wilder side of the 1920s literary avant-garde (and the now-canonical authors Roberto Arlt, Jorge Luis Borges, and Leopoldo Marechal), the Mapuche people of the pampa, and a ten-year-old Evita Ibarguren, later famous as Eva Perón.Against this broad, inclusive backdrop, the novel vividly depicts Victoria Ocampo's struggle with the strictures of class and gender to find her own voice and vocation as a public intellectual.

Frantz Fanon A Portrait
Nadia Benabid, "Frantz Fanon: A Portrait"
English | 2006 | ISBN: 080147308X, 0801440386 | PDF | pages: 276 | 17.9 mb
"Fanon was consummately incapable of telling the story of himself. He lived in the immediacy of the moment, with an intensity that embodied everything he evoked. Fanon's discourse pertained to a present tense that was unburdened by its narrative past. The little we knew about his personal life had been gleaned from passing allusions, brief glimpses that vanished as quickly as they appeared.... Fanon had a profound talent for life; he was a man who wanted to be the subject and actor of his own life, and it was for this reason that he was so engaging and disarming―so alive."―from the Introduction

Francophone Africa at fifty
Tony Chafer, Alexander Keese, "Francophone Africa at fifty"
English | 2018 | pages: 257 | ISBN: 1526122855, 0719089301 | PDF | 1,8 mb
France's presence on the African continent has often been presented as 'cooperation' and part of French cultural policy by policy-makers in Paris - and quite as often been denounced as 'the longest scandal of the republic' by French academics and African intellectuals. Between the last years of French colonialism and France's sustained interventions in former African colonies such as Chad or Côte d'Ivoire during the 2000s, the legacy of French colonialism has shaped the historical trajectory of more than a dozen countries and societies in Africa. The complexities of this story are now, for the first time, addressed in a comprehensive series of essays, based on new research by a group of specialists in French colonial history. The book addresses the needs of both academic specialists and those of students of history and neighbouring disciplines looking for structural analysis of key themes in France's and Africa's shared history.

Forties Film Funnymen The Decade's Great Comedians at Work in the Shadow of War
Forties Film Funnymen: The Decade's Great Comedians at Work in the Shadow of War By Wes D. Gehring
2010 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0786442573 | PDF | 15 MB
The twelve classic comedy films examined within these pages are distinguished by an equal number of defining comic performances. Ranging from The Great Dictator (1940) to A Southern Yankee (1948), each film focuses on the most central theme of "clown comedy": Resilience, the encouragement or hope that one can survive the most daunting of life's dilemmas-even during the war-torn 1940s. And each film can be regarded as a microcosm of the antiheroic world of its central clown (or clowns). Among the performers represented are Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Abbott and Costello, Jack Benny, Eddie Bracken, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, the Marx Brothers, Harold Lloyd and Red Skelton. This lavishly illustrated work includes an introduction by noted film critic and historian Anthony Slide.

Formula One Famous Failures
Matthew Teaters, "Formula One Famous Failures"
English | ISBN: 1425185282 | 2009 | 96 pages | EPUB | 133 KB
Created in 1950, the Formula One World Championship is the pinnacle of auto racing. The most popular form of motor sports on Earth, some of its marquee teams are known throughout the world, such as Ferrari, McLaren, and Lotus. Formula One's glamorous outlook and incredible marketing power make one believe that it is a fantasy world of expensive machinery and super hero drivers, a dazzling array of lines and colors. But if one looks closer into the history of the world Championship, one will notice another side to Formula one, a side of failure. It is obvious that not every car can be a Lotus 49 or a Williams FW 14B. And not every engine can have the impact of a Ford Cosworth DFV or a Honda turbo, in fact very few are, but some stand out as some of Formula One's most famous failures. What are the worst? That is certainly open to debate. Each year, for every winner, there are numerous disappointments, but this novel hopes to illustrate the fights and famines of the Grand Prix World.

Food, Sex and Salmonella Why Our Food Is Making Us Sick
Food, Sex and Salmonella: Why Our Food Is Making Us Sick By David Waltner-Toews
2008 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 1553652711 | EPUB | 2 MB
What sex is to interpersonal relationships, eating is to the human-environment relationship: a consummation of humans' connection to the living biosphere. But while sticking one's tongue into a new and exciting environment may be an act as old as the planet, it can also lead to some nasty surprises. In this lively look at foodborne illnesses, David Waltner-Toews discusses food-related problems caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites, including death by puffer fish, rollicking tales of tapeworms, neurological problems brought on by ciguatera poison, and that old standby, botulism. He also examines the chemicals and antibiotics that have entered the food supply and the havoc they can wreak. And to help readers stop problems before they start, he offers common-sense solutions to confronting the complicated issue of foodborne disease. His witty approach makes a deadly serious subject accessible to all readers, while never minimizing the risk.
